Cross Joints The new, fast way to create a cross section in yor Movement Joints Key benefits Innovative and time saving Integrates seamlessly with or range of Colored Movement Joints Cross Joints are qickly completed withot the hassle of ctting and shaping Using a pre-formed cross joint saves time - negating the need for ctting 45 0 angles into the movement joint strips Easy fitting of other movement joint stips speeds p the task 6
Movement accommodation is a serios consideration for installers. Heated floors, large format tiles and difficlt sbstrates all pt extra stress on tiles projects. A major challenge in managing these stresses occrs when a sbfloor design creates a need for srface movement joints to intersect. Creating the reqired for-way jnction is technically demanding, time consming and expensive. Located where sb floor joints cross and the srface joints intersect, the Cross Joint is anchored within the adhesive bed, (sing the exact techniqes as expected for intermediate movement joints profiles). The distance between Cross Joints is linked sing intermediate movement joints. Ctting to size and length is a simple matter of making straight cts as reqired. In comparison with forming a traditional for way jnction, the degree of skill, effort and time reqired is minimal. A complete movement joint installation can be prepared and be ready for the tiling work to commence in mintes. Or innovative joints: Provide Independent movement in all directions Are available in all materials, colors, effects & finishes Depths from 3mm to 30mm in stainless steel & 3mm to 50mm in Alminim and Brass Are fixed the same way as standard movement joints Are extremely cost effective Cross Joint are available for the fll range of Dral Economy, Draflex and Premim Colored Movement Joints inclding marble and speckle effect. 9 Heated floors have become more effective and poplar. Rigid hard floors mst be protected from expansion and contraction. Tension and stress can be very damaging to the tiled srface. Micro Joint infills are an effective way of easing this sitation. Traditional movement joints can be obtrsive and disrptive in the floor srface. Micro Joints easily replace the grot line between tiles as a perfect color match. Effective stress relief for tile and natral stone on heated floors Unobtrsive and color matched Combines with existing grot lines for a discreet appearance Can follow brick bond and ops pattern Micro Joint has an approximate 45 Shore A hardness rating when cred Micro Joints mst not be sed as sbstittes for strctral movement joints. The gide lines for this type of jnction can be fond within the British Standard 5383 and the Tile Associations varios pblications. Generally these joints comprise a central flexible section spported on both sides with metal profiles. They mst be located directly in line with and over any pre-existing joints in the sbfloor constrction. If any sch joints exist please conslt or technical department before installing Micro Joints. Tiled flooring layot Micro Joints pathway Avoid this! 11 Premim, Perimeter and Formable Movement Joints Premim Movement Joint Pictred above: A Movement Joint at Cheltenham Racecorse (cortesy of SreSet Permeable Paving). Pictred above: Formable Movement Joint installed at a shopping centre Premim Movement Joints Perimeter Joints Formable Movement Joints Colored Movements Joints are prod to introdce Premim Movement Joints for installations where elegance and sophistication combine for a wow-factor installation. Ideal for Hard Flooring, Natral Stone and Slate, or Premim Joints create a stylish designer look for high-end applications. We are now able to offer movement joints with a speckled effect and a marble effect, which will beatiflly complement any designer floor application. The same rles apply for the positioning of movement joints externally any pre-existing joints in the sbfloor mst be contined throgh the tiled srface. Perimeter joints mst be installed where applicable. The most important difference for external movement protection is that the freqency of joint dobles or another view is that the protected area or field of tiling to be protected halves. This intention is to protect the installation from thermal shock where, for example, the tiled srface can be heated very qickly by the Sn even in Winter then be cooled rapidly by rain. The choice of material for external joints is limited. Any alminim based prodct will over time sffer corrosion at the exposed top edge. Brass based profiles will also sffer discoloration bt will maintain their strength. The natral material for se externally is stainless steel which will resist weathering and will retain its strength for many years. On occasions it can be necessary to follow a joint in a sbfloor which crves. Using special profiles we can manfactre a movement joint which can be formed to prodce crves. We are also freqently asked to prodce sch prodcts for aesthetic reasons to provide delineation between areas of flooring. An example of this wold be for Volkswagen UK where the design reqirement for their showrooms was for a prodct to both protect the ct edges of the tiles and delineate the areas of tiling which consisted of circlar areas of tiles set into the backgrond of a contrasting color. For the installer this provides an easy way of flfilling the designer s creative ideas. Or movement joints are sitable for se with ceramic tiles, natral stone and seamless materials sch as epoxy resin flooring. Dral (UK) Ltd Telephone: info@dral.co.k Web: 11
