Making the quilt top The quilt top is made of five A blocks, five B blocks, five C blocks, five D blocks and five E blocks. Instructions and layout images for each block are set out below. A blocks 1.

A blocks 1. The four A blocks are the four 9 ½ squares. B blocks 2. Each B block is made of one 6 ½ square, two 3 ½ x 6 ½ rectangles and one 3 ½ square. 3. Sew the 3 ½ square to the end of one of the 3 ½ x 6 ½ rectangles and the 6 ½ square to the side of the other 3 ½ x 6 ½ rectangle. 4. Sew these two pieces together as shown in the B block diagram. C blocks 5. Each C block is made of one 6 ½ square, two 3 ½ x 6 ½ rectangles and one 3 ½ square. 6. Sew the 3 ½ square to the end of one of the 3 ½ x 6 ½ rectangles and the 6 ½ square to the side of the other 3 ½ x 6 ½ rectangle. 7. Sew these two pieces together as shown in the C block diagram. D blocks 8. Each D block is made of three 3 ½ x 6 ½ rectangles and three 3 ½ squares. 9. Sew the three 3 ½ squares into one long strip. 10. Sew two of the 3 ½ x 6 ½ rectangles together along the long sides. 11. Sew this piece to the third 3 ½ x 6 ½ rectangle (see D block diagram) 12. Sew these two pieces together as shown in the D block diagram. E blocks 13. Each E block is made of one 6 ½ x 9 ½ rectangle, one 3 ½ x 6 ½ rectangle and one 3 ½ square. 14. Sew the 3 ½ square to the end of the 3 ½ x 6 ½ rectangle then sew this piece to the 6 ½ x 9 ½ rectangle (see block E diagram). Assembling the quilt top 15. Sew the blocks into five rows of five following the layout in the diagram below. Press seams between blocks in alternate directions in each row. 16. 4 Finishing the quilt 1. Sew the two pieces of backing fabric together along the long sides using a ½ seam. Press that seam open. 2. Sew the binding strips end to end using diagonal or straight seams as preferred and press wrong sides together along the length to make a double fold binding. 3. Make a quilt sandwich, basting together the quilt back, the wadding and the quilt top. 4. Quilt as desired then trim the quilt square, removing excess wadding and backing. 5.
