3 Unit 7 Two-Dimensional Geometry Shape Up! COMMON CORE STANDARDS CC..G. CC..G.2 CC..G.3 Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes. Compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and quarter-circles) or three-dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and right circular cylinders) to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape. Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of. Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares. PURPOSE To assess the ability to recognize, compose, and compare two-dimensional shapes, and to partition shapes into two or four equal parts and identify those parts as halves or fourths TIME minutes GROUPING Individuals MATERIALS Performance Task, paper, pencil, straight-edge Pattern blocks (optional) PREPARATION HINTS Review identifying, analyzing, and composing two-dimensional shapes with children before assigning the task. Review halves and fourths with children before assigning the task. Review vocabulary, including circle, hexagon, rectangle, square, triangle, trapezoid. IMPLEMENTATION NOTES Read the task aloud to children and make sure that all children have a clear understanding of the task. Children may use manipulatives to complete the task. Allow children as much paper as they need to complete the task. Allow as much time as children need to complete the task. Children must complete the task individually, without collaboration. Collect all work when the task is complete.

4 TASK SUMMARY Children identify two-dimensional shapes, compose new shapes from them, and compare them. They break shapes into halves and identify one half. They break shapes into fourths and identify one fourth. REPRESENTATION In this task teachers can Provide options for language by explaining directions in more than one way.