Selecting the right Movement Joint Damaged hard flooring - where the crack rns in parallel with the path of the sbfloor movement joint Pictred above: Damaged Movement Joint 1. Weight load and traffic over the joint 2. Color co-ordination In order to select the right Movement Joint for yor project the following criteria needs to be considered: Car Showrooms, Spermarkets and Retail premises are typical projects where alminim based Movement Joints are sed. They provide good movement accommodation and excellent tile edge protection. For commercial and indstrial se where the weight over the joint is high sch as areas where forklift trcks and loaded heavy pallet trcks operate, Stainless Steel spported Movement Joints are a better choice. Stainless Steel is also recommended in areas where chemicals are present sch as swimming pools and food prodction nits where an aggressive cleaning regime is reqired. Every project has a design theme and a lot of time and effort is spent choosing the right type and color for a floor covering. It is often an nwelcome design aesthetic to have a Movement Joint standing ot in a beatifl sweeping floor design bt Movement Joints MUST go where Movement Joints mst go to protect the floor Handy tip Stainless steel Movement Joints provide excellent movement protection and have greatly increased strength allowing for great load bearing. For technical information regarding load bearings, please refer to page
When and where to se Movement Joints Ti l e adhesive Incorrectly placed Movement Joint Hairline crack following the path of the sbfloor Movement Joint Ti l e s Sbfloor Movement Joint Concrete sbfloor Some basic rles Or advice Handy tip If there is a joint in the sbfloor it mst be followed throgh exactly in the tiled srface. Ignore this at yor peril! The maximm area of tiling mst not exceed 10 metres x 10 metres If the floor section exceeds more than 2 metres x 2 metres then a perimeter joint mst be installed Tiling in corridors mst be protected by being sbdivided with a minimm of 10 metres between the joints Perimeter joints mst protect obstrctions within the floor area sch as pillars, fixed plant or featre For more information on selecting the right Movement Joint for yor project, why not book or in-hose CPD presentation; Modern Movement - Controlling Movement in Hard Floor Finishes. See page 22 for more details. As a starting point se the pre-existing joints in the sbfloor for yor layot bt don t forget the perimeter reqirements. A joint in the sbfloor or a change in materials (sch as concrete or screed to timber) is a sitation that reqires a movement joint at that point. A kitchen extension or the addition of a snroom are typical sitations where vertical movement occrs. In order to determine where to place the profiles it is necessary to inspect the sbfloor becase day joints in the screed or pre-existing compond joints will often be the deciding factor. Many of these existing joints are approximately 6 metres apart (British Standard gideline is a max of 10 metres) which can often case problems with tile layots leaving some awkward cts. Some sbfloors are monolithic and have no sbdivision. In these sitations the movement joint position can be adjsted to best sit the aesthetic layot of the tiling following the 10 metre gide. 14 When it goes wrong Avoid this! 14
When it goes wrong As sad Movement Joint fanatics we check ot floors wherever we go. It s always bad news when we see a failed floor. We want people to be happy with the installation so that they se tiles again hopeflly with or prodcts. The prpose of this section is to highlight what happens when basic rles are not followed. The most common cases of failre are completely avoidable. These are: Placement Solid Bedding Incorrect Choice of Profile All movement joints mst, yes MUST be placed directly over each other throghot the floor strctre. A moments thoght will see that if the prpose of a movement joint is to absorb movement, placing it anywhere other than where that movement happens is not going to help. Worse still, by bridging the area of movement with a rigid tile, (of whatever material), it is obviosly going to crack at that point. A typical example of this error is where a fairly straight crack appears in the tiling, sally abot 10cms or less away from where the movement joint is actally fitted. Cracks can appear alongside perfectly placed movement joints. Typically these wold be half moon in shape. This are de to a failre to ensre that the fixing flanges of the movement joint are flly embedded into the tile adhesive. All reptable sppliers of movement joints will stress the importance of this solid bedding. Not only is it needed to flly spport the tiles at this vlnerable point bt also to ensre that the extension and compressive forces