As many of you may know, January has its name derived from Janus, the Roman god, keeper of gates and doorways. Janus looked both forward and backward, so it s rather fitting that in the first month of the year we look in those directions. The past year has witnessed many accomplishments: our numerous donations of quilts, placemats, food, chemo hats, Youth Gift Bags, quilted Christmas stockings, and more, to hundreds of Mid-Island recipients. We ve celebrated our 30 th anniversary and been enriched at retreat and classes. Most recently, we ve had a most wonderful Christmas Pot Luck evening. A huge thank you is due to all who worked on the Christmas Party Committee. It was a great celebration filled with fun, music, laughter, prizes, excellent food, and best of all, friendship. Special thanks to Lorie Rogers, our MC, to Liz Simonson for leading us in singing and, of course, to Graham Gates for his keyboard talents! To all who attended, your presence made the evening memorable.gracias! Looking forward to January 21 st, our first 2015 NQG meeting will feature our own Cindy Scraba with My Quilts Can Talk and our regular business meeting. On the 31 st, we will be busily enjoying our annual Quilt Bee at Oliver Woods. As always, this proves to be a funfilled, productive day for the benefit of the Haven Society. I m looking forward to seeing our creations and to the excitement that exudes from this event. As stated earlier, we find ourselves and our guild on the thresh-hold of another year. As many have, did you wonder what might lie ahead in 2015? The beginning of January is, for me, a bit like looking at a wrapped gift. What surprises do the months ahead contain? What joys, what new adventures, what learning experiences will the months disclose? Often, many of us approach the New Year with a few resolutions. Have you made any quilting resolutions? Will you resolve to finish one or two UFO s? Will you decide to try a new technique or participate in a class? Will you do some serious stash busting? Will you tempt a friend to become a quilter by inviting her to one of our meetings? What might you wish to do? How might you achieve this goal? It might be fun for each one of us to take a piece of paper, write at least one objective that we will seriously undertake for the coming year, put our resolution into an envelope and see how well we did a year from now. Sometimes, it seems that when we put things in writing, our intent changes to become a commitment. So, what will you commit to do in your quilting journey this year? What gift will you discover in this box of twelve months? Whatever you intend, I wish you all well in the days and months ahead. Happy Quilting! Norma Steven, President
Volume 31 Issue 5 January, 2015 Christmas Pot Luck Images Program Report January will be a busy month for the Program Committee as this is when we start the planning for the Guild year. We are definitely in need of some new members. Several of us have been part of the committee for 4 or more years and feel it is time to step down. New ideas and new directions are always a good thing. We know there are many creative people in the guild who would be a great asset to our team. We meet for 2 hours (1:00-3:00) on the 1st Friday of the month. January would be a great time to join us as it would give you a few months to job shadow and also be part of the planning for next year. Contact our chair: Janet Knecht by at quiltyjan@gmail.com or by phone If you do not feel you are able to commit to the committee on a regular basis you may want to consider being an Angel at the monthly meeting or at a workshop. For the meetings it would be to help the presenter set up and take down their items and also be a Vanna. At workshops there is the morning set up of electrical cords and power bars as well as the irons and ironing boards. Angels help the instructor as needed (perhaps distributing outlines, etc.) Keeping the tea and coffee fresh and hot is a very important task. At the end of the day there is the take down to be done and the kitchen to be left neat and tidy. There always a lead angel in attendance who is part of our program committee. If interested contact Barbara Waine at barwai07@telus.net We do encourage people to check their calendars before the next meeting as spaces in the upcoming workshops are filling up. Our February workshop entitled Arched Attic Windows is being led by Joy Hegglund of Duncan. Joy is a very experienced quilter and has taught several classes at Creative Quilting in Duncan. In 2007 her quilt Spring Rhapsody was published in Ricky Tims Rhapsody Quilts book. In 2012 two of her works Nidelven and Spring Rhapsody were exhibited at the International Quilt Association Oh Canada exhibit. Samples of the mini demo projects should be on display at our next meeting. There will not, however, be a sign up session in January. We have found that signing up in February works just as well. Our very own Cindy Scraba will be our January presenter. Her program is entitled: My Quilts Can Talk! A Presentation from Cinderella s Suitcase! Sounds interesting see you there. Pat Ryan 2 of 7
