I want to thank everyone that came out for the meeting on August 12 th and especially Ankit Verma and the rest of the folks from Schlumberger for an excellent presentation on LWD technology and wellbore placement. Of course, this was made even better by the impressive turnout the following day for the Fall AA- DE Steve Thomas Sporting Clays shoot. The group raised a hefty sum for the scholarship fund and once again, the organization is poised to give a record amount in scholarship funds and charitable donations to local organizations. That being said, I expect an even better turnout this Thursday, October 17 th, where the AA- DE will be proud to host Tim Kustic, State Oil and Gas Jim Fox Driltek Fred Holmes Holmes Western Kevin Killian Patterson Lonnie Kerley PXP Pat Sullivan Tim Zdarko Aera Supervisor with the Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources. Tim will be giving a presentation titled Hydraulic Fracturing Regulations and Legislation. This is a critically important topic for the current state of the industry in California, if not worldwide, and will certainly guide the future of the industry, most notably in the Monterrey Shale. We look forward to a healthy dialogue and an unhealthy meal at the Rice Bowl starting at 1730 hours on October
2 October 2013 Page 2 17 th. Again, I d like to thank everyone for their continued support of the AADE and our mission to share technology and practices for the mutual benefit of the drilling industry in Kern County and to cultivate the next generation of drilling professionals. We look forward to seeing you next Thursday, and until then, keep it on bottom and turning to the right. 3 October 2013 Page 3 Lucky Member of the Month: Zach Birks I was born in the armpit of California also known as Bakersfield. I attended Highland Elementary and on to Standard Middle School. Both of which are part of the Standard School District that all started with the Standard Oil Company donating the land. I attended North High where I played football freshman year and was involved in Ag. Football only lasted one year, during the summer of June 2006 I went work at GeoDril for Robbie Mundorf. There I worked Monday through Friday as a shop hand. I didn t know anything about the oilfields or drilling rigs in general. I got the privilege to learn about drill bits and all the technology that goes into making them. I enjoyed the work environment so much when school started back up I continued working weekends. Once I turned 16 and was able to drive myself I worked for a few hours after school. In 2007 I took the liking of the cowboy way of life and decided to start riding bulls. In 2008 I junior and High school rodeo d. I graduated from North High in 2009 making honor roll all four years while holding my part time job and rodeoing on weekends. College wasn t in the picture after I graduated. All I wanted to do was work and rodeo. I continued working in the shop full time and pro rodeoing. In 2011 I got in a severe bull riding accident and had to give it up. I wanted to pursue a career as a bit peddler as all the old timers would say. In October of 2011 my dream came true. I started calling on rigs, building new relationships and carrying on old ones. I m currently covering half of kern county as a field sales rep. Now I m 22 years old and have been with GeoDril for 7 of those wonderful years. I m blessed with two wonderful parents Dean and Cherri Birks, my two younger sisters Shelby and Amie, and little brother Jake. I have been an AADE member since 2012 and it is an awesome organization. It provides a lot of knowledge for the younger generation like myself that still have a lot to learn.

Most recently, Kustic had served as the Division s Technical Service Manager and he began his career in the petroleum industry. At the Division, Kustic also served as a field engineer in the Bakersfield and Santa Maria district offices, as manager of the Sacramento district office, and as the Division s Facilities Program Manager.