within the floor are flly transferred throgh the spporting profiles to the flexible infill material. A simple test for this falt is to take a 1 coin and se it to tap along the edges of the tiles alongside the movement joint. Where the tiles are solidly fixed the sond is dll. Over hollows in the bedding the sond will change to a sharper, clearer tapping. Invariably if the tiles are lifted for investigation this simple test has proved accrate. This problem is in two parts both of which can affect the longevity of the tiled installation: SIZE the depth of the movement joint mst match that of the tile and adhesive bed. Ideally the top of the movement joint shold be slightly below that of the tiles. (1 to 2mm maximm). Under no circmstances shold the movement joint be prod of the srface. MATERIAL This is an example of over optimistic cost saving. Plastic Movement Joints have a very limited se in domestic and very light commercial areas. In ALL other circmstances please please se a movement joint with metal side spports. They cost more bt their performance is absoltely sperior to plastic. Handy tip If yo are a Specifier or Installer and reqire specific Movement Joint installation instrctions, please contact or team of friendly flooring experts on telephone Dral (UK) Ltd Telephone: info@dral.co.k Web: 15
Technical Information Introdction All hard flooring moves independently by expanding and contracting at different rates so it is a reqirement for flooring installations to have Movement Joint protection. Movement Joints are an effective way to protect ceramic and other hard floor coverings from the stresses that case cracking, tenting or popping on the srface. Clients generally do not like movement joints becase it is felt that they can be obtrsive and spoil the aesthetic appearance of their careflly chosen floor. Specifiers and installers know that Movement Joints need to be sed to absorb the natral movements in the floor. Architects are reqired to specify prodcts that are fit for prpose and conform to bilding reglations and installers have a dty to provide good advice and workmanship. What ever yor job title, or team of friendly and experienced staff are on hand to help gide yo thogh the reqirements of yor projects. 16

Sitable for internal se only and offers medim levels of edge protection from mechanical impact. This profile shold not be sed in harsh chemical environments. Cold rolled profile manfactred from AIS1304 Stainless Steel. Recommended for se in food preparation areas, commercial kitchens, breweries and dairies etc. Also highly sitable for se in leisre environments inclding swimming pools. In dry areas of leisre facilities Stainless Steel V2a (grade304) is adeqate, and in wet areas other than showers, for example in Swimming pool srronds, we wold recommend grade V4a (grade 316). Extrded angles from grade OT58 brass. Highly resistant to chemical attack and mechanical impact. Sitable for internal and external se. Dral (UK) Ltd Telephone: info@dral.co.k Web: 17
Technical Information Compressive Performance Extensive Performance UV Performance It is important that the performance of any Movement Joint in this area is adeqate. If the joint is too stiff the tiles can pop or tent along the joint line and in other areas as the stress in the installation is transmitted elsewhere. British standard reqires a minimm movement absorption capacity of 20% of the infill width. Or infill exceeds this figre with a minimm capacity of 30% in both extension and compression. A common problem with Movement Joints is the breaking ot of the profile. This can be cased by poor workmanship in the anchoring of the profile fixing flange. However if the infill material is too stiff, the natral resistance of the joint will overcome the strength of the anchorage and the joint will break free. The infill of choice for or range of Movement Joints is a special flexible epoxy resin. It has significant advantages over synthetic rbber sed in standard joints available on the market, not only de to it having a mch higher movement accommodation bt the fact it is UV resistant and will not fade and discolor prematrely from exposre to snlight. Point Loading A movement joint infill mst achieve a balance between flexibility to absorb stresses within the floor and drability to resist degradation from traffic. The standard width of or infill is a minimm of 6mm. This is reqired by BS5385. In effect this narrow srface area is protected by the metal side profiles against all bt the narrowest of impacts. Or experience is that a Shore A hardness of approx. 