PREZ SEZ UWEC Our relationship with UWEC is continuing. They have asked us to produce mementos so they can give them to visiting dignitaries. Ron Bartz will be coordinating this event. We will use more of the council oak tree and the remaining parts of the Kent State crabapples. The challenge to club members is to bring a prototype of available wood and bring it to the next meeting. We will then invite UWEC in to look them over and which ones they choose. Feed My People Free Wood We were fortunate to have the Chainsaw Carving event donate two large tree trunks to us for use in making bowls for Feed My People s event in March. Many were taken from the last meeting, but more remain. The wood is somewhat green so turn it rough quickly and then put it in a bag of shavings for 3-4 months. Then final turn your bowl. You will be able to make part of your Empty Bowls commitment early. Thanks. Rich Thelen Rich Thelen and Mark Palma visited Roger Leonard at his shop on Sept 12th. Roger is having chemotherapy treatments and has not been able to do much turning, so Mark volunteered to help make a peppermill for Roger's brother. Marc will be preparing the blank for Roger. Roger will then do the final assembly and testing. They visited Roger's shop to pick up the peppermill blank and mechanism. Roger is looking good as you can see from the picture.

Demonstration: Joe Nycz and Pepper Mills John De Ryckere's note: Instructions on drill sizes and depths are mill specific. Consult the instructions which came with your kit. Here are the instructions which would come with the kit Joe uses at < The particular kits that Joe uses are a combination salt shaker and pepper mill. The top is a salt shaker, the bottom is a pepper mill. Joe demonstrated two different methods of making the mill. First, two blocks were used, one for the shaker (top), the other for the mill (bottom). For his mill the top needs to end up at 2", the bottom at 4". Tenons and waste have to be on top of these measurements or the threaded rod will not fit properly. You can turn the sections between centers, or between tailstock and face plate/chuck. A chuck may work better because a square face needs to be ensured. A skew leaves a nice surface, keep the tool rest high to avoid catches. Rough turn to a cylinder. True the face, and cut a tenon. Remount the piece in the chuck using the tenon. Joe makes sure that the tenon isn't too deep, that the jaws of the chuck make good contact with the surface of the cylinder. Joe uses a Forstner bit to drill a 1-1/16" hole through the pepper mill bottom). Joe then uses a 1.5" forstner bit to the proper depth and uses the salt shaker sleeve to refine the depth. He then turns the outside to the desired shape. For a polyurethane finish (good for things like this which are handled frequently) he only sands to 220 grit but does use the proper progression of grits up to that point. The jaws Joe uses also work well in expansion mode. He reverses the piece, and remounts, and uses the 1.5" Forstner bit for the bottom. This is done to a depth of 3/8". He then

mounts the piece for the cap. The procedure is similar to the above. He mills through with a 1-1/16" Forstner bit. He then turns the outside shape. There is a cap (where the salt comes out), which needs to be properly milled using a 1.5" Forstner bit. Again, he uses the cap itself as a depth guide. He finishes up with shear scraping. He applies a 50/50 mix of Myland's sanding sealer and alcohol. The alcohol keeps it from getting gummy or sticky. He then uses purple scotchbright to knock down the grain. When drilling holes for the mechanism in the bottom Joe angles the holes. This makes the screws more secure because you're not drilling completely into end grain. Second, Joe turned a pepper mill/salt shaker from a limb You need at least 2 to 2.5" of extra wood length to account for tenons, smoothing facing surfaces etc. Joe starts off by making a 1/4" tenon, and then mounts the piece in the 4 jaw chuck. There is a tenon at the top and bottom. Joe marks off the major layout lines (top and bottom - shaker and grinder). He turns the top and bottom to rough at the same time, and measures often.he also places layout lines for major features of the turning (coves and valleys for decoration). Once this is done he separates the top from the bottom (you can use a parting tool, or a saw). He takes advantage of the extra wood to clean the face of the bottom (which is now chucked - the top is a separate piece now). He then uses the Forstner bit to carve out the interior etc. For sanding the interior he uses forceps to hold the paper (safety - putting your fingers inside rapidly revolving pieces of wood can have undesirable consequences). Joe made his own bung chuck (layers of rubber, tighten a bolt and it gets wider). He an mount chuck in the 4 jaw chuck, and then mount the top using this.

