From Preprinted Panels Through No- Pattern Creativity (And Dryer Lint)" by Adele Steele (Social time at 6:30 PM) Sat, Feb 20, :30 AM Trash to Treasures Pineapple quilt block workshop President s Message Here in the south, February is a funny month. We could have snow storms, ice or torrential rains. Yet February also brings the promise of spring when hellebores (Lenten roses), daphne, camellias, and early bulbs bloom. We never know what to expect! Quilting or any type of creativity is like that - no matter what the pattern predicts, we never know how the finished product will look. Our program speaker for this month, Adele Steele, will be sharing some unexpected materials and processes she uses to design her art quilts. I hope you will join us and embrace the unexpected! ~Chris Langone Officers President: Chris Langone President-Elects: Fay Rawls & Sherry Paul 1 st VP (Member ed.):?? 2 nd VP (Membership): Pat Schroder & Julie Allen Secretary: Phyllis Rother & Sheila Shepherd Treasurer: Terri Bear Past Presidents: Mary Colley & Pat Dwinell Committee Chairs Bee Keeper: Chandler Pike Challenges: Cleo Ward Community Service: Sue Brassard & Diane Klonowski Door Prizes: Diane Klonowski & Denise Stanchek Show and Tell: Bobbie Monk Internet: Charles Nicolosi Library: Pat Dwinell & Jodie Seila Social: Linda Murray Sunshine: Pat Schroder Newsletter: Nupur Kittur 1

3 Programs and Workshops this month Adele Steele program on Feb 9, 2016: "What If?? From Preprinted Panels Through No-Pattern Creativity (And Dryer Lint)" This fun program is for you- not about me!! : How ALL quilting is "art quilting" and how the question "What If?" can change how you look at color, texture, your threads, patterns and fabric in new ways. CPQ Trash to Treasure Pineapple Quilt Workshop Taught by: CPQ Guild Members Date: Saturday, February 20, 2016 Time: 9:30 am 3:30 pm Cost: FREE but you have to buy the ruler ($15) Where: Green Acres Baptist Church, 2085 Barnett Shoals. When Gyleen Fitzgerald came to our guild last year, she gave us permission to teach her Trash to Treasure pineapple quilt. Those of us who took this class at Hall County Guild would like to share it with you. orders. The class will be free but it will be necessary for you to buy the ruler. Anita can order them for us so at the next guild meeting we will take We would like each person to make one block for us to donate to the charity bee to be used in a quilt, either for charity or a raffle quilt. We will furnish the center block fabric so there will be some uniformity to the blocks. There is also a book that goes along with this but it is not necessary to have it unless you just want it for your collection. It is called Trash to Treasure by Gyleen Fitzgerald. This is a good way to use up scraps. The block centers are 2 ½ square and the strips are 1 ½. So bring lots of scraps. You will need a lot more 1 ½ strips than 2 ½ squares. The strips will need to be anywhere from 2 ½ to 6 in length. The charity bee will be bringing in a large bin of fabric scraps and all workshop participants are welcome to use those. You will also need: Sewing machine in good working order with instruction book in case of a problem. Any color thread. Gyleen uses up all her threads of different colors since the quilt is so scrappy, the color of thread used doesn t matter. Scissors Small cutting board and rotary cutter Pineapple Ruler, it must be the one designed by Gyleen. There are other pineapple rulers out there but they are all different. We will be teaching the technique using this ruler. Small iron and ironing pad (these could be shared) 3
4 CPQ Notes Challenge: It s a Southern Thing. Due Date: June 2016 Meeting The title of our challenge is It s a Southern Thing and the idea is to make a quilt representing something that is characteristic of the southern United States. It may be something that you like about the South or something that you don t like; it may be serious or light-hearted; it may be significant or insignificant. The only other requirement is that the piece finishes at 12" square. I hope you will have fun with it! Cleo Ward Spring Retreat: The Spring Cotton Patch Guild Retreat is coming up soon. We still have a few openings if you'd like to join the fun. You receive 10 delicious meals, a bedroom for 2 with its own bathroom. The sewing room is large with each person using a 6 foot table. A separate cutting/pressing room with mats, irons and design walls is available. Venue: Future Farmers of America Camp in Covington, GA. Dates: April 19 to 22, Tuesday morning