The weather was perfect, the course was in good shape and the golfers were in good spirits. The overall success of this event is due largely in part to the efforts of Dave Guerrero; the AADE offers many, many thanks to Dave for making this happen. After coordinating this event for more than ten years Dave has decided to step down and let somebody else have the fun. Dave is leaving behind some big shoes to fill; hopefully the AADE will continue to match the quality event that Dave has established. At this month s technical/ dinner meeting on April 18 th we are very privileged to have local Assemblywoman Shannon Grove as our guest speaker. Ms. Grove, always a supporter of our industry and jobs that are created within our industry, will be addressing legislative issues con- Dave Guerrero Driltek Fred Holmes Holmes Western Kevin Jeffreys Chevron Kevin Killian Trinity Lonnie Kerley PXP David Lopez Chevron Horacio Ramos Aera Pat Sullivan Halliburton Tim Spriet Driltek Tim Zdarko Aera cerning the oil and gas business in California. The industry in California is virtually under siege from proposed hydraulic fracturing laws to a proposed severance tax that has been brought before the California legislature this year. Shannon is very much in touch with these issues and will be presenting her views on matters and providing some ideas on what we as voters can do to combat the assault on our livelihoods. Our March dinner meeting featured Asim Siddiqui and Moji Karimi from Weatherford presenting the advances and benefits of drilling with

Thanks to Asim and Moji for taking the time to present at our monthly forum. Please remember to renew your membership in the West Coast Chapter of the AA- DE. Look for the membership renewal-application details at the end of this newsletter. Memberships can also be renewed online through your 123signup account that is used to RSVP to the monthly dinner meetings. Also, encourage others within your organization to join and participate in the West Coast Chapter of the AADE. Keep your calendar open on May 16 th for the next AADE Monthly technical meeting and May 17 th for the Spring Sporting Clay Shoot. Details for both events will be found in the monthly newsletters. Please join us at the Rice Bowl for the next dinner meeting on Thursday, April 18 th. Make sure that you RSVP as indicated so that we will have plenty of seating (and food) for those that show up. Remember, to be eligible for the lucky member of the month drawing (and winning the $50) you must RSVP. On behalf of your Board of Directors and Steering Committee we look forward to seeing you at the meeting and thank you for your support. 3 April 2013 Page 3 Lucky Member of the Month: Pat Sullivan I am proud to say that I was born and raised in Casper, Wyo and lived there for 28 years before the oil industry started moving me to new locations. I enjoyed the opportunities to go camping, fishing and hunting without the worries of having the next camp site 10 feet away from you, if you could see another camp site through the binoculars, they were too close. I attended the University of Wyoming and have remained a huge follower of the Cowboys over the years. My first job in the industry was with Brinkerhoff Drilling in 1980 as a personnel administrator, Brinkerhoff had 18 rigs working in the Rockies, California and Alaska and I had the pleasure to travel through these areas and meet many interesting people. The culture of the oilfield then really reflected on the term Roughnecks, these people were proud of their heritage and had to fight their way up the ranks to become a driller or Toolpusher (sometimes the term fighting was actually physical). In 1982 I was offered a position in Denver, Co as a regional salesman and remained there until Brinkerhoff opened an office in Bakersfield in 1984 and I was ask (or told) that they needed a representative out there for California and Alaska, so go west young man, and I did! Brinkerhoff was purchased by Grace Petroleum in 1987 which greatly increased our rig inventory and we were able to have rigs working in Washington, the Geysers, central and coastal California and down into the beautiful Imperial Valley. I moved back to Denver in 1992 as the West Coast Sales Manager and after a year and a half Nabors Industries purchased Grace Drilling and guess what? I was ask (or told) that I would be moving back to Bakersfield as the West Coast Manager for Nabors, so go west middle aged man, and I did again. (Something about Bakersfield that keeps me coming back, kind of scary isn t it!) Since leaving Nabors in 1998, I have had the privilege of working with B&L Casing Services (by the way, Larry is really a cool, easy going person to work for, it s his son Brian that you should watch out for!). I had the opportunity to enhance my career and accepted a BD position with Sperry Drilling Services (stay out west old man, and I did!). Since joining Sperry I have had the pleasure to