2 2 John Boddy Timber Environmental Policy John Boddy Timber Ltd as an organisation, supports the development of credible timber certification schemes, which are based on publicly available forestry standards drawn up in a fully participatory, transparent and objective manner and backed by independent auditing. Where possible, John Boddy purchase timber and wood products from suppliers that have adopted a formal Environmental Purchasing Policy (e.g. the Timber Trade Federations Responsible Purchasing Policy, the WWF s Global Forest and Trade Network) for those products and can provide evidence of commitment to that policy. There is a responsibility on everyone in the timber supply chain, to ensure that the timber products they use are from well managed forests. This responsibility should be discussed at the start of any construction project and communicated all along the supply chain. This encourages architects to work closely with timber companies, who in turn work closely with suppliers. Forests Forever advises the use of a specification clause to be used in contract, that places a condition on the supplier to provide reassurances that the timber and timber products they supply are from well managed forests. Timber suppliers should have a formal environmental policy and be able to provide evidence that they are implementing the terms of their policy. They should also be able to confirm that all timber has that it has been managed according to the laws and producer country. American White Ash * Creamy white to a light brown heartwood with wide white sapwood. Generally straight grained but mainly crown cut with a coarse but even texture. Has a pronounced grain pattern similar to Oak and is often stained as a substitute. illustration 1 illustration 2 illustration 3 European White Beech * illustration 1 European Steamed Beech * illustration 2 European Steamed Red Heart Beech * illustration 3 European White Beech The heartwood is very pale white to pink-brown. Steamed Beech & Steamed Red Heart Beech Steamed to a mellow dark pink colour. The steaming process equalises the colour of the boards and tends to make them easier to work. Bubinga The wood is medium red-brown with lighter red to purple veining. The grain is straight or interlocked. In some logs the grain is very irregular and these are converted by peeling into rotary cut veneers called kevasingo. The texture is moderately coarse but even. Cabbage Bark * Similar in appearance to Padauk with a brown to dark reddish-brown heartwood which is clearly demarcated from the paler white/yellowish sapwood. The heartwood often produces an attractive (variegated/striped) figure. American Cherry The heartwood varies from rich red to reddish-brown, with a contrasting light brown cream sapwood. It has a fine, straight, close grain with narrow brown pith flecks and small gum pockets. It has a fine smooth texture. European Elm The heartwood colour is dull brown, with the annual rings distinct due to large early wood pores, giving a coarse texture to the wood. Tends to be of irregular growth and cross grained. Boards may contain sapwood, this is not classed as a defect. Central American True Mahogany* The timber can be very variable in colour ranging from pale reddish- brown to a deep rich red, with whitish to yellowish sapwood distinct from the heartwood. Dark coloured gum and white deposits can be found in the pores of the timber. The species has very attractive figure, including wavy, mottled, curly, blister and roe figure. A high, golden lustre is characteristic for this species.

American Hard Maple * Cream-white with a reddish tinge. Large trees may have dark brown heart. Usually straight grained but sometimes curly or wavy. Fine brown lines give an attractive growth ring figure on plain sawn surfaces. Texture is fine and even. American Hard Maple Colour No Defect * In this grade colour and defect are part of the grade. Creamwhite with a reddish tinge. Large trees may have dark brown heart. Usually straight grained but sometimes curly or wavy. Fine brown lines give an attractive growth ring figure on plain sawn surfaces. Texture is fine and even. American White Oak * Varies in colour from pale yellow-brown to biscuit with a pinkish tint, similar to European Oak. Straight grain, with the characteristic silver grain on quartered material. European Clear Oak * Light tan to biscuit colour. The overall grade is defect free but may include some small pin and/or sound knots and may have a small amount of sapwood on one face/edge. European Pippy Oak * Light tan to biscuit colour. The boards include patches, clusters or small single pip knots which give the effect of cats paws. The amount of pips can vary from board to board even in the same log. European Character Oak * Light tan to biscuit colour or darker. The overall grade will contain a selection of sound knots, small shakes and splits. May have a small amount of sapwood on one face/edge. Grade will also include sound heartshake. European Antique Oak * illustration 1 European Heavy Character Oak * illustration 2 Light tan to dark biscuit colour. May also include some very dark coloured boards. Antique flooring grade is best described as including all manner of character and size of knots and sap. The grade will also include heart boards. illustration 1 illustration 2

Padauk The heartwood is a vivid blood red, toning down to dark purple-brown with red streaks upon exposure. The grain is straight to interlocked with moderately coarse texture. Pine * The heartwood colour is pale reddish brown, and resinous. The annual rings clearly marked by contrasting light earlywood and darker latewood zones. Selected to include as many sound live knots as possible but a few dead knots may be included. Sycamore * White to creamy-white in colour with a natural lustre. It has a uniform straight grain with a fine close, even texture. American Tulipwood/Poplar * White to biscuit colour with green and brown streaks in most boards. Some small knots permitted. Ideal for a painted application. American Black Walnut * The heartwood is a rich dark brown to purplish-black, with a distinct grey sapwood, mostly straight grained, but with wavy or curly grain occasionally present. The texture is rather coarse. Wenge * The clearly defined heartwood is dark brown with very close, fine, almost black veins. The closely spaced whitish bands of parenchyma give the wood a most attractive appearance. It is fairly straight grained with a coarse texture. Zebrano The heartwood is a light golden-yellow with narrow veining streaks of dark brown to almost black, giving the quartered surfaces a zebra-stripe appearance. The grain is interlocked or wavy and produces alternating hard and soft grained material. Zebrano has a coarse texture and a lustrous surface.
