For this month s letter, I would like to discuss a culture in our local industry that I am proud to be a part of, and that is safety. I was fortunate to be offered the opportunity to get back into the field recently, working on a drilling rig at Kern Front. It was a great reminder of the hard work put in every day in this industry, and the ever present risk associated with oilfield operations. I remember vividly the first time that I went out into a California drilling operation, and I was struck by the devotion to safe operations from every crew member all the way up to the upper management. Growing up working on ranches, I am accustomed to hands on and often dangerous work environments, but I have never seen the dedication to safety we have here in the valley. It is something that we should not take for granted, and definitely something to be proud of. However, as the old adage goes, there s always room for improvement, so looking forward, let s make sure our vehicles and our minds are prepared for the shorter days, foggy commutes, and rainy weather. This winter we are predicted to experience severe El Niño conditions, and while it may bring some much-needed drought relief, it will

2 October 2015 Page 2 also bring poor visibility, flooding, and mud slides. We have already witnessed the raw power that the weather can unleash, and the only protection we have is preparation and continued vigilance. Let s all stock our vehicles and homes with the necessary safety equipment and supplies, it only takes a few minutes and a few dollars, but it is invaluable when needed. Everyone is well aware that we are going through a tough time in our industry. With the rumor Also, don t forget this month s AADE technical meeting! Join us Thursday the 22 nd at the Rice Bowl in Bakersfield to hear from Chandler Smith with Scientific Drilling. He will be discussing Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage, Synthetic Tool Face, Active - Passive Magnetic Ranging and Directional Applications. These are important topics in our industry, and I look forward to Chandler s presentation. mill at full force, it is very easy to get distracted from your work and lose focus on what really matters. Please remember that we cannot control what happens to our jobs tomorrow, but we can keep our minds and bodies focused on the task at hand today. Let s all redouble our focus on safety and make sure that we can Thank you all for your continued support to the AADE, Craig Hossfeld CRC return home safely to the family we work to support. In other words, keep up the good work. Calendar Events 2015 November 19, 2015 Technical Forum Meeting January 21, 2015 Technical Forum Meeting *This schedule is tentative and subject to change*

4 October 2015 Page 4 LMOTM: Jason Mundorf (San Joaquin Bit/NOV Downhole) I was born in Bakersfield, CA in March of 1977, to my wonderful parents Robbie and Gloria Mundorf. The oil industry has always provided for our family as my dad worked for Reed Rock Bits and Smith International through the 80 s and 90 s; before starting his own company and representing Smith Bits for many years. I graduated from North High School in 1995 and went on to Cal Poly SLO for a couple of years studying animal science, but only mastering in the fun activities of a college beach town. I returned to Bakersfield continuing to take classes while working part-time doing dirty work in my dad s shop. It really never crossed my mind to pursue a job in the oil industry until one day my dad s field salesman gave notice that he would be moving. I got an early morning phone call telling me to get out of bed and that he was picking me up to show me how to do his job. I spent about 6 years learning the business from my father and in about 2002 I was approached by Reed Hycalog to become their representative on the West Coast. With my family s support I became a competitor and started my own business selling drill bits. In 2008, I was approached by Brad Peters about selling my business to San Joaquin Bit Service, after some careful thought we agreed and we haven t looked back since. I am thankful that I get to work with a great group of people every day; I enjoy the interactions and relationships that have formed throughout my years in this industry. I have been on the Board of Directors of AADE for many years and served as the Treasurer for about 5 years. Away from work I live with my much better half Shandon, and our 4 daughters Keira 9, Capri 7, Tylee 6, and Talula 1. We enjoy camping, spending time in the mountains at our family cabin, and time with our close friends and their children. In my free time I enjoy golfing and giving back to the community most notably to the great men and women who have served our country. I ve participated and helped in fundraising for Cooks from the Valley, Wounded Heroes Fund, and Honor Flight Kern County. I currently serve on the Board of Directors for Honor Flight KC, sending WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans back to Washington DC to their respective memorials at no cost to the veterans. I thank the AADE and the entire oil industry for the opportunities and relationships that I have built over the years and look forward to continuing to be a part of this group for many years to come.
