1 F in Schools Tutorial A Step by Step Guide To Drawing a Bloodhound Block In SolidWorks There are 7 Achievement Points to Collect During This Tutorial! Requirements: SolidWorks Student Edition or SolidWorks Design Kit

2 Information for F in Schools Coordinator: Welcome to our new range of F in Schools (SolidWorks) Tutorials! In writing these tutorials, we have tried to look at this project from your perspective and in the following ways: You are busy subject teachers whose main priority is your core- curriculum area. You know little about SolidWorks and know it can be a HUGE undertaking to know all there is to know about any CAD package. You want to feel confident to answer student questions and will not undertake these tutorials in front of a class until you are ready to do so. If the above scenario sounds familiar, we are relieved! It means we have understood your needs and have aimed these tutorials in exactly the right direction. We hope the above three issues have been resolved as follows: We know how busy you are! These tutorials have been written with the hope that you can simply hand them out / give yourself some space / let the students explore and discover for themselves / making progress at YOUR pace. We have aimed these tutorials at those with no CAD experience at all. Secondly, neither you or your students need to know all there is to know about SolidWorks for the following reasons:. There simply is not enough time to do so.. You don t need to.. Both you and your students would die of boredom and feel you were either achieving nothing or were achieving far too slowly to remain interested. We have reduced each tutorial down to a manageable chunk for both you and your students to read / attempt / attempt again / attempt again with your own ideas rather than ours. Summary and Suggested Approach As a suggested starting point (and without wanting to teach you how to suck eggs) we suggest the following: The whole group work through the booklets, regardless of chosen areas of responsibility in their F in Schools team. This will surprise you when you hear students wishing to change their roles, having found the software easier or harder than they anticipated! The ACHIVIEMENT POINTS can be used by you as a reward system. Save / repeat / save again / repeat again. This should be repeated until the students are correcting their own errors and drawing their own ideas rather than ours. You may then wish to assign the role of Team Design Engineer having seen who is most capable. As with all of our support materials, we welcome your feedback. 3 For Your Information We will now show you how to draw the block of BALSA-WOOD which we will use to make your Bloodhound car in Tutorial.. OPEN SOLIDWORKS / SELECT NEW as shown below. SELECT PART in the New SolidWorks Document window as shown below, then SELECT OK You have OPENED A NEW PART IN SOLIDWORKS! We will now set up the page so we can start the drawing of your block. SELECT EXTRUDED BOSS / BASE located in the Feature Tab area of the Command Manager Be sure you are in the Features area 4. SELECT FRONT PLANE to create a new sketch as shown below You have SET UP THE PAGE! D. Sankey 00 Page

4 We will now draw your Bloodhound block, starting with the FRONT VIEW 5. SELECT RECTANGLE as shown below 6. DRAW A RECTANGLE as shown below Click left mouse button here then click the ACCEPT symbol to finish then move and click here Note the position of the origin REMEMBER! We click on the Accept button in the top right corner of your screen to accept a D sketch and to make it D! You have CREATED A SOLID OBJECT! We will now make this block the correct thickness STOP AND SAVE YOUR WORK! D. Sankey 00 Page

SET THE EXTRUDE DETAILS on the property manager, CHANGE DIRECTION TO BLIND then ENTER A DISTANCE OF 4mm / SELECT OK to accept the extrusion Set to Blind Select OK Set to 4mm 4 You have CREATED THE BASIC CUBOID! We will now make this the correct shape STOP AND SAVE YOUR WORK! SAVE YOUR WORK / start a new drawing and try repeating everything you have done so far.without looking at your tutorial pages! D. 6 8. RE-OPEN THE SKETCH OF YOUR BLOCK by following the steps below Select + to expand the extrude menu Select Edit Sketch button Right click mouse button on Sketch 9. CHANGE THE VIEW TO NORMAL as shown below 0. SELECT SMART DIMENSION as shown below D. Sankey 00 Page 5

7 . SELECT THE BOTTOM LINE OF THE RECTANGLE / hold down the CTRL key and then SELECT THE ORIGIN as shown in steps & below POSITION THE DIMENSION TO THE LEFT THEN ENTER A DIMENSION OF mm. Click to the left and enter mm, enter or tick to accept Select the bottom line of the rectangle Hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard and select the origin. SELECT THE BOTTOM LINE OF THE RECTANGLE click underneath the rectangle and enter a dimension of 95mm. as shown in step below. SELECT THE LEFT VERTICLE LINE OF THE RECTANGLE click to the left of the rectangle and enter a dimension of 70mm. as shown in step below Select this vertical line then add a 70mm dimension, enter or tick to accept Select the bottom line then add a 95mm dimension, enter or tick to accept 5 You have ADDED MEASUREMENTS! 4. SELECT ZOOM TO FIT as shown below to place your work in the middle of your screen STOP AND SAVE YOUR WORK! D. Sankey 00 Page 6

8 SAVE YOUR WORK / start a new drawing and try repeating everything you have done so far.without looking at your tutorial pages! 5. PRESS ESCAPE ON YOUR KEYBOARD to exit from Smart Dimension 6. RIGHT CLICK ON THE INDICATED CONSTRAINT BELOW then CLICK ON DELETE ON THE POP-UP MENU Right click on this constraint. when menu appears, select DELETE 7. SELECT THE SMART DIMENSION TOOL SELECT THE RIGHT VERTICLE LINE OF THE RECTANGLE click to the right of the rectangle and enter a dimension of 8mm. as shown below Select Smart dimension tool KJHKKJHKJ Select right vertical line of rectangle Click to the right and enter 8mm, enter or tick to accept 8. CHANGE VIEW TO ISOMETRIC / SELECT ACCEPT as shown below Select Isometric view Select Accept D. Sankey 00 Page 7

9 6 You have CREATED THE REAL SHAPE OF THE BLOCK! STOP AND SAVE YOUR WORK! We will now make the hole in the back for the CO gas cartridge which will power your car 9. CHANGE THE VIEW TO LEFT as shown below Open View Orientation menu Select Left 0. SELECT THE EXTRUDED CUT TOOL then select the face of the block shown on screen as indicated. Click here to select this face of your block to position the hole for the gas cartridge. SELECT THE CIRCLE TOOL as shown below Steps + only apply if you CANNOT clearly see the centre of the block. If you CAN move to step 4 D. Sankey 00 Page 8

10 . MOVE THE MOUSE ACROSS THE TOP EDGE OF THE BLOCK UNTIL A SMALL YELLOW SQUARE APPEARS. This will help to find the centre of the block Move mouse until you see this small yellow square. SLIDE THE MOUSE DOWN UNTIL A HORIZONTAL LINE APPEARS. You have now found the centre of the block Move mouse down Look for horizontal line to appear 4. CLICK ONCE ON THE CENTRE OF THE BLOCK move the mouse CLICK AGAIN WHEN A CIRCLE APPEARS as shown below Click once for centre Move and click again to make a circle D. Sankey 00 Page 9

11 We will now make this D circle into the D hole in the back of the block for the CO gas cartridge which will power your car 5. SELECT SMART DIMENSION TOOL add a 9mm diameter dimension to the circle as shown below change the value to 9mm, enter or tick to accept STOP AND SAVE YOUR WORK! 6. CHANGE THE VIEW TO ISOMETRIC and THE DISPLAY TO WIREFRAME AS SHOWN BELOW Hello 7. CLICK ON ACCEPT TO FINISH THE SKETCH 8. SET THE DIRECTION TO BLIND / DISTANCE TO 5MM / CLICK Click OK (tick) to accept Set to BLIND Set to 5mm D. Sankey 00 Page 0
