Woodturning on Vacation When I was traveling out west, the Black Hills, Yellowstone, etc. I stopped by Sam Angelo's shop in Worland, WY and had the privilege of meeting The Wyoming Woodturner. While, there, he taught me how to chase threads which is one of his specialties. I spent a couple of hours there and we discussed his YouTube channel and how he made videos and also how he photographed turned objects. He cored a dish out of a Box Elder blank and I took it home to finish up. It was a lot of fun meeting him and getting to know him a bit. 2 PREZ SEZ Rich Thelen Chainsaw Carving Championship For the last several years the Chainsaw carving/sculpture championship has been held near the museum in Carson Park. This year we have been invited to have an exhibit including a Learn-to -Turn event. We will be needing volunteers for this four-day event. We will do Learn-to-Turn on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. We need volunteers to fill (6) 3.5 hour shifts, two each day. It is a great opportunity to get our message out and to pick up new members. And you get into the championships for free. Annual Summer Picnic The annual Woodturners picnic will be held at Bob Eberhardt s cabin near Colfax on Saturday, July 25th from 12-4pm. It is a pot luck dinner. Drinks and plates, etc. will be provided by the club. There will be an area available to show off your best pieces and an opportunity to tell us all about them. The afternoon highlight is a wagon pull around his property to see the wildlife. Bring your spouse and your projects. This is always a great event and a very enjoyable way to spend a Saturday afternoon in summer. Barry Grill Professional Demo Barry Grill will present an all-day demo at the clubhouse on October 24th. He will demonstrate deep hollowing using some of Joe Nycz s tools. Barry has been a professional demonstrator at all of our previous Expos and has done commendable work. This will also be an AAW regional event where turners from all of the nearby clubs will be invited to attend. Cost will be $30 and lunch will be provided. Pre-register so we can get you signed up for lunch. UW-EC Ceremonial Mace Professor Susan Harrison from UW-EC has asked us to make a ceremonial mace to be used at official university functions such as graduations. The mace is tall and has a medallion bearing the seal of the school inlaid into the top. Ron Bartz is taking care of this project and has already sent a couple of sketches to Professor Harrison. UWEC will donate $2500 to the guild to make this mace. Not bad.

JULY DEMONSTRATION Celtic Knot Richard Ryan Richard Ryan gave an in depth demonstration of the theory and math of making a Celtic Knot. Richard had several examples of each stage of development; cutting the wood; placing in an inlay; gluing up and final results. A step by step instruction sheet was handed out so that members who wanted to try a Celtic Knot would have a handy reference.

CELTIC (DOUBLE WAVE) CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT / BOWL From Richard Ryan Demonstration Materials *Body: 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 2 5 inches of dry cherry/walnut/cedar etc. *Inlay: 3 x 2 1/2 x 1/8 inches (approximately what you take out with the cut) *Stem: & Finial: 1 x 1 x 6 inches (more or less) dry maple/walnut/ cedar etc Tips for getting inlay to meet correctly *First, most important on the second cut, glue up and alignment has to be right on *Lay out both sides and end before any cutting make sure end and sides are square. *Stay on line with blade as you cut piece should always lay flat on band saw table. *Check that the band blade is 90 degrees to table, guides, etc. Practice cut. Body Make first cut, glue, check alignment, wait 4 hours. Second cut, glue check alignment, wait 12 to 24 hrs before turning (don t microwave for this could loosen glue. Turn body into a cylinder and square end. You are ready to shape the main body. Shaping the stem at the top of body would be an option. Shape and sand as much as you can. Last, drill 1/2 inch hole to remove middle of body. Stem & Finial (come out of the same piece) Chuck up the 1 x1 x6 inch piece. As you are turning it around, note any knots and decide which end to start with. Put 1/2 inch tendon on one end. Check the fit for the body bottom finial top. (decide what is bottom and top to the main body.) This needs to be sanded for about an inch and chuck this fit up (1 x 2 x 1 inch). If the stem is on, go on to finial; if not turn the stem tendon end first, checking fit up. Sand, finish, and part. You have the fit up for the finial already in the chuck. Remember to keep using the live center for both pieces. Do all of the turning and sanding now. Last thing is to part the bottom from the live center and finish.

New Equipment Acquisitions New equipment includes a Delta Lathe (12 1/2 inch variable speed midi ) and a Grizzly Bandsaw (14 inch /G0555). The lathe was purchased for the group by Tools Officer Tom Schye. The lathe came with a stand, bed and stand extension, tools and chucks. The bandsaw was bought from a member (Lee Hansen) who was downsizing his shop and gave the group a good deal. The bandsaw was needed to replace the aging bandsaw that needed a new motor and the lathe goes toward the group goal of standardizing the lathes.

