We welcome visitors and hope they will become new members! AUGUST REFRESHMENTS BROUGHT TO YOU BY Suzanne Reeves, Lola Gazda, Ginny Lynch, Mary Colley. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT... Through a Child s Eyes We ve just finished MomMom Camp at our house a time when our grandchildren ages 4+ come to Athens for a week of fun and adventure. From picking blueberries, to an Atlanta field trip, or seeing the double barrel canon and the tree that owns itself, the time is carefully planned to entertain and educate. But the best part of each day is when the children create their own fun and pursue their own adventures - MomMom and Popsy keeping a keen ear for the inevitable sibling fight or an occasional broken family treasure. When grandchildren visit, my sewing room door is open 24-hours a day. Sharp scissors and my Bernina are hands-off, but otherwise the room becomes theirs. The favorite thing in this room has always been my favric stash. Cloth scraps, strips and fat quarters are strewn all over the table and floor, looking much like wrapping paper on Christmas morning. With blunt nosed scissors, ribbon and tape, creations are constructed for dolls, shoebox houses or stuffed animals and proudly presented to me for my approval. It s gorgeous! I proclaim. I love it! How beautiful. You have quite the eye for color, I tell them. Then I look closer. What I see is gorgeous. The color combination or pattern is something I would have never considered before, and it is indeed beautiful. For me, a quilt idea begins forming from what my grandchildren have constructed with their tiny hands, inexperienced eyes and simple joy of creating-without-rules. (And without saying it, I hope against hope there is enough favric left so that I might duplicate their idea!) Thanks to my campers, I think maybe once-in-a-while I should put aside the color choices I typically make to look at a quilt s possibilities through the eyes of a young girl or a little boy. I invite you to join me. Spend time soon with a child you love or with the child that lives deep within each of us to see colors and quilt patterns anew with child-like abandon. 3 INTERVIEW WITH STEPHANIE CHAPMAN Stephanie has spent the past 5 weeks (plus 2 more) in Europe studying design/patterns/etc. with an eye towards designing a block or a quilt from approximately every city she s visited, and recording it all in a blog (quiltingonthefly.blogspot.com). Currently, of course, she s in the material gathering stage but is planning on continuing the blog to record the actual quilt making process, turning all of the designs into a reality. Q: Stephanie, where did you grow up? A: Atlanta Q: What brought you to Athens? A: School at UGA Q: How did you learn about the Cotton Patch Guild? A: I went looking for quilt shops and guilds, because I didn't want to be one of those students that never left campus, and never met anyone that actually lived in Athens Q: What is your first memory of sewing? A: I can't say I really have any first memory of sewing, because for as long as I remember I can recall sitting on the floor in my mom's sewing room and playing, or helping her pick out fabrics, or sewing with her machine sitting on her lap Q: Do you have a first quilt memory? A: My first definite quilt memories are of the first class I ever took, when I was 8 at the old Village Quilt shop in downtown Stone Mountain, though even then I remember already having experience working a sewing machine. I do recall having these books with activity pages to learn how to use a sewing machine, where you had to stitch a path on the paper, forwards and backwards and around corners and curves and whatnot. Q: What movie would you choose to watch or music you like to listen to while you quilt? A: I like to turn on the radio and just listen to whatever comes on, though that can get irritating when I've been sewing much longer than the stations playlist and start to hear the same songs over and over! Q: If you were given a generous gift card to a quilt shop, how would you spend it? A: Considering I've spent the past 6 or so weeks designing patterns for quilts that I hope to eventually turn into a book, I'd probably spend it on fabric for those Q: What inspires your creativity? A: I love looking around and finding inspiration everywhere, which is what I've been doing (and blogging about) all summer. There are patterns to be had absolutely everywhere, it s just a matter of noticing the potential around you Q: How many projects do you have started? A: Too many! I think currently I have 5 or 6 started, but I have a goal of having designs for over a dozen more by the end of the summer. Q: Do you plan to finish all of them? A: Of course! Q: You seem to produce more quilts than most members. We want to know, when do you sleep? How do you find enough hours in a day to sew/quilt? A: I find that in fact when you do sleep, there are somehow more hours in the day to do whatever it is that you want to do, because the things you have to do get done more easily and less stressfully when you're well rested. That said, I tend to go on quilting binges, where I don't get a chance to sit down and sew for a couple weeks, but then get a free day and spend 10 hours doing nothing but working on projects.

