1 DEcEMBER 2018 COTTON PATcH DISpATcH PO Box 49511, Athens, GA President s Note It s Black Friday already; how the time has flown! I wish you the many gifts of the season! There is the gift of faith. We are lucky to be able to celebrate our different religious beliefs. There is the gift of light against the darkness, including all the outside decorations which lend a festive air to the month. There is the gift of time with family and friends. Good health is a gift which makes the others more enjoyable. There are many other gifts during this holiday season, such as music and travel. Sometimes we end up in a tizzy and stressed out instead of feeling peace and joy. That s where quilting and quilts can help; I hope you allow time for quilting to calm the nerves. Give yourself the gift of attending the potluck to visit with quilting friends. You ll feel refreshed by the comraderie! I hope you experience the many gifts of December and have a great holiday season! The December meeting is the covered dish meal. The program is the challenge quilts. Bring a dish and a serving utensil! I will be traveling with my family, so Sheila Shepherd will be in charge of the meeting. Please let her know if you want to be on the agenda. Finish up your quilts for the show. AND STAY HEALTHY! 2 CPQ Minutes for November, 2018 Sharon Rockholt called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and then Christina Marie Dickerson acknowledged two visitors and one new member. Sharon announced that due to logistical problems, birthdays will no longer be announced. Thus, none of the members will be aging any more. (For some reason, we didn t give her a standing ovation.) Members were urged to purchase door prize tickets, especially for a mystery basket filled with quilting items valued at more than $100. Tickets for that basket cost $3. Chris Reynolds introduced our presenter, Lynn Rinehart. Program: Lynn s program was titled Quilt Appraisals and covered topics such as: Why quilts should be appraised, How to clean quilts, How to display quilts, and How to store quilts. Old Business: Minutes for the October meeting were accepted as printed in the newsletter. Treasurer s report was accepted with one correction: the amount voted for member education should read $6,320. Anne Flippen gave a moving presentation on Quilts of Valor, which included photos from recent ceremonies awarding quilts to local veterans. Susan Van Eck updated us on the status of the raffle quilt. Joan Garland reminded us that that the spring quilt retreat will be April It will be held at FFA in Covington. Contact Joan if you re interested in going. Nupur Kittur encouraged us to participate in the Art Minis challenge, due at the December meeting. Frances Arnold reviewed information about the coming CPQ show. New Business: Sue Lawrence shared the exciting news that Big City Bread has accepted the CPQ Charity Bee for one of the two charity spots at the Athens Holiday Market at Big City Bread. She reported that it is one of the best attended spots for holiday shoppers who are looking for gifts in all price ranges. We can donate quilts and crafts to raise funds for the Bee s ongoing needs for fabric, batting and other supplies just bring them to the December CPQ meeting. The dates for the sale are December 13 and 14, 5:00-9:00 p.m. CPQ receives requests for someone to finish quilts or to quilt them. Sharon asks that any members who are longarm quilters, willing for her to give out their contact information, to let her know. Ongoing Business: Barbara Waldron thanked those who brought refreshments to tonight s meeting: Elaine Walsh, Dale Shinneman, Lisa Anderson, Cindy Hickson, Susan Van Eck, and Rachel Carlson. 3 Programs December 11, Potluck Let s celebrate another year of good tidings. If you would like to help set-up, be at the Lyndon House at 5:30 p.m. Bring your dish at 6:00 p.m. and we will eat at 6:30 p.m. This year we re going to do something new. If you would like, please bring food items for the Athens-Area Emergency Food Bank. Right now they are in urgent need of cold breakfast cereal & fruit juice. We ll collect them and deliver them for you. Thank you! Those that have signed up to set-up: Sue Lawrence Kyle Howington Mai Whigham Chris Reynolds Barb Waldron Clean-up (everybody is invited) but those that signed up: Vicki Bauer Christina Dickerson Jan Goddard Sheila Shepard Barb Waldron. See you December 11 with bells on. Thanks for your help. Merry Christmas. - Barb Waldron January 8, Syliva Schaefer, Negative Space The speaker for January has been canceled because the quilter s guild we were sharing Natalia Bonner with has had to cancel. We are happy to announce that our own Sylvia Schaefer has graciously agreed to step in and provide our program! Sylvia is the author of a new book, due out in February from C&T Publishing! One of the hallmarks of modern quilting is the use of extensive negative space, but the idea of incorporating so much background area into your quilt designs can feel overwhelming. This lecture, based on Sylvia s new book, The Quilter s Negative Space Handbook, gives you concrete step-by-step ideas on how to begin with a traditional quilt block and then alter it to create a modern quilt. We ll walk through the design process step by step so you ll go home with the confidence to start exploring your own unique quilt designs. Plus, we ll cover suggestions on fabric and quilting choices for your design!

4 Treasurer s Report Submitted by Sarah Marlena Deck Newsletter articles (and pictures!) can be submitted to Nan Thomas and are due by the 25th of each month.

6 Art Minis Quilt Challenge We are getting ready to turn in our art minis at this month s meeting, on Tuesday December 11.
