2 Cmpetitin Categries 1 Fine Art Quilt Masters 2018 Fine Art Quilt Masters 2018 is a juried cmpetitin that is pen t all. Judged by a panel f leading figures drawn frm the art and quilting wrlds, the wrks selected fr exhibitin will be presented in a distinct gallery within The Festival f Quilts The aim is t celebrate thse quilts that transcend craft and demand equal billing with wrk shwn in an art gallery. All textile techniques may be emplyed, frm simple quilting r patchwrk t fabric printing, embridery and creative mixed-media. Judges will be lking fr a fully-reslved cmpsitin and pwerful artistic impressin. Abstract and figurative pieces are equally welcme. Must be an riginal design. Prize Tw Persn Quilts Fr quilts made by tw makers using any technique, t include quilting (hand, machine, lng-arm r a cmbinatin). Participants must declare whether their quilt is the result f pure cllabratin r was prfessinally lng armed. The services f the same prfessinal quilter may be used by mre than ne entrant in this categry. 10 Pictrial Quilts Quilts depicting a scene r subject eg: peple, animal, flwers etc. as the main bdy f the quilt. A figurative r representatinal piece. 11 Miniature Quilts Maximum size f 30cms n the lngest side. Use any technique r cmbinatin f techniques. In a pht f the finished piece (with n indicatin f scale) the miniature shuld lk like a full size quilt r wall hanging. 2 The Quilters Guild Challenge This categry is pen t all members f The Quilters Guild f the British Isles and all Eurpean Guilds which are part f the Eurpean Quilt Assciatin. The theme can be interpreted literally, metaphrically, petically as widely as the maker wishes. Quilts shuld reflect the theme fr 2018: Stitch(ing) thrugh time 1st Prize: nd Prize: 750 3rd Prize: 250 The Open Cmpetitins Categries 3-12 belw are pen cmpetitins and the fllwing prizes apply fr each categry: 1st Prize: nd Prize: 500 3rd Prize: 250 At their discretin, the judges may award highly cmmended status fr up t three additinal quilts. 3 Nvice Quilts Entrants t this categry shuld have been quilting fr fewer than three years. Pieces entered int this categry shuld have been cmpleted within the last 2 years and must nt have been previusly exhibited as part f any event, exhibitin r gallery. Entrants shuld nt hld a frmal qualificatin in a textiles r related subject. 4 Art Quilts Quilts with bth a strng visual impact and a high quality f executin designed t be displayed as artwrk and cmmunicating an idea, emtin r cncept thrugh the medium f textile and stitch. 5 Cntemprary Quilts Quilts that draw n the traditins f quilt making, thrugh piecing, appliqué r whleclth but have an riginal apprach. Makers may use nn-traditinal fabrics, fabric painting and dyeing, embellishment and unusual cnstructin methds. Quilts shuld be an riginal design by the maker and demnstrate sure use f clur. They may be sewn by hand, machine r any cmbinatin. 6 Traditinal Quilts Fr quilts using a traditinal design r pattern. Quilts may be whleclth, pieced and quilted, appliqué and quilted, r a cmbinatin f piecing, appliqué and quilting. Quilting may be hand, machine r a cmbinatin. 7 Mdern Quilts Fr quilts that are functinal, minimalist and inspired by mdern design. Bld clurs and mdern prints may be used, as well as areas f neutral clur t prvide negative space. Mdern quilts ften use asymmetry in design, imprvisatinal piecing, the re-interpretatin f traditinal blcks r the lack f a visible blck structure. They are generally simply quilted with lines f stitching r grid patterns. 8 Grup Quilts A single quilt made by mre than tw makers. Please nte all 3D wrk shuld be entered int the Quilt Creatins categry. 12 Quilt Creatins All entries in this categry must qualify as clthing, wearable art r three dimensinal pieces and shuld include quilting in sme way. 3D items (this des nt include dublesided quilts) must have length breadth and depth. Entries can be made by an individual r a grup. Cverlet Cmpetitin 2018 Only This ne-ff categry will have ne first prize winner nly. The prize will be a private viewing f the riginal 1718 Silk Patchwrk Cverlet at St. Anthny s Hall, Yrk (valid fr 2 peple) during 2019, and a 1718-related gdy bag. 15 The 1718 Challenge This categry is fr quilts that replicate the 1718 Cverlet. Quilts can be full r partial reprductin pieces replicating the blcks and designs used in the riginal 1718 Cverlet: either fllw the design and templates exactly, r interpret the elements t suit yur individual design whilst keeping the spirit f the riginal piece. We aplgise that due t limited space we may nt be able t hang all entries. We intend t cnfirm whether r nt we are able t hang yur piece by mid-june Handi Quilter Best In Shw Award The winner f the Best In Shw award will be selected by an independent panel f judges. Best in Shw will be chsen frm any f the winning quilts with the exceptin f the Fine Art Quilt Masters categry. The winner will be annunced at The Awards Ceremny n the pening day f The Festival f Quilts. Prize 2000.