4 COMMUNITY SERVICE: Ginny Lynch CHARITY BEE continues to be busy BEEing for our community. The Raffle Quilt is now ready for quilting. Nancy Bruce is taking care of hiring a long arm quilter to do the job. Jeanne Lindberg brought the finished quilt to our Charity Bee on Wednesday after completing the appliqué on the corners of the borders and it is breath-takingly beautiful! Can t wait for you all to see the finished product. Mary Ann Cox demonstrated how to make placemats on Wednesday and each person got to make one placemat with Mary Ann s direction. We all had fun and LEARNED -- thanks to Mary Ann s super job of demonstrating and directing. Some of us got more done than others but all of us took our placemats home to complete. Can t wait to see the finished products maybe next Wednesday we ll have 10 placemats finished? We had many members check out quilt kits to sew and/or quilts to bind at the July meeting. Please check out a kit at the August meeting if you haven t already done so. It s fun and easy to do and it will give you a chance to win a $35 gift certificate at the December potluck. So check out a kit and get some charity work done before the crunch of the quilt show and the holidays and thus get a chance to win $$ to buy more fabric! The funds for $35 gift certificates have been donated from sales of items made by the Charity Bee members at Sandy Creek festival and other festivals, NOT from guild monies. Following is a breakdown on getting your name in the drawing for making quilt kits for charity: # times your name is entered in the drawing: 1 (yellow ribbon) for completing a kit top OR a binding 3 (red ribbon) for completing AND quilting a kit quilt 5 (blue ribbon) donating a completed quilt from member's own stash Next drawing to be at the December dinner meeting! October 2 is the annual Athens Northeast Georgia Folk Festival at Sandy Creek Park and community service has a booth at the festival. Please volunteer to sit at the booth and demonstrate our quilting skills. It is a fun event and helping out gets you free admittance to the festival.!!! MARK YOUR CALENDAR!!! 5 TRAVEL FINDS: Quilt Shop Search and Reconnaissance Members are invited to share quilting related FINDS they may happen upon during their travels this year and bring the information back to share with the Guild. Please the details about the shop to the newsletter editor. Include name, city, and a couple of sentences about the shop. You will see it in the next newsletter. Virtual finds are accepted as well! Mary Colley, Sherry Paul, Chris Reynolds, Pat Dwinell, Jodie Seila, Madeline Hawley went to the National Quilt Show in Knoxville. Along the way we stopped at several quilt shops. We had a great time looking and shopping. The exhibits at the show were fantastic and we enjoyed visiting, learning and shopping from the vendors. We ran into some others from our guild like Marilyn Osterkamp, Barbie Bugg, Mary Ellen Taylor, Patti Carter. The quilts were fantastic and so was the weather. Some of the highlights of our trip included having our picture made with Eleanor Burns, meeting the YoYo Club of Paducah (these ladies were lots of fun), a machine quilting demonstration with Cheryl Barnes. Just too much fun! We came home with lots of ideas, goodies and sore feet. Deb's Cats N Quilts A Stitch In Time Quilters Quarters Franklin, N.C. Franklin, N.C. 6 Minutes -- Caryn Curry Cotton Patch Meeting 07/13/10 The July meeting of the Cotton Patch Quilt Guild was held Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at the Lyndon Arts Center. Social time began at 6:30pm with Coke and root beer floats as special treats! After social time, the meeting was called to order by President Ruhanna Neal. The minutes from the June meeting and the June Treasurer s report were both approved as submitted in the newsletter. Ruhanna introduced the board for the upcoming year. Members that will serve as committee and sub-committee chairs are: Jodie Seila Beekeeper, Ginny Lynch Community Service, Marilyn Osterkamp - Georgia Quilt Council Liaison, Anita Heady Internet, Lola Gazda Library, Vicki Bauer Newsletter, Terri Jarrett Publicity, Deb Henderson & Frances Arnold 2011 Quilt Show, Sherry Paul Fundraising, Cleo