March 2015 Jim Jacobs gave his Taming of the Skew demonstration on Saturday March 7. There were 12 attendees for the introductory lecture period and all 12 went to the club s lathes to put the demonstration into practice. All of these were done by the learnees in varying degrees of success. Jim was very patient and urged all to perfect it if possible one must practice, practice and practice some more.

PREZ SEZ President Rich Thelen accepts Empty Bowls poster from Empty Bowls Coordinator Heather Pearson to add to the other posters from previous years. Over 150 bowls were contributed. Member John Layde gather several better turnings and placed them in a silent action at the Feed My People event. The silent auction items sold for over $ dollars plus $10 for each bowl given to ticket holders. That"s about $3000 for food for the poor. Challenges The March challenge was a big success. Ron Bartz donated the platter that the bowls raced on. There were several heats and Ron Bartz won for longest duration. Congratulations. Mark Palma won for the most beautiful top with his combination of woods and the high polish he put on the top. Congratulations. Social Hour We recently designated the hour between 6 and 7pm on meeting night as Social Hour. So far it seems like a great success as many people are showing up early to catch up with other Woodturners. It was sort of a realization that we were already doing that anyway, so we just formalized it. So, don t worry about coming early. There will be someone to talk with. Plus you can see the show and tell pieces as they arrive and discuss them with the turners who did them. Feed My People This year s donation from members to Feed My People is outstanding. We donated about 150 bowls, expertly made by our Woodturners. They were a big hit with the Empty Bowls people. We also donated many items to the Silent Auction where we earned $2100 for the pantry of Feed My People. The bowls we donated fetched $10 each so quite a lot of money was donated to this great event. A total of 69 wood turned bowls were contributed by 6 members of the CVWG to the 2015 Stepping Stones Empty Bowls event. All 69 bowls, along with a few from last year s event, were adopted by the participants this year. The following CVWG members contributed bowls -Dick Prouty, Ron Bartz, Virgil McClelland, Al Otto, Keith Jones and Dennis Ciesielski. Good job people. You have lot to be proud of.

MARCH DEMONSTRATION Basic Skew Work and Bowl Turning Nuts and Bolts Presented by Bob Eberhardt Bob Eberhardt demonstrated the use of that most hated of tools, the skew, in spindle turning. Bob's most important statement was: Don't ever use a skew for turning bowls, or any other turning where the grain of the wood is not parallel to the ways of the lathe. The forces the skew encounters as it hits the end grain will cause a catch, in addition, because they are held in the handle by only a narrow tang, the tool itself could break sending the razor sharp skew flying. Sharpening the skew: Bob hand grinds the skew using the platform on the slow speed grinder. With the motor off the angle of the platform is adjusted so that grinding wheel makes contact with the cutting edge of the skew. With the motor on he then rotates and slides the skew across the wheel on both sides of the skew. This leaves him with hollow ground edges on either side.the hollow grind allows the edge to be sharpened easily using a diamond board. With a hollow ground the diamond card will only be supported at two points, the very tip, and at the other end of the tip. With a few strokes you can get to an edge you could shave with. The angle to grind your skew at depends on the material you want to cut. Typically a degree angle works well in soft woods, but poorly on hard or splintery woods. A degree angle works best on hard woods, but not as well on soft woods. A 45 degree angle might work adequately on either end of the wood spectrum. Bob sets the tool rest on the lathe somewhat high for skew work. Always ride the bevel, always make support the skew on the tool rest before making contact with the wood. Bob demonstrated a variety of cuts: Planing cut: This cut creates the beautiful finish which skews are known for. Start with the skew against the tool rest, the tool is presented in bevel rubbing mode (the skew is on the wood, but not cutting). The cutting edge of the blade is presented to the wood at less than 45 degrees from perpendicular. The long edge of the skew is above the point of contact. Pay attention to where the skew contacts the wood. If the point of the skew ever makes contact a horrendous catch will result. Typically use the lower 1/4 of the skew. Cove cuts: The skew can only make shallow coves, the wider the skew, the shallower the cove. Tool presentation is similar to a planing cut. The direction of the bevel controls the direction of the cut. Always cut down hill.