through Friday afternoon. Cost: $ per person. Contact Joan Garland at if you are interested or have questions. Hurry, we're almost full up. ~ Joan Garland (jagarland@bellsouth.net) Library: It s time to clean out the Guild s library! Old library books will be for sale at the February meeting. A donation of $1 to $3 would be appreciated. ~ Pat Dwinell Reception: Nancy Lukasiewicz is retiring from the Lyndon House Arts Center after 40 years. Nancy and her husband Ronnie were instrumental in starting the art center in the historic Ware Lyndon House and then its expansion into the new facility. A reception to honor her service will be held this Friday, February 5, 2016 from 1:00 to 2:30 PM at the Lyndon House Arts Center at 293 Hoyt Street. ~Chris Langone Quilts of Valor sew day is on February 10, 2016 at 1 PM at Oconee Senior Center. Stitch and Bitch Bee report The Stitch-n-Bitch bee is a very casual, fun group that meets the first Saturday in the month from 10 to 3 in the Fiber Room at Lyndon House. Most come to work on UFOs, making it similar to the Third Friday UFO Bee, but the Saturday meeting time makes it available to those who work on weekdays. The bee was originally started by Terri Jarrett in the late 90s. At the time Terri was living in a small house, and she wanted a place to spread out and also wanted to get together with other quilters. Mary Grider, the current leader said it was her time to get away from responsibilities at home so she could get something accomplished. When she was a new quilter, it was a good time to get help and encouragement. In 2015, this bee sponsored a charm strip exchange and workshop. Terri Jarrett and Deb Henderson taught partial seaming and participants made a triangle quilt with the strips acquired in the swap. For 2016 the bee will continue to meet, same place and same time and may sponsor another entertaining and informative workshop. Newcomers are welcome. Contact Mary Grider (mwag910@bellsouth.net) for more information. ~ Chandler Pike, CPQ Bee keeper 4
5 Community Service ~Diane Klonowski and Sue Brassard Dog bed scraps: We have made the decision that the Charity Bee will no longer accept scraps for dog beds. We will only use what is generated in the Community Service Bee which will cut down on the volume of beds. Dog beds are a nice gift to the community but they should not take up so much time. Our main focus is to serve the community with quilts. Volunteer hours: The Charity Bee had hours in January (includes 6.5 hours of long-arm quilting by Joan Garland). Several individuals turned out in January. Sue & I would like to see our donations increase. Last year we donated 298 quilts. We want to surpass this number since this will be our last year as Co-Chairs. Our goal is 400 quilts donated by June 30. Helping a hospice: We have had a request from Ashley Puckett, Volunteer Coordinator from Halcyon Hospice in Athens, GA. The Charity Bee is looking into adding them to our charity organizations and sending some lap quilts to them. If you are interested in assisting us in supplying requested items (see below for list): 1. Fidgety blankets: Memory care patients often need something to keep their hands busy. Using different textured fabrics, buttons, beads and zippers on a lap blanket are a great solution to this problem. It brings comfort to the patient and the caregiver when the patient is occupied. 2. Shoulder wrap or lap blanket: Many medications cause blood thinning and patients get cold. Offering a nice handmade shoulder wrap or lap blanket to keep them warm is something special and much appreciated by the patient. 3. Walker/Wheelchair bags: Bags that attach to a walker or wheelchair offer a helping hand to patients who rely on equipment to transport. 4. Catheter Bag Cover: Bags that help conceal the contents of the collection bag offers the patient privacy and peace of mind. 5. Memory bears and other memory items: When a patient passes, we offer the family the chance to give us a special piece of clothing that is then made into something they can cherish as a keepsake in memory of their loved one. Volunteer opportunity in your own time: There are many individuals who cannot participate in the regularly scheduled meetings on Wednesday to do charity work but here is YOUR opportunity to help. Could you take time from your busy schedule to make just one wheel chair tote? Wouldn't it be nice if every member did one?? Find the pattern here: Pictured below: Quilts donated by the Charity Bee to Project Safe (L) and Interfaith Hospitality (R) 5