Raffles We certainly had a wonderful Christmas pot luck meeting!! The winners for our December meeting were: Mystery Fabric: Ann Crawford, Leslie Millward Show & Share: Janet Knecht, Kathy Bush, Laura Beswick, Ann Crawford, Blanche Gates Raffles: Vivian Scott, Barb Peters, B. Abma, Rony Gerritsen, Cheryl Tellier, Judy Peterson, Sherry Drebnicki, Cindy Scraba, Bobbi Moss, Lija Bane, Leanne Sturgron Door Prize: Philippa Zapf, Val Ursulak We would like to thank the generous donations from: Vicki Zoltay Don't forget to bring your change to buy lots of Raffle and Mystery Fabric tickets in our next meeting in January. Let's have lots of fun! Hugs, Maggie PLACEMAT COMMITTEE We had 51 lovely placemats turned in at the November Guild meeting which gave us a total of 263 placemats. Christmas is the time of giving so most of the placemats were donated in December to the following organizations: Nanaimo Meals on Wheels received 50 placemats. Ladysmith Meals on Wheels received 10 placemats. 48 placemats were given out at the Mid Island Abilities Christmas Luncheon. Laura Beswick, Barb Kerfoot, and Bonnie Dormuth were in attendance and distributed the placemats. From all accounts, they were gratefully received. Also, 127 placemats were donated to the Salvation Army. The representative from the Salvation army called me to thank the Guild with high praise for the quality of the quilting displayed in each placemat. She thought they were all absolutely beautiful. So, a total of 235 placemats were donated for This leaves us 28 placemats toward Once again I am asking all members to save those scraps and continue producing those gorgeous placemats. They are all really appreciated. Next year we will need even more as we will have to hold some back to use in the tea room at the 2016 Quilt Show. The committee will continue to have batting and some backing available at the Guild meetings and the placemats should measure 12" X 18". We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and your New Years resolutions included making more placemats! Your Placemat Committee Team 3 of 7
(Heather, Norma and Laura) Quilt Bees News Now that Christmas is over for another year, it's time to get into high gear for the up coming Quilt Bee. The teams are full and hopefully ready to go to work on January 31st. The doors will be open at 8:45 am but not before as we need time to set up. If you need a reminder of what you should bring then please pick up an info sheet at the Quilt Bee table. Lunch will be potluck so dig out your recipes! Anyone working on a quilt for Haven House at home has a few more weeks to complete it. We are still looking for a photographer for the day. If you have never attended a Quilt Bee and would like to see what it is all about, feel free to drop in for a short time at Oliver Woods on that Saturday. Carole Phinney Marlene Jones Nancy Lutes Donation Quilt Report During November and December we received a great number of quilts from members. It was very heartening to see the wonderful donations so many people made. Early in December we contacted the organizations to let them know Ad sponsored by the Scrappy Bags of NQG! Bring your donations to the meetings. 4 of 7
we were bringing them some quilts. Cathy Herrington, Lil Charron, and I sorted all the donations, and counted them out for the recipients. We gave out 92 quilts to 11 different organizations! We were exceptionally lucky to have Bonnie Dormuth deliver these quilts, and I believe she enjoyed seeing the happy responses from all the group leaders. If you are interested in the list of donations it will be in the January meeting minutes. Again, many thanks to all those who made quilts for us. I know during January we will all be busy making quilts for the Quilt Bee to be given to Haven House. Then I hope we can make some more for our Donation Quilts. We particularly need more little quilts some 36 x 40, 40 x 40, and Preemie quilts. Here is a reminder of the quilt sizes we can use: Preemie 36 x 36 with no batting Baby or crib 36 x 36 to 45 x 45 Wheelchair 36 x 40 with ties 20 long Lap 45 x 60 Twin 63 x 87 These are all approximate sizes, and will help you decide what you can do with your scraps! Remember that we have backing material, batting, and labels available at the Donation Quilt table at all meetings. Submitted by Liz Simonson. Library Report How the time does fly! Just a reminder that all materials are due back at the January meeting. All materials checked out at the January meeting will be due back in March. There will be NO library at the February meeting due to the mini demos. IF the January meeting is cancelled due to weather conditions, all books will be then due back at the March meeting. Reminder for the afternoon meetings: Due to the volume of materials being returned in the afternoons, please wait until coffee break to browse & check out materials. Executive members who work during the coffee breaks can come in early to choose books.
