3 Cutting Instructions: 1. Cut the fabrics as shown in the fabrics table and as set out below. 2. Cut the 12 ½ houses WOF strip into eight 2 ½ LOF strips to be used for either side of each of the place mats (houses should sit vertically on these strips). Cut the remainder of this piece into five 2 ½ WOF strips. Sew these end to end with the other 2 ½ WOF strips and cut into two 16 ½ and two 52 ½ lengths (to sash the sides and top and bottom of the table runner). 3. Leave the 24 WOF strip whole. Cut the 18 WOF strip into three 14 x 18 rectangles. Cut one more 14 x 18 rectangle from the 14 WOF strip. Trim the remainder of that strip to 24 wide and sew to the 24 WOF strip to make the table runner back. The 14 x 18 rectangles are for the place mat backs. Making the table runner and the place mats. 1. The steps are the same for making the star blocks in both the table runner and the place mats. 2. For the table runner, use: the larger templates; the 6 x 9 rectangles; the 8 ½ squares; and the 2 ½ squares. 3. For the place mats, use: the smaller templates; the 5 x 7 ½ rectangles; the 6 ½ squares; and the 2 squares. 4. For each red star, you will make: twelve cream birds / black tonal half square triangles (HSTs); twelve red snowflake / cream birds HSTs; and twelve red snowflake / black HSTs. 5. For each green star, you will make: twelve cream foliage / black tonal half square triangles (HSTs); twelve green metallic snowball / cream foliage HSTs; and twelve green metallic snowball / black tonal HSTs. 6. For each set of twelve HSTs, you will need one template and two rectangles corresponding to the HSTs you are making. Eg to make twelve cream birds / black tonal HSTs, use one cream birds rectangle and one black tonal rectangle. 7. Pin a pair of rectangles to the back of one of the paper templates with the fabrics right sides together and the lighter fabric next to the paper. 8. Shorten your machine stitch to 1.5 and sew along all of the red lines. 9. Cut the template and fabric along all the blue lines using a rotary cutter. 10. Trim off the corners on each triangle along the green lines. 11. Press each HST unit open. 12. Remove paper from the back of each HST unit. 13. Sew the HSTs and black tonal squares into rows as shown in figs 1 and Sew the top two rows together, the bottom two rows together and the side sections together (fig 3). Add black tonal corner square triangles to the four corners of each of the scenic fabric squares using 2 ½ black tonal squares for the 8 ½ scenic squares and 2 black tonal squares for the 6 ½ scenic squares. Follow steps 15 to 17 and figs 4-6. Figs Mark a diagonal line on the back of the smaller squares (four for each one of the larger squares). Place the smaller squares right sides together with the corners of the larger squares and sew along the marked diagonal (fig 4). 17. Trim away excess fabric beyond the ¼ seam allowance (fig 5). 18. Press the triangles over (fig 6). 19. Sew the side sections to either side of the centre squares (fig 7). 20. Sew the top and bottom rows to the top and bottom to finish the star blocks (fig 8). Figs 7 and 8 Finishing the table runner and place mats 1. Sash the sides of the table runner with the 2 ½ x 16 ½ strips of houses fabric then the top and bottom with the 2 ½ x 52 ½ strips. 2. Sash the sides of the place mats with the 2 ½ x 12 ½ vertical houses strips. 3. Sew the binding strips end to end using diagonal or straight seams as preferred and press wrong sides together along the length to make a double fold binding. 4. Make five quilt sandwiches, basting together the backs, the wadding and the tops of each of the table runner and the place mats using the larger backing and wadding pieces for the table runner and the smaller for the place mats. 5. Quilt as desired then trim square, removing excess wadding and backing. We quilted vertical straight lines ½ apart using an Aurifil 40wt cream thread. 6.