V-Groove: The long end of the skew makes the cut in this case. Start by rubbing the bevel, raise the handle during the cut. Do one side at a time. For wider, deeper grooves take multiple cuts. Peeling cut: For hogging wood out, will leave significant tear out. Use the square toe of the skew for the cut. Start by rubbing the bevel, raise the handle to engage the cutting action. Can be used to make tenons but will leave end grain with significant tear out. Slicing Cut: Can be used to clean up tenons created with peeling cuts. Stand the skew on the tool rest, long edge down. Rub the bevel and raise the handle to make the cut. It's helpful to make a small V-groove to prevent wandering. Rolling beads: It's done similar to the planing cut. As you lift the tool handle twist the skew so that the bevel follows an arced path. Don't try and make the bead in one pass, use multiple cuts. Pommel cut: A pommel is where a piece of wood with a square cross section is transitions to a round shape over some distance. The skew is stood on the long edge, lift and twist like for a bead. Take many light passes. The very point makes the cut. Bob also put down the skew and picked up a bowl gouge and gave us some advice on turning bowls. For the best finish always cut downhill. When doing this the wood is always supported as it's being cut to minimize tear out. On the outside of the bowl this is from small diameter to large. On the inside of the bowl it's from large diameter to small. Bob notices that many of us seem to try and come in directly at a square, or off center bowl blank. This is very uncomfortable as the tool keeps getting hit by the oncoming wood. Bob starts off by doing a pull cut from the outside center of the bowl and gradually truing the surface.

Barry Grill showing his urn and demonstrating possible answer to the urn volume needed for it to be used as a cremation urn. Dave Messick with a wax casting Not shown is Bruce Lindholm who had two buffed oiled bowls. Bruce is our photographer.

MARCH PRESIDENT S CHALLENGE DUELING TOPS RACE President Rich Thelen challenged the group to come up with their versions of a racing top. The criteria for entrants was that the tops were no bigger than 3 inches, made of solid wood and have no starting device such as strings and motors. The field of challenge would be a large platter. Three tops would compete at each heat. Last left standing would challenge the next two tops. This would continue until there was only one top left spinning. This event was not sanctioned by NTTRA (National Turned Top Racers Association) and the winner will not go to the national competitions. Start Your Spinning Volunteers Rich Thelen, Keith Jones and John DeRyckere begin the races. However, all tops immediately flopped. It was decided to let the turners of the racing tops spin their own which was more successful. Final Heat Challengers Top Racers Not Qualifying The race is on!!

MARCH SHOW AND TELL Barry Grill displays his Show and Tell items. Barry called this his alien drone. He did this to test his skills with the skew chisel and duplication of turned pieces. This is the Box Elder wood that Steve Schwartz challenged the group on in February Show and Tell and Barry took up the challenge. Barry shows a turned piece of southern pine that he picked up on a trip south. Mark Palma shows his tea candle bowl with a special magenta finish.

MORE MARCH SHOW AND TELL Jeff Fagen made a decorative bird house and was then challenged to turn a real one. This one is made of Red Cedar. Ron Bartz shows a Cherry and Birch plywood segmented bowl (top), a Maple bowl with a Walnut ring (upper left) and a soft Maple bowl (left).