Ward Social, Mary Colley & Fay Rawls Workshops, Marty Tanner Hughes Challenges, Phyllis Rother Door Prizes, and Mary Grider Show & Tell. Fay Rawls and Mary Colley introduced Claire James, who presented a short program on family quilts from old fabric. Mrs. James says she married into quilts and quilt tops. Most of the quilts she showed were tops that her mother-in-law made between 1932 & After Mrs. James, guild members presented Firsts and Favorites. The guild was treated to several first or favorite quilts by Jennifer, Shirley Erickson, Terri Jarrett, Suzanne Reeves, Barbara Redman, Ruhanna Neal, Denise Stanchek, Barbie Bugg, Vicki Bauer, Caryn Curry, Mary Colley, Kathy, Donna Phillips, Shirley Bryant, Linda Zacker, Mary Ellen Taylor, Janet Taylor, Cleo Ward, and Fay Rawls. Several quilts from the Charity Bee were also displayed. The Budget was presented to the membership. Marilyn Osterkamp made the motion that the budget be approved, and the motion was seconded by Nancy Bruce. The budget was approved as presented to the membership. Ruhanna Neal gave an update on the Museum Quilt for Terri Bear and Stephanie Chapman. The quilt is ready to be quilted and will cost around $130 to have quilted. A donation jar was passed around during the meeting for the money to do the quilting. Diane Barrett spoke to the guild about Harriett Powers, a quilter with works on display in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Smithsonian. Diane will be curator of a show on African American quilters that will start at the Lyndon House in October. On October 30 th, there will be speakers and programs. The exhibit will open on October 5 th and runs until January Diane asked for help with refreshments, and if anyone could help with sewing on hanging sleeves on September 17 at the Lyndon House. Ginny Lynch, Community Service, reminded members that the Charity Bee meets on Wednesdays from 9:30am to 12pm, and all guild members are welcome. She encouraged members to check out a quilt kit and return it to have your name in the next drawing to be held in December. Some of the organizations that receive quilts are Project Safe, Prevent Child Abuse, Santa for Seniors, Clarke & Oconee County Relay for Life, and the Raffle Quilt for the guild. The Sandy Creek Folk Festival will be held October 2, and volunteers are needed to help. Vicki Bauer, Newsletter, wants to do a new member directory with pictures. Vicki will have her camera at the next meetings, so please be sure and get your picture made for the directory. There are also patterns in the back that can be had for a donation to the Charity Bee. Cleo Ward, Social, needs volunteers to bring refreshments, and is passing around a sign-up sheet. Lola Gazda, Library, told members that the library is self-serve, and to remember to put the card in the box. Also, some books are not coming back in a reasonable amount of time. Please be considerate of your fellow guild members and return library books on time. Mary Colley & Fay Rawls, Programs, announced that next month will be Fiber on a Whim. They will have items for sale at the meeting. In September, Susan Brubaker Knapp s workshop is filling fast. Cost is $25. Mary & Fay reminded everyone of the cancellation policy of 30 days for a national speaker, and 2 weeks for local teachers in order to receive a refund. Anita Heady announced that she will be teaching a beginning quilting class that will meet 2 Saturdays a month. The first meeting on August 14 will be free, remaining classes will be $10. These classes will be held in the Fiber Room. Sixty percent of the class fee will go to Community Service, and forty percent to the Lyndon House. Contact Anita if you would like to attend these classes, or brush up on a certain skill. Dues are due this month. Please wear your nametags as the twenty-five cent fee for not wearing will be resumed at the August meeting. If you do not have a name tag, please see one of the officers. Mary Grider announced members that brought Show & Tell: Barbie Bugg, Phyllis Rother, Amanda Whitsel, and Frances Arnold. Phyllis Rother drew for door prizes, and the winners were Terri Jarrett, Judy Caputi, and Janet Taylor. The meeting was adjourned by Ruhanna Neal.
