We hope everyone is working on finishing their entries if they are not already finished. They are due February the 12th or 14th. Time is getting close and the excitement is rising. Don t forget to tell everyone you know about coming to the show. We have a lot of great quilts entered and we want as many people to see them as possible. We sure enjoyed our program by Sylvia Schafer in January. I think we all learned more about what modern quilts are. We have a few modern quilts entered in this year s show but I expect after this great program, we will have more for the next show. Also if your interest was piqued, remember there is a modern quilt group. Contact Sylvia if you are interested. Our upcoming February program given by Mary Walker has been canceled due to a conflict in Ms. Walker s scheduling. Instead we will be having a trunk show of antique quilts presented by our own member Fay Rawls from her extensive collection of antique quilts Also, don t forget our upcoming workshop presented by Chris Eichner on April 18th. Remember this will be on a Saturday so it is an opportunity for those of you who work to be able to attend a workshop. Be sure to sign up at our next meeting or contact Linda Zacker. 9 A report on the Handwork Bee ~Jodie Seila Jodie Seila is leading the Handwork Bee at the Lyndon House. This bee is for anyone who would like to do handwork with a group of guild friends. Jodie is teaching hand quilting for anyone who is interested. This is the information she sent to the members who had signed up for this bee. If anyone else would like to join us you are welcome to come. If you have never quilted, you will need a hoop about 12 round, a number 10 Betweens quilting needle, I prefer the John James Gold and Glide needles, 1 yard of good quality muslin, and some batting that is 80 % cotton and 20 % polyester. I have used Harriet Hargrove batting and it works very well. I think you can still buy it at JoAnn fabrics. If not, get a good quality 80/20 batting. 100% cotton batting is too difficult to hand quilt. Draw a straight line on your fabric with a blue water soluble pen. Then draw another design with curves. I recommend a feather design that you can find in any hand quilting book. I will teach you how to go around a curve and pass over to areas you have not quilted. When you feel comfortable with this process, you can quilt anything you want. I recommend a thimble that has raised top and deep grooves so you can use it without slipping off your finger while you quilt. The Clover thimble is a good thimble to try. It is easy to use with people who have arthritis. It is very comfortable on a knuckle that is deformed. I recommend that you wear your thimble for several days before you come to class so you do not feel awkward when I am teaching you. It is really not possible to hand quilt without using a thimble. So don t show up without one. If you do not know or understand how to draw on your fabric, just come and I will have a stencil you can use. It is impossible to quilt without some kind of frame. The people who know how to hand quilt and want to use your method that you are comfortable with do not need to change your method unless you want to try what I teach. At this bee, we will use our own quilts, hoops, and quilting methods. We will not be at a large quilting frame. If you have any questions about what I am going to teach, please ask. If you are not interested in hand quilting and you want to do other handwork instead, join us. A report on the Unfinished Objects (UFO) Bee ~ Ginny Lynch This past Friday, January 16, Barbara Redman, Chandler Pike, Lola Gazda and Ginny Lynch spent several hours working on various projects, i. e. binding on show quilt, sleeve for show quilt, sun bonnet sue quilt for a church raffle, and cutting fabric for a project. We all solved all the problems of the world and enjoyed just being together! All are welcome to join us. Next 3rd Friday is February 21; 9:30 AM till?? 9
