4 PREFACE (from the First Edition) The ompletion of this ork has been one of onstant delays, revisions, editing and diffiult deisions It as originally omposed as a tune book for fiddle players in 1985 By 1995, I disovered that I had sribbled many tunes don and as at a loss at hat to do ith them, so they traveled along ith me ithout muh thought After a fe years of remaining hidden aay and negleted, I seleted a number of the tunes and added harmony to them, those being the ones I felt ere the most interesting and hallenging In 1999, I finally aquired a omputer and the proper musial softare and ent to ork editing In preparing this ork for publiation, I had a diffiult time deiding the overall sope and format of the book After onsidering the options, I experimented ith a fe of the tunes, and ame to a deision to present the musi ith rhythmi bass line aompaniments The onderful advent of modern tehnology made my ork muh easier and effiient, and alloed me to edit the tunes for playability Thus, the idea to expand the melodies on out, and it evolved into the ork you no have in your hands The idea of the first, single melody fiddle-tune book as intended for eduational purposes as it pertained to fiddle players alone In its present edition it is intended for keyboards, but also any C instrument may use it by simply reading the treble line as the aompanist provides simple hords, et The tunes range from easy to moderately diffiult in regards to tehnique and exeution I have purposely omitted ertain markings of musial expressions in the musi, suh as slurs, boing and fingering indiations and speifi metronome markings that ould normally be present in performane-ready material The musi is left open to the performer to interpret Some musiians ill undoubtedly reognize the baroque flavoring of some of the piees The upper melody line (as ell as a fe of the bass lines) may be improvised upon, as is ommon pratie among musiians of Traditional Dane Musi The musi serves a three-fold purpose; firstly, the performers of Traditional Musi may freely arrange the tunes to fit their tastes The art of improvisation should be stressed as to the plaement of trills, rhythm alterations, et Seondly, teahers of a variety of musial instruments may utilize the musi to instrut students in the rudiments of their instrument, phrasing and omposition The teaher, student or performer, giving the musi a personal quality may omplete the unmarked musial notation Thirdly, students are more likely to pratie if they have some input into the musi The variety of styles may also aid students of musi to broaden their interests in other areas of musi history I believe that studies in Baroque and Classial Musi usually produe better interpreters of the Traditional musi of Ireland and Sotland I should hope that speaks for itself through the medium of the performers on reative proess and musial interpretation and that they ill enjoy them as muh as I did riting them GOD BLESS AMERICA! 5 Prefae To the Seond Edition I have been long at putting this ork out and hope that it is a general improvement of my first opus, as I have gained some inreased understanding of keyboard musi omposition and have had aess to better tools in hih to format the musi The first editions of most orks are alays rather rude and amateurish, as authors tend to analyze, over time, their previously released orks and see many flas in the original prodution This is the ase ith the Garden of Harmony, hih being far from a perfet ork in and of itself, needed several improvements and I hope that this edition ill have met those neessary goals This edition has undertaken the task of eliminating unneessary printing of notated repeats, improved voiing hanges, hord hanges and endings, and took into onsideration the simplifiation of some left hand tehniques for hords, as the original seemed diffiult to render properly on the keys a ommon fault of many violinistomposers Fe neessary revisions ere done to make to musi more readable and professional in presentation The ornaments and dynamis are left to the performer, but some suggestions are present in this edition The tunes are arranged in alphabetial order for ease of loation With all that in onsideration, I leave you to use the orks, as you ill, for your personal musial enjoyment and entertainments DOMINUS VOBISCUM Jerald Franklin Arher Mother s Day, 2010
