It is also one of the AADEs busiest months as we host the final scholarship fundraising event for the award year, compile the financials, evaluate the applicants, and finally award the recipients. None of which could be done without the continued support and generosity of the Chapter members, so thank you! May also marks the beginning of the hot season, so please remind friends, family, and coworkers of the dangers related to heat. Stay hydrated and work safe. Although last month s AADE dinner meeting attendance was a bit below average due to its proximity to the holiday, the content was no less interesting and informative. Paul Blake, an associate professor of engineering at Taft College, gave us a very insightful update on their efforts in developing the engineering program. I am happy to report they have made great progress thus far, and it seems they have a clear plan moving forward. On that note, Taft College is currently in search of individuals who are seeking employment as adjunct instructors in the Energy Tech- nology. If you are interested, please contact me and I will get you in contact with the appropriate personnel. Last but not least, Jimmy Stacey finished the night discussing NOV s agitator system. After a brief discussion of the tool itself, he went on to demonstrate some of regional success in increasing ROPs as well as aiding in weight transfer to allow complex wellbore trajectories. Thank you to Paul and Jimmy for presenting to the Chapter. Besides Taft College, there is yet another energy program in Kern County that many may not be familiar with. Taft Union High School - Oil Technology Academy is a college prep based curriculum with a spe
2 May 2014 Page 2 (Cont. from page 1) cial emphasis on energy technology and application. There are numerous student AADE chapters throughout the college university system; however, TUHS is the only high school chapter in the country. I mention this because a few of us attended their quarterly dinner meeting last month. Aera drilling manager Tim Zdarko was the keynote speaker, and did an incredible job presenting the Facts and Fiction of Hydraulic Fracturing. It was amazing to see high school students so immersed in the discussion; and the articulate questions they posed to Tim were impressive as well. It is neat to see the future of the industry and to know a local high school has been taking initiative for over a decade to educate its students about the industry that surrounds them. We look forward to increasing the frequency of interactions between our chapters. And with the scholarship fund growing year after year it is nice to know that numerous future qualified applicants are being introduced to the energy sector as we speak. Our next dinner meeting will be held next Thursday, May 15 th at the Rice Bowl. Once again we will be hosting 2 speakers at the meeting. Originally, May was slated for only one speaker; however, given the recent political climate, the board thought it was pertinent to invite a representative of CIPA to address the Chapter, especially since we will not be meeting next month. Blair Knox will start the meeting with a brief report of current political and legislative issues that are (or will be) affecting our industry. He will also share insight and strategy on how we as individuals can help educate the public about how safe and sensible our industry s practices truly are. I invite you and anyone in your departments who may be interested to come. Also presenting will be Noe Viramontes, a drilling engineer with Venoco Inc. Thanks to Noe for being gracious enough to share the time. Noe will give a brief introduction of the West Montalvo Field in Oxnard, CA. It is a unique field in which a large part of its aerial coverage is situated offshore, requiring some complex well plans to reach further out as the field is continually developed from a land based drill site. Noe will focus on how the well planning and drilling has evolved over the years to address critical issues associated with pressure transitions in the sands, as well as torque and drag constraints in the directional profiles. I look forward to an excellent night of discussions, and hope you will once again join us. There will not be a dinner meeting next month. As mentioned earlier, the annual AADE hosted BBQ will be held next month on Thursday June, 26 th at the Italian Heritage Hall. More information will be forthcoming, but for now please save the date on your calendars. We are currently in the process of extending invitations to local industry BBQ teams who will be competing for the coveted trophy and bragging rights. Last year s participants offered up some pretty amazing fare, and I suspect this year s event will be no different. I truly hope you can make it. The food is incredible, but more importantly it is an opportunity to see and meet the beneficiaries of our industry s great generosity. It is incredibly rewarding to shake the hands and see the smiles of the recipients. On that note, the scholarship application deadline is approaching fast. There are less than 3 weeks left to complete and turn it in, so please remind any applicants you may know that the deadline is near. Finally, just a quick and last reminder, the annual Steve Thomas clay shoot is only a week away. It will be held May 16 th at 5 Dogs, and I believe there are still a few spots available. Breakfast and lunch will provided as well as the usual assortment of fantastic raffle prizes including a Grand Prize Beretta Silver Pigeon shotgun! On behalf of the AADE Board of Directors and Steering Committee, we look forward to seeing you at the next meeting and very much appreciate your continued involvement and support. Have a great day. Tim Spriet Driltek
3 May 2014 Page 3 Speaker Bio: Noe Viramontes Noe H. Viramontes-Romo is a 2006 graduate of Colorado School of Mines with a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering. Noe has been working for Venoco since February of 2006 within production, completions and drilling engineering facets. Noe started in the Sacramento Basin Asset team in the Denver office before relocating to Carpinteria in 2010 to join the Southern California Unconventional Resource team. He supported drilling efforts in the San Joaquin Valley, and is currently in charge of drilling operations at Venoco s coastal development of the Montalvo Field in Oxnard. Noe will briefly review the history of the West Montalvo field and how the well design has evolved over time in order to meet the objectives of the field development per its relative period. He will review the current field development strategy in West Montalvo and why the need has risen to extend further offshore. He will also compare and contrast the former S-Type well design vs the Build and hold well design as they both relate to West Montalvo's unique drilling environment with respect to under-pressured sands, over-pressure sands, and torque & drag while drilling, logging and running liner.