ASK AN EXPERT WOODTURNER Editor Notes: Problems often arise in our woodturning challenges. Where to get an answer? We can ask at the group meetings or a member for an answer or even do a voice call. It would be a group benefit to share the solution to these little annoyances with the rest of the group. Members may have had this problem and have a different solution. Or even if a member has had a problem and solved it and would like to share a solution. The questions below are two of my present annoyances that I m sure someone has a solution. Give it a try. your solution to me at tl9597@charter.net for publication in next months newsletter and discussion at the meetings. Question: The ends of my turned wood pen blanks never seem to be smooth. When finishing, the wood has a tendency to get small dark lines which is particularly noticeable with light woods. What I am I doing wrong? I am using a small carbide bit tool and small skew chisel. Answer:?? Question: When turning a large bowl - whether deep or shallow - the outer edges of the bowl seems out of round and the turning tool tends to chatter creating small gouges in the outer part of the bowl. How can I solve this chatter problem? Answer:?? 12 Board of Directors Meeting March 4, 2015 at 6:00 pm Present: President Rich Thelen Vice President Barry Grill Treasurer Keith Jones Secretary John De Ryckere Education Director Mark Palma Tool Director Tom Schye Newsletter Editor Tom Leonard. Rich Thelen (President) brought the meeting to order. Keith Jones Treasurer's report. End results: Checking $ , Savings $ We are at 100 members, with 67 paid. We will shortly start getting in touch with members who haven't renewed. Rich Thelen Empty bowls - the club donated around 150 bowls. John Layde (with help since he injured his back) ran the silent auction. The silent auction brought in $2100 for our bowls, while the 150ish other bowls brought in 10 dollars each. It's time to renew the AAW insurance, $95.00 for the year. This provides insurance for the club in case of injury. For today s top challenge we will have three awards. 1st and 2nd place in the actual battle bots competition, and a prize for beauty. Spring Fest will be April 24th through 26th. Mark Palma and John De Ryckere are organizing this. Last year we demonstrated in a walled off section, this year we will have at least a 20x20 space and will do a learn to turn. The month of June the wood turners and wood carvers will have a month long exhibit in the Heyde Center. Great exposure for wood as an art medium. Mark Palma is organizing this. So far, for wood turners, Mark Palma, Dennis Ciesielski, Jeff Fagen and Barry Grill are providing pieces. Barry Grill: We interested in doing a fund raiser some time in September or October. $25.00 for a day of demonstrations with Barry Grill. Proceeds would go to the club treasury. Voted and passed. Rich Thelen: June Challenge is collaboration, maybe it should just be embellishment? Meeting was adjurned for membership meeting and demonstrations at 6:45.

Attention Members Treasurer Keith Jones reported in the Board Minutes that we have 100 members but only 67 have paid their dues. If you can t remember whether you have paid your dues, just contact Keith Jones at or at kjones23@charter.net and he will research. We have had members mail their dues and were lost in a snow bank by our mailbox. If you haven t paid your dues, please sent your $25.00 to CVWG at 1125 Starr Ave, Eau Claire, WI or bring them to the next meeting on 4/1/2015. A well funded organization can offer more to its members than an underfunded one. Members not paid as of 5/1/2015 will be dropped from the membership list. For those of you who have decided that the CVWG was not for you or not worth the $25.00 a year we regret that we did not meet your expectations Heyde Center In June, 2015 the CVWG will be jointly participating in a artists showing with the West Wisconsin Woodcarvers at the Heyde Center in Chippewa Falls, WI. This is a new endeavor for the club and all the details are not sorted out at this time. This show is to feature wood art either in a turned or carved form. It is a juried event, which means that anyone who desires to participated needs to submit the following to Mark Palma marksworkshop@gmail.com by the 10 th of March: 1. A two to three paragraph bio discussing yourself and your woodturning (how you got interested, what your specialty may be, or something that talks about your journey behind the lathe); and 2. Two to four (no more please) representative photos of your work. By representative photos they mean work of the type or caliper you plan on showing in the exhibit if chosen. We will assemble this into a slideshow and present it to the Valley Arts Association for their review. We do not know when that will be so I am guessing on the March 10 th date. The chosen artists will be asked to submit up to 3-5 pieces for the show itself. Each chosen piece will need a title and description. You may choose to list your art shown for sale or not for sale, it s up to you. All the chosen art will be described in a program along with your bio. Sometime in June there will be an artist s reception at the Heyde Center. We may or may not also have a Learn to turn event at the Heyde Center this summer, so stay posted for more information.