U.S. Chainsaw Sculpture Championship in Eau Claire The U.S. Chain Saw Sculpture Championship will be held this year from August 6-9 at the Paul Bunyan Logging Camp Museum in Carson Park. Approximately 13,000 people attend each year. A lot of kids attend also. They have asked us to participate at this year's event. They would spot under a "big-top" style tent, where food is eaten. In the past the carvers have had tables and information available as well as an apple-carving training event for kids. It has been very good for their mission and they always get more members at this event. In addition they are listed in the press releases. I worked a table last year with the carvers and helped to teach kids how to carve an apple. I think event would make us visible to more people than any other event we have done. Check out their website at It would also require a lot of volunteers. The carvers did their training about 20 minutes per hour. See July Meeting Minutes for our participation discussion and schedule Schedule of Events (2015 schedule will be similar) August 7, 2014: Thursday Free admission day (Sponsored by Xcel Energy): 10:00 am to 6:00 pm - Competition and Guest Carving/ Inflatables & Activities for Kids August 8, 2014: Friday (Eau Claire Ford Social Night) 10:00 am to 6:00 pm - Competition and Guest Carving/ Activities for kids 5:00 pm - 10:00 pm - Pizza, beer and wine 5:00 pm - 10:00 pm - Charity Auction 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm - Quick Carve Competition 6:30 pm - Judging of Sculptures 7:00 pm - Auction of Sculptures 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm - Meet & Greet With Carvers 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm - Entertainment and Social Time August 9, 2014: Saturday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm - Competition and Guest Carving/ Activities for kids 11:00 am to 5:00 pm - Charlie Schaaf and Model Train Classics 6:15 pm to 7:00 pm - Quick Carving 7:15 pm - Auction Various Times - Family Story Telling August 10, 2014: Sunday 10:00 am to 1:00 pm - Competition Carving 10:00 am to 2:00 pm - Guest Carving 10:00 am to 4:00 pm - Inflatable's and Kid's Activitise 1:00 pm - Judging of Sculptures 3:00 pm - Award Ceremony 4:00 pm - Auction of Carving

Chippewa Valley Woodturners Guild Meeting Minutes July 1, 2015 Present: President Rich Thelen Treasurer/Membership Officer Keith Jones Program Director Mark Palma Tool Director Tom Schye Newsletter Editor Tom Leonard Member Ron Bratz Keith Jones: Balance of $ Paid membership is 77. Tom Schye: New Delta Lathe is in place. Cost of $ Other expenses of $ for tools, chuck and other accessories. New Grizzly Bandsaw has been purchased and is on site. Cost was $ Will sell old one. Ron Bratz: Dr. Susan Harrison approached the group to turn a ceremonial mace for $2500 for the UW Eau Claire. Wood would be supplied by the UW in the form of left over wood from the Counsel Tree and from a crabapple tree planted in memory of Kent State. There is also cherry wood that could be used for a mace stand. Ron has talked with Dr. Harrison about this proposal and presented an idea for it. He will work with one or two other turners to first produce a prototype before making the actual piece. Rich Thelen: We will participate in the U.S. Chainsaw Championship next month August 6-9. Discussion revolved around how many lathes to take for learn to turn and how many members would have to be involved. We would be there from 10am to 5pm necessitating 2 shifts per day. Discussed was if 3 lathes were taken, we would need 3 to man the lathes and one for crowd contact to explain group and membership. With 3 lathes and 3 1/2 hour shifts, it would take 32 bodies over 4 days. It was decided to reduce the lathes to 2 and be there for 3 days instead of 4 reducing manpower to 18. Because the Saturday of the Chainsaw event falls on our Open House Saturday, the Open House will be the next Saturday the 15th. Also discussed was a Boy Scout Merit Badge in woodturning. One member suggested it. It has not been asked of us to consider at this point. Discussion revolved around number of hours for one to warrant a merit badge. A decision was made to shelve it for now because our calendar is too full for the rest of the year.

Pen Wood Blank Identification Common Name: Black and White Ebony, Pale Moon Ebony Scientific Name: Diospyros malabarica (syn. Diospyros embryopteris, D. peregrina) Distribution: Laos and southeast Asia Tree Size: ft (15-35 m) tall, 1-3 ft (.3-1 m) trunk diameter Average Dried Weight: 51 lbs/ft3 (825 kg/m3) Color/Appearance: Heartwood is a pale straw color, with darker black streaks throughout; some pieces may be predominantly black rather than white. Sapwood is a paler white color, not always clearly defined. Grain/Texture: Generally straight grain with a fine, uniform texture and good natural luster. Endgrain: Diffuse-porous; medium to large pores in no specific arrangement, few; solitary and radial multiples of 2-3; heartwood deposits occasionally present; parenchyma reticulate, diffuse-inaggregates, vasicentric; rays narrow, spacing close. Rot Resistance: Reported to be very durable; moderate insect/borer resistance, though portions of the wood commonly have insect holes present. Workability: Generally works and turns well, though pieces can be difficult to dry without checking. Odor: No characteristic odor.

Allergies/Toxicity: Although severe reactions are quite uncommon, Ebony in the Diospyros genus has been reported as a sensitizer. Usually most common reactions simply include eye and skin irritation. See the articles Wood Allergies and Toxicity and Wood Dust Safety for more information. Pricing/Availability: Not commonly available, Black and White Ebony is very expensive, on par with solid-black species of ebony. Sustainability: This wood species is not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Common Uses: Turned objects, inlay, and other small wood projects. Comments: Density is reported to vary significantly depending upon the concentration of darker heartwood as compared to the lighter sections. Related Species: * Ceylon Ebony (Diospyros ebenum) * Gaboon Ebony (Diospyros crassiflora) * Macassar Ebony (Diospyros celebica) * Malaysian Blackwood (Diospyros ebonasea) * Mun Ebony (Diospyros mun) * Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) From the Wood Database : Cameo Gold Twist Pen from Penn State. It is a large pen that required bushings that produced 4 different end sizes. Though it looks like a click pen it is not. The twist mechanism works at the top end of the pen instead of at the middle of the pen. Notice in the picture with the pen parts, there is no separate twist mechanism. The twist mechanism is in the clip assembly. This pen was probably made either with the wrong wood or the wrong turn design. I can t call it ugly but it is certainly the least appealing pen I have ever made. So note to self is to consider design, wood and the style of pen kit when making a pen.
