ABOUT THE INSTRUMENTS The Jembe jem-bay (also spelled djembe in frenh) is a mortar-shaped drum from West Afria, speifially the Susu and Malinke ethni groups

It s shape omes diretly from the large mortars that are still used to this day to pound rie and millet into flour for ooking.

Professional jembes are tuned with rope, using a method ommonly known as the Mali Weave.

When played in the seated position, the drum is tilted away from the player to allow air to pass through the bottom of the shell (see photo).

ABOUT THE INSTRUMENTS The Jembe jem-bay (also spelled djembe in frenh) is a mortar-shaped drum from West Afria, speifially the Susu and Malinke ethni groups loated primarily in the Republi of Guinea. It s shape omes diretly from the large mortars that are still used to this day to pound rie and millet into flour for ooking. The body is arved from a single hardwood log and the head is made of goatskin. Professional jembes are tuned with rope, using a method ommonly known as the Mali Weave. The jembe is traditionally played while standing, strapped to the player and hanging between the legs. It may also be played while seated. When played in the seated position, the drum is tilted away from the player to allow air to pass through the bottom of the shell (see photo). The lead jembe should be tuned the highest to allow it to be heard above the other drums. While the aompaniment jembes are not tuned to speifi pithes, their pith should reflet their part in the ensemble. (1st is higher than 2nd) Other drums inlude the dundun (doondoon) whih are large, barrel-shaped drums with two heads. The dundun are played with stiks and provide the foundation for the daners and the other musiians. Dundun (doon doon) The Dundun are played individually, sometimes with an attahed bell (kenken).

(Example: Oakland qui i be. ) Authenti instruments are important to use beause they: - provide an aurate representation of the soni qualities of the instruments. - onnet the students with the ulture from whih the instruments originate. - allow for important learning opportunities, suh as tuning and drum are. - support the eonomis of the ultures and people where the musi originates. - are made by experiened raftspeople who are skilled and knowledgeable. - look, feel, play, and sound like the real thing - beause they are! Create a simple drum & dane arrangement by having students: play the Alto and Bass xylophone parts, aompanied by the seke-seke. sing the song, A Borono. play the dundunba, sangban parts after the break (played by teaher or student) play the djembe 1 pattern after the break. perform the Marou Dane Step 1 in a irle. dae lok-wise or CCW, hanging diretion after the break. dane IN for four (1-2-3-Clap), then OUT for four (1-2-3-Step) take turns entering the irle, alone or in pairs, daning with a sarf.
