1 TOOWOOMBA ART SOCIETY LTD PRESIDENT S REPORT Culliford Gallery & Corridor Fred Gardiner Award Toowoomba Jacarandas by Diana Battle Nancy Culliford Prize Moose Deer by Alex Stalling The Members Exhibition opening attracted almost 100 members and supporters, many commenting on the quality of this year s works. Our Patron, Cr Sue Englart, opened the exhibition after presenting her award, and The Chronicle art critic, Sandy Pottinger, this year s sole selector due to the absence of her cojudge, spoke about her selection. My congratulations to Diana Battle (Fred Gardiner Award), Alex Stalling (Nancy Culliford Prize), William Church (Harry Hart Award), Ngaire Winwood (Patron s Choice), Lyn Watts, George Green, Nev Brown, Helen Harris and Devil (Highly Commended) and Ngaire Winwood, Deirdra Drysdale, Edwin Gunn, Therese Alcorn and Audrey Treadaway (Commended). I m well aware that many people don t understand why this is a selected exhibition. In fact it has been, I believe, a sensible requirement in TAS Constitution for many years. Like our other flagship exhibition, the Junior Art Expo, it usually attracts more works than can be comfortably hung, this year being a case in point. When we used to exhibit the selection in the Flowers Food & Wine Festival we had Culliford House for the non-acceptances, but now we only have our premises. If we are to continue to allow members to enter multiple works and choose their own sizes something has to give. The other major decision for selectors is qualitative, which includes our published conditions of entry. Of course no one is happy to be knocked back, but it s something we ve all experienced. Sandy commented that we should consider an exhibition where every member is represented. This is a possibility but would require a limit of one fairly small work each if it s not to look like a bazaar. The Board will discuss this perhaps as an extra, but do remember that every member is given the opportunity to exhibit every year with their group or by applying as individuals. Planning is well underway for TAS 90th Anniversary exhibition at TRAG, opening November 1st. Our archivist, Rhyl Dearden has been driving this. Rhyl and Hugh have relocated to a property near Warwick, so she plans to retire from the Board. You ll have seen our attractive new signage. Thanks to Lee Perinet for designing and Nev Brown for installing them with the help of art society assistants. Nev has taken over as our maintenance man, a never-ending job it seems. 2 PHOTO GALLERY An extremely colourful & well attended Official Opening of the Annual Members Exhibition and presentation of awards last Friday evening. A big thank you to Selector and Judge, Sandy Pottinger and to our Patron, Cr. Sue Englart for opening the exhibition and presenting her Patron s choice award. Inaugural Harry Hart Award It was a very emotional moment for Harry s daughter, Bryony Mills, on Friday night when she saw Lyn Watts entry, Harry on a Wednesday. Lyn s evocative and true-to-life mixed media painting of Harry at work in the studio at TAS is very clever even down to the photographed & collaged newspapers spread out on the tables. It really is a must see! Thank you Bryony for coming to present this year s inaugural award to William Church for his Old Warriors, a very colourful abstract painting full of symbolism and meaning both Harry & Bill had suffered strokes. WELCOME NEW MEMBERS A very warm welcome to our newest members Adrienne Brown, Robyn Croad, Laila Hannay, Lynda Shapcott and Lynne Stapleton. We hope you enjoy and make the most of all that TAS has to offer. 4 I am sorry to disappoint many of you who have been waiting for me to restart my Drawing classes on Tuesdays and Fridays. As most of you know, I spend much of my time at TAS & at home attending to TAS business but I now need to take a little time out for myself. Sorry again, Lee Collecting artworks not selected for the Annual Members Exhibition. Should you need to collect your work before Sunday 27 th September, a member of the Committee needs to be present to open the shed & ensure you sign out your work. Peggy, Diana & Lee are at TAS from 9am to 12 noon on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays respectively. CALLING FOR APPLICATIONS TO EXHIBIT IN 2016 Application Forms are now available at TAS as well as in this Newsletter. To exhibit at TAS you must be a financial member before submitting an application to exhibit form. Firstly, please indicate which space you would like Culliford Gallery (Studio 1) or the Corridor. It is important that you complete the application form fully. Be sure to include your preferences for exhibition months. Should there be more than one application for the same time slot, the date of submission of your application and the information provided (including photos or CDs) may make a difference as to whether you are selected and which of your preferred time slots you are allotted. Culliford Gallery exhibitors pay an Exhibition Fee of either $75 or $150, depending on which package they choose, which must be paid before the exhibition. They also pay 10% commission on sales. Depending on size, works is an ideal number of works for this space. Corridor Exhibitors pay only the 10% commission on sales. Depending on size, works is an ideal number of works for this space. So, get together in your weekly group or with friends, or if you have never exhibited before, take the plunge & book the corridor.