Navaho Border Patterns for Segmented Turning Feature Rings by Bill Kandler You know what they say about idle hands This spring, I got to thinking about doing a Navaho border pattern for a new project. I started playing with the cutting angle and make up of the diamond, the width of the slice, and the size of the saw kerf. In doing so, I came to realize that there s an awful lot of variability in the result that comes from being able to change each one of these items. So many were the variations, and the results differed so much from the starting point, that I came to the decision that I needed to put together a model of the process. A model so I could see what was going on. And, when you have a model, you get to make the rules. Did I say rules? No, I meant to say no rules. The border pattern is usually made with a double border. But what would it look like with a single border or a three-part border? Wow! Here are four examples to show what I mean: Starting Diamond Sliced Result

Figure 1 is a 30 degree diamond with a double border. The slices, 1/8 thick, are cut with a bandsaw. It results in a kind of snowflake appearance because the inner border color matches the surrounding material. Figure 2 is a 40 degree diamond with no distinct borders; just color and contrast. Again the slices are 1/8 thick and cut with a bandsaw. The result is truly wild. Figures 3 and 4 are 45 degree diamonds with a single border. The border is narrow in Figure 3, 1/8, while it s ¼ in Figure 4. So, how does one go about constructing such complex segments? Read on Start by assembling the lamination board. For this step it is important to mill all the stock to the same width, which makes it much easier to get everything lined up. The first wood is the middle, which is then flanked on either side by the next wood, which is then flanked on either side by the next wood, and so on. You should end up with something that looks like this: Now set up your saw for making cuts at the angle specified in your design. For this one, it s 30 degrees. Also set up a stop block so that all the strips will be cut at the same width. And, be sure the saw blade is dead on vertical. The lamination board needs to be as long as needed for the strips plus some extra for safe handling during the sawing operation. After sawing, you now have this assembly of pieces: Now take alternating strips and turn them over (left to right or right to left) and you have the Diamond pattern shown below. At the least, you now need to glue the strips into pairs. But for safety in processing, it s a good idea to then assemble the pairs together temporarily using hot melt glue or an equivalent. Do this against a straight edge so you can be sure that all the points line up. If they don t, you won t be able to get the points to line up in the ring you later construct from the Diamonds.

Now you have a set of ZigZags from which you make Diamonds. But first trim off any excess material from the top and bottom of the design. Now locate the exact center (vertical) of the design and cut the entire assembly into two horizontal halves and slide the top/bottom to the left/right to reveal the diamond pattern. Phew! Now we can finally start slicing. Set up your slicing situation with a sawing fence with the appropriate spacing between the fence and the saw blade. Starting from the center of each half, slice away until you have exhausted the stock. Do this for both the top and bottom halves. Oh!, and keep track of which slice goes where. Now, flip each slice over, top-to-bottom. Last step! Carefully glue all the slices together, taking care to keep the pieces vertically aligned. One way to do this is to clamp blocks across the ends of the slices. This will keep things from moving around as you clamp along the strips. You can t use too many clamps for this activity. With a good slicing