continue working with many of the people I have known for years and the opportunity to meet and work with the new generation of the oilfield. I am blessed to be married to my wife Karyn for the past 22 years and very proud of my son Kyler, 19, who is a freshman at CSUB. I have been active in the AADE since it was started in California and have served on the board for a way long time! I have had the opportunity to organize the Sporting Clay Shoot for a way long time also! The AA- DE has been a great experience and to watch how it has progressed over the years has been incredible, the opportunities that the AADE has been able to give back to the community in the form of scholarships, donations to Pyle s Boys Camp, having the only High School (Taft) affiliate and the people you meet and the friendships made, has been an experience that I will remember forever

7 April 2013 Page 7 Speaker: Assemblywoman Shannon Grove Shannon Grove represents the 34th Assembly District, encompassing the majority of Kern County including Bakersfield, Ridgecrest, Tehachapi, Taft and Frazier Park/Lebec. She was first elected to the California State Assembly in November 2010 and was re-elected in November 2012 by one of the largest margins of any California legislator. Shannon was born in Bakersfield and raised in Arvin, California, where she graduated from Arvin High School. Shortly after high school, Shannon joined the United States Army serving with the Headquarters Company 5th Corps in Frankfurt, Germany. In 1993, she and her sister-in-law formed Continental Labor and Staffing Resources and today Shannon presides as Chief Executive Officer. Her company currently operates four offices in California (Bakersfield, Ridgecrest, Paso Robles and Visalia). Recognized for her dedication to the Kern County industries that feed, clothe, and fuel the state, Shannon was named Vice Chair of the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources. In this capacity, she is responsible for analyzing legislation relating to air and water quality, climate change, energy, and land management. Significant issues expected to come before the Committee include California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) reform and legislation to regulate the oil and natural gas industry s fracking extraction methods. As the first female veteran to serve in the California State Assembly, she also has the honor of sitting on the Assembly Committee for Veterans Affairs. Her experience in the U.S. Army gives her firsthand knowledge that is instrumental to identifying and addressing the needs of those who have acted in defense of our nation. Serving on the Assembly Select Committee on Aerospace, Shannon evaluates issues that are critical to the success of the Eastern Kern County aerospace industry. Shannon represents a region with a long and proud history of being on the forefront of development in this field and her role on this committee supports efforts to make California a more competitive place for aerospace companies to do business. Shannon also serves on the Assembly Budget Committee, where she has been an outspoken advocate for fiscal responsibility and restraint. Other committee assignments include the Assembly Committee on Human Services and the Assembly Committee on Aging and Long-Term Care. Shannon has been honored with the Free Enterprise Award by the Western Electrical Contractors Association for her work fighting against government mandates that burden the California construction industry. She was also recognized with the Champion of the California Merit Shop award by six California construction trade organizations for her authorship of two measures to comprehensively reform the current state law on prevailing wage rates. A longtime business owner, Shannon first became active in the political process to advocate for worker s compensation reform. As a result of her two-year participation in promoting this change, she was honored with the California Legislature s "Small Business Award" in 2005 by then-assemblymember Kevin McCarthy. Shannon is also a sponsor of the "Citizen Legislature" statewide voter initiative, to return California to a part-time legislature, along with conservative commentator Michael Reagan. She envisions a responsible, citizen-run government like California had prior to 1966 and which over forty states still have today. Shannon believes that a part-time legislature made up of people living in the real world with a real job, instead of professional politicians, would diminish the size and scope of the government and respect every tax dollar spent. The effort requires 700,000 voter signatures to qualify as a statewide ballot petition and be placed on the Nov 2014 ballot. Shannon is a member of the Brimhall Road Assembly of God. She resides in Bakersfield with her husband Rick, Operations Manager for KS Fabrication and Machine in Bakersfield. They are the parents of 5 grown children.