Equally, it is helpful fr ur administratin and planning if yu can return the frm as sn as pssible rather than leaving it until the deadline. We are particularly anxius t learn abut changes in size since this culd affect the psitin f yur quilt in the display. Entry frms must be received by Friday 1st June 2018 (Friday 4th May fr Fine Art Quilt Masters) The standard Entry Fee is 15 ( 11 fr members f The Quilters Guild f the British Isles and members f the EQA) An additinal nn-refundable fee f 12 is charged t entrants f the Fine Art Quilt Masters categry. The standard entry fee is payable per entrant, nt per quilt it csts the same regardless f the number f quilts yu enter. This fee is nn-refundable. Packaging yur Quilt Sending multiple entries in ne package We will permit mre than ne quilt t be sent within ne parcel PROVIDED: The quilts all cme frm the same persn Care is taken t ensure the weight limits are nt exceeded (see the bx n return pstage fees) It is crucial that yu tape the external packaging labels fr ALL the enclsed quilts t the utside f yur parcel s ur Quilt Angels knw what has arrived. Please nte that we are unable t ffer insurance fr multiple quilts packaged in ne parcel. Please package yur quilts individually if yu wish t be cvered by ur insurance. 4 Chsing a Curier We cannt actively recmmend any particular curier. Hwever, we strngly suggest using ne f the majr brand names and, in particular, a cmpany that ffers cmputerised tracking s they can tell yu exactly where yur parcel is at any given pint in time. If using such a service, yu shuld recrd the name f the curier, the date f dispatch and (crucially) the tracking number. Psting frm utside the UK If sending a piece frm utside the UK, please be aware f custms. Yur shipper will ask abut insurance and als abut custms valuatin. Insurance and custms values have t be the same. Please Nte If yu place a high custms value n the piece, an equally high imprt charge will be levied. Such charges are yur respnsibility as an entrant and it is crucial that yu indicate t yur shipper that any such bill shuld cme t yu. Why nt cllect fr yur friends t! If yu chse t cllect yur quilt n Sunday 12th August, yu will be sent a cllectin slip which yu must prduce when cllecting yur wrk. This cllectin slip will be sent with yur labels in early July We envisage that the first quilts will be available fr cllectin frm 5.30pm and we aim t have them all cllected by 6.30pm T speed the prcess ur quilt teams will return the quilt itself and, separately, yur packaging. Shuld yu wish yur quilt t be repackaged, this can be dne, but pririty will be given t thse prepared t wrap their wn wrk. The prices charged reflect these limitatins and are heavily subsidised (particularly the verseas entries). We anticipate that quilts t UK addresses will be returned by Friday 17th August. 7 General Rules In additin t the specific requirements f each cmpetitin, the fllwing rules and regulatins are cmmn t all. Definitin f a quilt: The structure f a quilt traditinally has three cmplete layers, but a minimum f tw cmplete layers may be apprpriate. These layers must be pierced and jined tgether by stitch. Other jining elements may be added. 1. Only ne piece may be entered per categry. 2. Entries must have ne dimensin (either height r width) f at least ne metre and must nt exceed three metres (this des nt apply t Miniature, Quilt Creatins, Yung Quilter, Schls r Fine Art Quilt Masters). All quilts must cnfrm t any size cnstraints impsed by their categry. The Organiser s standard quilt frames can accmmdate quilts up t 179cm wide by 230cm high; larger quilts can be hung n a wall. Failure t prvide this may mean that the quilt cannt be displayed. (This des nt apply t Miniature and Duble sided). 4. Miniatures must have a 5cm (2 inch) sleeve attached t the back f the quilt unless it features an integral hanging device. 5. Fr the purpse f this cmpetitin, duble sided quilts are defined as thse where bth the frnt and reverse side may be viewed as separate pieces f wrk. The reverse side f the piece shuld be a finished quilt, created t the same standard as the frnt. 6. Duble sided quilts shuld have an integrated hanging methd, either alng the tp f the quilt r between the layers and the quilt must nt exceed 179cm wide x 230cm high in rder fr it t be hung effectively. 7. Please nte that it is nt always pssible t display bth sides f a duble sided quilt. This is particularly true f smaller quilts that d nt fill the dimensins f a display frame r thse that are versized (bigger than 179cm x 230cm). Where it is nt pssible t display bth sides, the quilt will be labelled as Duble Sided with a nte asking visitrs t request the assistance f a Steward if they want t see the reverse. 8. The decisin fr the categry entered is the sle respnsibility f the maker. Quilts will nt be mved t anther categry after the entry frm is prcessed. 9. If there are any specific r unusual hanging requirements, a hanging plan (diagram) must be included inside the packaging with yur quilt. 10. Entries may nt be accepted if they arrive after the 27th July. 11. We reserve the right NOT t hang wrk that cntains any sharp r dangerus materials r which, in the rganisers view, is unsuitable in any way fr display. 12. If yur quilt cannt be hung n a standard batten (r is entered int Quilt Creatins), please prvide a clear hanging plan with yur entry frm. 13. Labels will be sent t each entrant t enable us t identify yur quilt. Please ensure this label is lcated n the bttm left hand crner as yu lk at the back f the quilt and that a flap f fabric cvers the label n the back f yur quilt t ensure annymity during the judging prcess. 14. All entrants must be aware that thrugh their participatin, bth the rganisers, Upper Street Events Ltd and The Quilters Guild f the British Isles will have the right t utilise phtgraphs f the wrk within their wn prmtinal publicatins, apprved publicatins r within magazines and newspapers. Occasinally, wrk may be als seen n televisin. Where pssible, the artist will receive full credit. 15. Other than in the Grup, Schl r Fine Art Quilt Masters, an entry must have been created by the persn entering the piece. Quilts sent t a lng arm quilter must be entered int the Tw Persn categry. 16. We endeavur t hang all pieces which cmply t the Rules and Regulatins where we receive an entry frm by the due date, but this cannt be guaranteed and the rganisers reserve the right nt t display any piece fr whatever reasn. 17. The Judges decisin is final. 18.
