2 January CPQ Meeting Minutes The January meeting was called to order with 50 members and 2 new members. January birthdays were recognized as printed in the newsletter. Refreshments were provided by Norma Pettigrew, Kyle Howington, Kaleena Stasiak, Linda Zacker, Suzanne Reeves and Lisa Anderson. Thank you for the tasty treats, ladies! Our program this month was from our own Nan Powell who gave us a behind the scenes look at the book publishing world. We all learned how much work really goes into all of the fabulous quilt books that we enjoy so much. Nan did a fabulous job of explaining how she fits into the editing and publishing process as a technical editor. Thank you, Nan! The minutes from December s meeting were approved as written. Several committees made announcements as follows: The Charity Bee is always accepting donations. If you know of someone that needs a quilt or if you have donations, please contact Ellen or Carol. They are also taking donations of 7 in. unfinished HST and 4 patch blocks in fall colors. Please continue selling your tickets for the raffle quilt. If you know of anyone that has not picked up their tickets, please encourage them to do so. This money really helps our guild. There are prizes for the top 2 sellers! The different quilt show committees need everyone s help! Please sign up for a committee (or 2) as this is a large undertaking. The food committee is asking for help in providing food for the show. They are looking for sandwiches, sweets and breakfast items. They can also use water and sodas. Please label all of your dishes and be prepared to pick them up on Sunday afternoon. Please help spread the word for the quilt show by posting flyers and post cards in your town. Chris with ideas of places to hang signage or if you need flyers. Cleo issued a new challenge for us to be due at the June meeting. The challenge is called Spots in My Log Cabin and more information can be found online. The boutique will be receiving items the same time as quilt receiving. They are also looking for props for the boutique area as well. If you have any questions or can help out, please contact Sheila Shepherd. The April retreat will be held at the FFA camp in Covington from April The cost is $165 per person. Please speak with Joan if you have any questions regarding the retreat. Denise Stanchek provided great door prizes this month. There will be a mystery prize at the February meeting. The winners were Carol Ann Burns, Donna Phillips, and Barbara Waldron. 2

3 Phyllis Rother, Nan Powell and Judy brought beautiful quilts and projects to show. Thank you for sharing your work with us! ~ Hanna Chupp Challenge: Spots in my Log Cabin Challenger: Cleo Ward Due Date: June 2017 Potluck Meeting CPQ Notes My challenge to you is to take a traditional log cabin block and alter or adapt it in a new way. Log Cabin includes a whole family of strip-pieced blocks, including Barn Raising, Streak of Lightning, Courthouse Steps, Whitehouse Steps, and literally hundreds of others. You may change the structure, play with value, omit a part, add something, or whatever you choose. You must be able to explain how your work relates to the traditional block. The second part of the challenge is to use some polka dot fabric in your piece. It needs to be more than just a tiny obscure square or strip; it should be a contributing fabric to the overall design. Your challenge piece may consist of one, several or many blocks. There are no size restrictions. This will be due at the June potluck guild meeting. Enjoy! A PDF version can be downloaded from the CPQ website: 3

4 SHOW NEWS!! A Journey in Quilts 2017 Please come to the Opening Ceremony at the Oconee Civic Center at 5:30 PM on Thursday, March 2. Come early to have refreshments in the Rotunda; no food or beverages allowed in the theatre. Please remember the two prize baskets that have been donated by Sherry Paul and Fay Rawls for the two ladies who have made the most money for the guild selling tickets for the raffle quilt. The prize baskets will be given to the winners at the March meeting. Please turn in your ticket money at the February 14th guild meeting in an envelope with your name on it. If you prefer to wait and turn in the tickets at the show, that is fine. Just turn in the money at the meeting. So far we have $1500 for the tickets that have been sold. Our goal is $2000 before the show. We can make this happen!!! If you need more tickets at the guild meeting I will have them. We also need volunteers to sell tickets at the show. There will be a sign-up sheet at the guild meeting for you to pick the day and time that will work best for your schedule. Please don t forget to sign up and help. The drawing for the quilt will be at our March Guild meeting. 5 Show Publicity Please take time to distribute show flyers and cards. We only have a few weeks to let the public know about our fabulous event! If you have extra cards, please bring them to the February meeting. Thanks for all your hard work!! ~ Chris Langone Quilt Show Hostesses I still have empty spaces for every time slot for hostessing. We sell tickets, help the vendors and help the guests navigate the show. ~Mary Grider Quilt Show Kitchen Sunday (March 4) just lunch is provided. The quilt show is a 4-day potluck and therefore needs lots of food and drink contributions. Thursday March 2, setup day, requesting sandwiches and possibly salads, chips and a few sweets. Friday and Saturday (March 2 and 3) breakfast and lunch are provided to show workers and vendors. Make sure if you have a container that needs to be returned, that you have your name written on it. Please do not bring something in your grandmother s crystal! ALL containers must be claimed prior to the Sunday closing of the quilt show. It is helpful if you have your dish labeled as to what it contains. People with allergies and food restrictions ask and my mind does not always grasp the details of your dish! Coffee and teabags will be provided, but bottled water and can sodas are needed for each day. Also looking for an electric pot to keep water hot. There is room to plug up a few crockpots and there is a stove/oven, but no microwave. ~Linda Murray 5

6 Announcing Beverly Fine, our Journey in Quilts 2017 Show Judge She wrote: I made a simple nine-patch quilt for a friend while I was in high school, but I didn t become a dedicated quilter until I didn t know then that it would change the direction of my life, but I soon learned that it was impossible to make only ONE quilt! Now I belong to three quilt guilds. I have found that with every new opportunity to learn, there is also an opportunity to serve. I served as President of the Quilters Connection guild in Watertown, MA, and a four-year term on their Board of Directors. I volunteered as an assistant curator at the New England Quilt Museum. I founded and produced the five annual quilt shows to benefit the Thayer (Lancaster, MA) Memorial Library Building Fund from I became a National Quilting Association Certified Judge in 2003 and served as the NQA Judges Certification Program Coordinator from and again from I co-authored the book Guide to Judged Quilt Shows, available through Amazon. I am currently the Masterpiece Quilt Coordinator for the National Association of Certified Quilt Judges ( with the mandate to recognize the very highest quality of work being done today among quiltmakers. Upon learning that the NQA planned to dissolve as of December 31, 2015, I became a member of the four-person transition team to set-up and organize the new National Association of Certified Quilt Judges. Becoming a judge was a natural extension of my nerdy tendency to research and study. I feel strongly that a judge ought to have done most every technique that comes across her judging table. My judging philosophy is to recognize creativity and the appropriate skills to bring it to life. I hope to encourage all quiltmakers and guide them toward the best possible choices to develop their ideas. I am passionate about making my own original quilts, but consider traditional quilt scholarship important as well. I currently focus my own work on monoprinting (using an etching press and/or fabric marbling) as well as dye-painting and shibori techniques. Dyeing, painting, and printing plain white cloth simply fascinate me. Recently, this has extended into watercolor and acrylic painting on paper. Often, as I play with colors and shapes, an unexpected connection appears and tells me a story. I accept these gifts and nurture them with imagination, some patience, and craftsmanship. By featuring this new cloth in my quilts, personal stories are more authentically told. 6
