Started in 1994, the exhibitin cntinues t represent the vitality and creativity f lcal artists. The Bermuda Biennial prvides an pprtunity fr lcal artists t engage in an internatinally juried prcess, which strives t represent the excellence f Bermuda s cntemprary art. Since 1998, Bacardi Limited has generusly been the Signature Spnsr. Since 2015 the Bermuda Biennial is a member rganizatin f the Internatinal Biennial Assciatin, raising this imprtant exhibitin s prfile marks the Biennial s 12th iteratin. The Bermuda Biennial will: present artwrk that is well-cnsidered and well-executed; engage an internatinal jurr frm a respected art institutin/ rganizatin; be structured arund a theme; be n exhibitin at Bermuda Natinal Gallery and submissins dependent, at The Natinal Museum f Bermuda and the City f Hamiltn; serve as an educatinal resurce; and be archived in a catalgue. 1

2 Theme fr 2018 Bermuda Biennial What We Share Jurr Melissa Messina Melissa Messina is an independent curatr based in the U.S. and the Artistic Directr f Flux Prjects in Atlanta, GA. She has recently guest curated fr the Visual Arts Center f Richmnd, VA, as well as the SCAD Museum f Art, Savannah, GA, where she was frmerly their Interim Executive Directr and Senir Curatr prir. Messina has rganized exhibitins in the U.S., Eurpe and Hng Kng including sl exhibitins fr artists Lynda Benglis, Nick Cave, Teresita Fernandez, Tim Rllins and K.O.S., t name a few. Messina was frmerly the Natinal Prgram Directr fr ArtTable, in NY, where she develped the public prgramming fr the Prspect.1 New Orleans biennial. She has been a guest curatr at the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center fr Feminist Art at the Brklyn Museum where she was frmerly a curatrial and research assciate during the Center s pening in Her frthcming exhibitin Magnetic Fields: Expanding American Abstractin, 1960s t Tday (c-curated with Erin Dziedzic) will travel t the Natinal Museum f Wmen in the Arts in Washingtn, D.C., frm the Kemper Museum f Cntemprary Art, Kansas City, MO, later in Applicatin Guidelines Deadline fr Applicatin: Thursday, February 1, 2018; 4:00 pm Eligibility Requirements: PLEASE READ CLOSELY All applicants must be at least eighteen (18); Applicatins are pen t all Bermudians, residing in Bermuda r living verseas; Applicatins are pen t all freign natinals wh have been resident n the island fr at least six mnths during the preceding tw years (January 1, 2016 thrugh December 2017); Artwrk must have been cmpleted between January 2016 February 2018; Artwrk MUST NOT have been previusly exhibited n the Island; Artwrk shuld be available fr viewing by the jurr the mnth f February

3 Number f Submissins: Artists are invited t submit up t five (5) artwrks/ prpsals fr the exhibitin. Submissin Requirements: A nn-refundable applicatin fee f $40.00; a tw-page applicatin frm cmpleted in full and signed; ne disc / memry stick that includes: 1) digital images f artwrk; 2) prpsal (if applicable); 3) shrt bigraphy; 4) artist statement; 5) black & white headsht. 1) Digital images: - ne digital image fr each submissin; - each digital image needs t be JPEG digital frmat, 360 dpi minimum, and f printable quality frm 2 MB t 5 MB in size; - each digital image given a title (ie. landscape1.jpeg) that crrespnds t the title n the applicatin frm; - the BNG takes n respnsibility fr the handling f discs/ memry sticks and, unless therwise ntified, will be kept in the BNG archives. 2) Site-specific prject prpsal details (if applicable) Artists may submit site-specific prject prpsals. Lcatins t be cnsidered include: the Bermuda Natinal Gallery, the Natinal Museum f Bermuda r within the City f Hamiltn. A prpsal represents a submissin and must include: a) a clear written utline f the cncept; b) a detailed graphic plans f the fabricatin and installatin; c) a clear illustratin f the prpsal, thrugh scale mdel, drawings and/r JPEG digital images; and d) clear lcatin selectin. 4) Bigraphy: 250 wrds r less; listing nly: Name, Birth Year/ Cuntry, Lives & Wrks, Educatin, Selected Sl Exhibitins, Selected Grup Exhibitins. The inspiratin fr these is drawn frm my childhd memry and frm my bicultural heritage. The phtgraphs are a synthesis f my persnal blend f Puert Rican and American cultural perspectives. As a result f the cnflated cultures within the cnstructed image, I created an imaginary space bth within and beynd the phtgraph. The rad is a vestige r a representatin f a jurney and its presence is symblic f life s many trajectries. The cncepts f fragility and the ephemeral quality f a hme are sme f the imprtant factrs in my prcess and my artwrk. In the creatin f each phtgraph I am a scavenger and editr f light, cmpsitin, frm and clur within the cnstructed envirnment. The delicacy and frailty f the materials are tw imprtant factrs in my wrk, and they fregrund the passage f time thrugh the instability f the medium used. My wrk als fregrunds the ephemerality f life thrugh the destructin f the wrk, frm which nly the phtgraph survives. Basically it s all a preparatin and it desn t last frever. The use f paper fr the structures is a great cmparisn f life within a hme, whether pr r rich, a hme is always fragile accrding t its physical r emtinal state.