blade and really hefty clamping pressure, you ll find that there is no need to sand the slices before gluing. All that s left to do now is make the pieces into segments. That s likely a two step process as you first need to break the glue-up down into segment blocks and then make the miter cuts. The trick here is to be sure that you make the miter cuts so that the two halves of each Diamond unit are identical. Otherwise you won t be able to get the points to line up in the ring. Now, you re almost ready to go off and try this out for yourself. And to make sure you really can, and do it easily, I ve created a new designer as a Plug-In for my Segmented Project Planner that does it all with Diamond design, slicing, and detailed construction instructions (you just read them). Want to slice something else? Well, there s also a pure Slicing designer, as well, that helps you to slice virtually anything you can construct. 9 PEN WOOD OF THE MONTH Common Name(s): Red Maple Scientific Name: Acer rubrum Distribution: Eastern North America Tree Size: ft (20-30 m) tall, 2-3 ft ( m) trunk diameter Color/Appearance: Unlike most other hardwoods, the sapwood of maple lumber is most commonly used rather than its heartwood. Sapwood color ranges from almost white, to a light golden or reddish brown, while the heartwood is a darker reddish brown. Red Maple can also be seen with curly or quilted grain patterns. Grain/Texture: Grain is generally straight, but may be wavy. Has a fine, even texture. The growth rings tend to be lighter and less distinct in Soft Maples than in Hard Maple. Rot Resistance: Rated as non-durable to perishable in regard to decay resistance. Workability: Fairly easy to work with both hand and machine tools, though maple has a tendency to burn when being machined with high-speed cutters such as in a router. Turns, glues, and finishes well, though blotches can occur when staining, and a pre-conditioner, gel stain, or toner may be necessary to get an even color. Odor: No characteristic odor. Allergies/Toxicity: Red Maple, along with other maples in the Acer genus, have been reported to cause skin irritation, runny nose, and asthma-like respiratory effects. See the articles Wood Allergies and Toxicity and Wood Dust Safety for more information. Pricing/Availability: Should be very moderately priced, though figured pieces such as curly or quilted grain patterns are likely to be much more expensive. Sustainability: This wood species is not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Common Uses: Veneer, paper (pulpwood), boxes, crates/pallets, musical instruments, turned objects, and other small specialty wood items. Comments: Red Maple is appropriately named, as its flowers, twigs, seeds, and autumn leaves are all red. Red Maple is common over a very large area of the eastern Untied States, and its wood tends to be slightly heavier, stronger, and harder than other species in the grouping of Soft Maples, though it is still not as strong as Hard Maple. From the Wood Database ( Note: This wood is from the Maple received at the Chainsaw event. I m not totally sure if this is Red Maple. There is no generic Maple. Several species of Maple were noted in the Wood Database to have reddish brown coloration of the wood and this wood does have a reddish brown or pink hue to them. Of all the pictures that Wood Database had of the various Maples, only the Red Maple had a distinctive pinkish hue similar to the Chainsaw event wood. The pen blanks came from the bark edge of the wood. I had intended to throw away this bark edge but the mixture of colors and patterns caught my eye and I thought it would make an interesting pen. The pen itself is a Slim- Line with gun metal hardware. As expected some of the bark did come off despite my putting Ca glue on it but it gives it character.

Present: President Rich Thelen Vice President Barry Grill Membership/Treasurer Keith Jones Secretary John DeRyckere Program Director Mark Palma At Large Duane Walker Newsletter Editor Tom Leonard Board of Directors Meeting September 7,2016 Keith Jones Treasurer's Report (posted in club) Member report: 88 paid, 1 new, 1 renewal Rich Thelen submitted a bill for batteries for the clock, (approved unanimously) Rich Thelen We are continuing our discussion about our opportunity with UWEC. Ron Bartz is leading the effort looking for ideas to create small gifts for distinguished visitors from the remnants of the Council Oak Empty Bowls Oak and maple were donated for empty bowls. The planks have been cut into bowl blank sized pieces. Barry recommends rough turning and then either anchor sealing or storing with shavings for 6 months. This will reduce cracking. Guest Demonstrator Lindell Anthony would like to demonstrate at the club. He had very deep vessels which he showed off at our former expos. Charges $100 plus expenses (from Dubuque Iowa). Since Barry did deep hollowing recently, Lindell can demonstrate other skills. Mark Palma We need to discuss the future of our participation at the Chainsaw Carving Expo. We should consider setting a lower age limit, or height limit on kids. Maybe two lathes, but add a tent to sell items? End earlier on Sunday, before the judging takes place? Mark will be demonstrating/teaching at Woodcraft in Minneapolis

CVWG General Meeting - September 2016 Wood for Empty Bowls Wood has been donated for Empty Bowls from the Chainsaw Sculpture event. Barry Grill was approached about the wood that the sculpturers didn t use. The person supplying the wood didn t want to have to haul it away. Discussion turned to handling this wet wood. Some suggestions were: Turn to inch thick Anchor seal or latex paint, or coat in candle wax to slow drying leave for 6 months, then finish (just in time for Empty Bowls) Or put rough bowl in bag with shavings in warm place for 3 months Most pieces are 8 or more wide and 2 1/2 inches thick. Others are up to 5 inches thick and less than 8 wide. Most are Maple but there are also some Oak. UWEC gift ideas Group was asked to come up with ideas to use up the left over Council Oak to make gifts for UWEC visiting dignitaries. It would have to be small pieces due to the thin pieces of oak left over. Challenge: Turn ideas and bring to club (use whatever scrap material you have) Ron Bartz will lead this effort Grinder For Sale I've got a 6''( 1/3 h.p.) grinder and extra wheel for sale if anyone is interested for $ the stand is from harbor freight and I would let it go for what I payed... the two new saw blades $17.00 for both. I would bring to the next meeting if any interest? Richard Ryan. Call or at ryan_durand@yahoo.com.