45 is ideal as the compromise between drability and flexibility. Or infill is strong enogh to resist damage from stiletto heels and or prodcts have been sed extensively in high traffic retail and transport facilities sch as Airports and transport interchanges. We can also spply wider or narrower joints as reqired. For the wider joints the width of the exposed joint wold likely reqire the se of a different material for an infill. We wold sggest that in those circmstances we carry ot a site srvey to ascertain the likely loads and demands to be placed on the prodct. Load Bearing Movement Joints shold not be considered as a load bearing component in a floor. The correct installation method reqires them to be solidly embedded into the tile adhesive. Any voids in the adhesive bedding along the fixing flange are nacceptable. Ideally the top edge of the profile shold be 1 to 2mm below the edge of the tile. This creates a sitation where the movement joint becomes a stepping stone for traffic over the jnction. Any weight is absorbed throgh the metal profiles and transferred throgh the adhesive bed into the sbstrate. In practical terms a rogh gide is: Mainly Pedestrian load Alminim, stainless steel or brass Shopping trolleys Hard wheeled lggage Car showrooms, retail environments Heavy wheeled traffic Stainless steel or Brass Fork lift trcks, Hard Hard wheeled Pallet trcks Hard castor tool trolleys Motor repair workshops 18
Large Format Tiles Hygiene Movement Joint Sizes There is a trend for larger format tiles which are often fixed in a brick bonded pattern. This can make the installation of movement joints problematic becase the joints across the bonded pattern can be very obtrsive. The installer shold explain to the client the absolte need for movement joint protection. If this advice is ignored and the client insists on no movement joint protection then the installer shold ask for an indemnity against any related problems. It shold be noted that this is not always a defence against a claim. British Standards The gide lines for installation and positioning of Movement Joints are based on the recommendations of BS This is a very comprehensive docment which covers topics not immediately applicable to or type of prodct. In common with most manfactrers we précis the gidelines to provide immediate practical advice to the specifier and installer. The other major sorce of information are the gidelines provided by The Tile Association. The TTA are more involved on a day to day basis with the problems Where hygiene is of concern we wold recommend that the spport profiles are stainless steel. We can offer two grades: Eropean grade V2, UK grade 304 Sitable for passing contact with food sbstances Eropean Grade V4, UK grade 316. Fll catering standard material as sed in commercial Kitchens and food prodction factories In the circmstances where a movement joint wold be installed on the floor it is nlikely that any food coming in contact wold be consmed. The higher cost of V4 wold not be jstified. encontered in real life sitations. Their gide lines can change as experience of actal installations grows. An example of this is their gidance relating to heated floors. These have changed to reflect actal demands on installations. We wold recommend that anyone concerned with sch a project contact s for the latest opinions on this sbject. We are pleased to offer free site srveys and advice, please contact s to arrange a srvey. Selecting the correct depth of profile. The correct choice of movement joint depth is vital for the longevity of the profile and project. The aim is to select a profile height that will reslt in the installed joint being set slightly below the tile srface. In common with all profile sppliers we observe the convention of qoting the internal height of the angle as the size reqired. The reason to this is that the fixing flange which is approx. 1.5mm thick is embedded into the adhesive bed sally arond 3 4mm in depth. For example, a 10mm tile pls adhesive bed gives an overall installation height of 13mm. A 10mm movement joint has an overall height of 11.5mm. When installed together the reslt is that the top edge of the profile is a perfect 1.5mm below the top srface of the tiles. This height difference prevents any impact damage. Therefore when ordering for a specific tile thickness please select the same qoted size of movement joint. See page 12 for more information on selecting the right Movement Joint. Heated Floors Over the last decade there has been a growth in the se of both electrical and wet system nder floor heating and a parallel growth in the se of large format tiles has created a new set of problems for the installer. The first thing to remember is that the rapid expansion and contraction of the sbfloor creates a very high level of stress, mch higher than an nheated floor. Gidance from the British Standards has not kept p with the needs of the installer, The Tile Association however have been more forthcoming in recognising that more gidance is needed. Essentially, gidelines are the same as a standard installation bt with redced field sizes. The TTA sggests that no field of tiling shold exceed 40 sqared meters with no one side exceeding 8 meters in length before a stress-relieving joint is installed. Or advice: De to the high degree of stress within these installations, we sggest that there shold be a distance of no more than 5 meters between stress relieving joints. It is a big mistake to ignore these sensible rles becase sbseqent problems are very difficlt to correct. Heated floor protection See page 8 for more information on how or Micro Joint Infill can help tiles installed over heated floor systems. Dral (UK) Ltd Telephone: info@dral.co.k Web: 19
