I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. We have some exciting AADE events coming up over the next few months and I hope we can have excellent member participation at each of these events. The first event will be the technical meeting next Thursday, January 20 th. Our guest speaker this month will be Mr. John Daniel with Simmons & Company. John has spoken at our technical meeting before and always delivers an informative presentation. The topic of his talk this month is What does 2011 have in store for the oil patch?. With oil prices approaching $100 per barrel again it will be interesting to hear John s outlook for the upstream oil industry and service companies. I would like to once again thank long time AADE member Bud Frederick for arranging for his son, Randy Frederick, to be our technical meeting speaker in November. I hope all those that attended enjoyed Randy s talk on the Haynesville shale. Other events to look forward to this year are the Semi-Annual Steve Thomas Sporting Clay shoot on Friday, January 21 st. Please contact Pat Sullivan for information about participating in the shoot. We (continued on page 2)
2 January 2011 Page 2 (continued from page 1) will have a technical meeting at Coconut Joe s on February 17 th. We don t have a technical meeting in March. Instead we have the 2 nd AADE Invitational Golf Tournament on March 18 th. Dave Guerrero is once again running the golf tournament this year and will be sending out invitations to our sponsors later this month. I know I always look forward to a great day of golf, food, and fun at Sundale, and I expect this year to be no different. Finally, the AADE Board is considering holding a half day technical symposium in March. It s been over five years since we last had an AADE symposium. More details will be released in the following weeks. In the mean time the Board welcomes any feedback from members regarding interest or topics for a symposium. Pease join us at this month s technical meeting to learn more about the outlook of the oil industry in America. I hope to see all of you at Coconut Joe s Banquet hall on the 20 th. 4 January 2011 Page 4 Lucky Member of the Month Gregory Bowers I attend my first local AADE meeting and I win the door prize. Since my wife was hosting a Sister Chicks bible study at the house, I needed to get out of the house. I took Lonnie Kerley s advice (FIRST TIME) to attend an AADE meeting and I heard a real good presentation about the Haynesville Gas field. As Horace Greeley is often credited with saying this quote:. Go West Young man Go West, I ve been going west from the Green Mountain state (Vermont for all you Geology buffs) the past 34 years. I graduated from Norwich University, a private military college in Vermont, with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. My first job was in Syracuse, NY. I was a Gas Engineer at Niagara Mohawk Power (92% Electric and 8% Gas) converting company vehicles into Natural Gas (CNG) powered vehicles. The CNG program consisted of several fueling stations and hundreds of meter reading vehicles burning clean natural gas. In 1981, an oil boom (we have heard this many times since) started with oil to hit $ 100/bbl by 1982; I took off to Midland, TX to join Getty Oil, in Odessa, TX. The Wild West was alive and kicking in Odessa during the early 1980 s. As soon as the oil prices rose, the oil industry crashes (sound familiar?), rigs are shut down and workers are laid off. For the past 30 years, Merger mania and transfers have moved my family from Odessa, TX to NEWS BRIEFS The AADE would like to say thanks again to Randy Fredrick with Encana for a great presentation on the Haynesville shale. It s great to have a previous recipient of AADE scholarship funds return as a speaker for our Monthly Forum Meeting. We are anticipating a large turnout for our first meeting of Mr. John Daniel will be here for a second time to bring us up to date on the state of the Drilling Industry and what is in store for the next year. For those of you who haven t been to an AADE meeting, we have been meeting at Coconut Joes Banquet facility on Easton Dr.. It may be necessary to park in the Movie Theater parking lot and walk across the street. Be sure to come and support our association. This month is not over with the Monthly Forum Meeting, because we are having our Sporting Clay Shoot again in January. It will be on the 21st which is the day after the Meeting. The entry forms have been sent out and are also included in this newsletter, so if you have not gotten a team together I think there is still time if you hurry. If you do Hobbs, NM to Denver, CO and today Bakersfield. Since I ve been in Bakersfield, CA I ve worn several hats (Getty, Texaco, Chevron, Nuevo Energy, and PXP). I enjoy Bakersfield; I especially enjoy working in the oil industry. We have two daughters who will not be entering the oil industry. My oldest daughter is in Dana Point as an Elementary School teacher and the youngest is getting her Masters in Teaching (MIT program) at Whitworth University, Spokane, WA. not participate, you are missing a lot of fun and good food. Get involved. Also I want to remind everyone that you need to be prepared to pay your yearly dues, it is that time again. All of us on the AADE Board want to wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year!! Travis Adams Office: (661) travis@geodf.com
