Committee Members; The following members have agreed to be on the Committee: Rebecca Barnes, Claire Heathcock, Glenys Lonie, Heather McCoy & Hedy Verhulst, CLUB MEETINGS The Management Committee of the Club met at 4.30 pm on Monday 30 November 2015 to sort out arrangements re our Christmas Fair etc. and it was the last meeting for the year. The next Management Committee will be held on Monday 1 February 2016 at 4.30 pm at the Club premises at 28a Grove Street Cairns. Members are welcome to attend and/or bring issues to the Committee at this meeting. A word from the President. It has again been a busy year for the club. Membership has increased and hopefully our Christmas Fair will again be a great success.the new glaze room is now operational and the club has received several consignments of clay and materials for members to buy at low cost during the year. We are still waiting for the Cairns Regional Gallery to give us a date for our 2016 National Ceramics Melting Pot 2016 exhibition, however that does not mean that you cannot start to make your creative ceramic artworks for that exhibition. 3 At the Clubhouse CLASSES: SATURDAY MORNING between 9am and am wheel throwing classes for beginners and advanced potters. Contact Marc Lucas on Classes will start again in February 2016 EVENING CLASSES -Wheel throwing and hand building class for beginners and existing potters who would like to refresh their skills.- Tues and Wed evenings from 6:30 to 9:00.. Contact yuki.koyuki@hotmail.com or (prefer SMS). Classes finish just before Christmas and start again 19 and 20 January 2016 CHILDREN S CLASSES Wednesday and Thursday between 4 and 5.30 pm. Contact Felicity Bury felicity19@optusnet.com.au Children s classes will continue in December until Christmas and start again first week in January OTHER ACTIVITIES: MONDAY AFTERNOONS - Partners In Recovery group classes 1 4 pm finishes at Xmas TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY MORNINGS - CLUB MEMBERS GET TOGETHER Between 9 and 12 noon no cost involved. Members can practise their hand building, wheel throwing, decorating and glazing techniques and perhaps share a firing, also a chance to get to know other potters and share their joy in pottery making. Contact Glenys or Yuki on (prefer SMS) CLUB NEWS ARTNOW FNQ from 27 November 2015 to 15 February 2016 is the final exhibition in the Gallery s 20th birthday exhibition program. It is a new initiative of the Gallery that aims to bring together and celebrate some of the region s most compelling and exciting contemporary artists. 4 NORTH TAFE As you may be aware the Visual Arts Diploma Course at North TAFE became very expensive last year as the previous State Government had cut the subsidies and many potters decided not to continue their courses. Cairns Potters Club through the Visual Arts Association has last year and this year been lobbying both the Director of North TAFE Joann Pyne, TAFE Qld and the State Minister for Education and the good news is that The State Government have recently added the Diploma of Visual Arts to its Queensland Training Subsidies List which means that this program now attracts a training subsidy. Over the past 18 months students enrolled into the Diploma of Visual Arts have been required to pay the full costs associated with the delivery of this program. Now that it is funded, the government will contribute $ $ for each student who enrols in and completes the full qualification. TAFE Queensland North have lobbied hard to have Visual Arts added to the price list so are extremely pleased that we now have an opportunity to develop the skills of those students who wish to work in the creative industries. Visual Arts Courses offered at North TAFE from February 2016 ( so far) Non accredited Visual Art courses For those interested in obtaining specific skills in the visual arts without gaining any Certification these are the courses for you. You can enrol at any time within the study year and attend accredited classes in Painting, Drawing, Printmaking and Ceramics. For 10 consecutive weeks you may attend a timetabled day and receive 3 hours tutoring and have studio access for the remaining 3 hours of the day. Certificate III in Visual Arts CUV30111 Develop both traditional and electronic skills in visual arts and craft, using a range of specialisations. Career outcome I Art Gallery Assistant, further pathways in art Certificate IV Skill Set Visual Arts This course is a transition into the Diploma of Visual Arts aimed at satisfying the Diploma pre-requisites. Students will complete a major project within a personally selected area. Career outcome I Further pathways to specific art discipline Jennifer Valmadre tells me that North TAFE has not sorted out all the courses, so if you are interested in commencing or continuing some visual arts courses, look up the North TAFE website in the beginning of Page 4

5 CHRISTMAS FAIR SATURDAY 5 DECEMBER 2015 Please come and sell your artworks at our Christmas Fair. If you want to have a stall at the fair, then you need to come to the clubhouse around 7am Saturday 5 December. There are still some tables for use by members, so if you want a club table, please contact Lone on to reserve a table, but if you have your own table and/or tent, that would make things so much easier. As well as ceramic and glass works, we are welcoming other art and craft works, plants and goods for you to sell. Commission is as for past events, 20% for members and 25% for nonmembers. This goes to help the club maintain its facilities. On Friday 4 December, Cairns very own arty bus tour will offer participants an insight into the city s vibrant creative community. The open top, double-decker bus will travel to a number of local arts venues, and are coming to the Cairns Potters club from 6.30 to 7.10 pm. The Cairns Creative Crawl offers a perfect opportunity for the participants to check out what local arts and crafts the club has to offer in the lead up to the festive and gift-giving season. All crawlers will come to the Cairns Potters Club, where we plan to sell them food ( sausages), drinks and of course pots, so if you wish to participate bring your pots on Friday afternoon at 5 pm. Each potter can then display some of their works on tables provided and get a chance to talk to the visitors about their pots and hopefully sell some as well. Do not forget our Christmas break up party. Friday 4 December 6 pm and onwards Bring your own refreshments and if you do not want to eat sausages, bring steaks, fish etc and relax at the clubhouse for the evening and get a chance to meet other club members. 7 Ken Ison I had a strong interest in wood turning, but after that first lesson I saw pottery as more of a challenge. Our teacher, the electrical engineer left town, and it was a steep learning curve when I became the designated teacher. Five years later in Cairns, I enrolled in a TAFE course to pursue my hobby, and since retiring and concentrating on pottery, my supposed hobby has evolved into full time production. Firing the kilns commences at 5:30 am every Monday and Thursday to replenish stock for our markets and internet orders, and in response to customer requests we go live with and face book on the 1 st December. (hopefully!) My fascination with pottery began roughly 30 years ago in Jabiru, in the Northern Territory, when mining companies built communities for their workers. The wet season would lock us in, even cutting access to fishing haunts. With a town full of experts a variety of available hobbies and crafts appeared in the Jabiru Times, and I decided to take a pottery lesson. I find working with clay more of a technical challenge, than wood turning and enjoy creating unusual works in clay and experimenting with different techniques and glazes. Page 7
