Custom Wine Cellar Materials Catalog
Creating a custom wine cellar does not happen overnight. Like a fine wine, building your dream cellar takes time. Whether you ve built a collection over decades or are just starting out, you know how you want the cellar to look and feel when you step into it to carefully store that first bottle. As the industry leader in custom wine cellars and storage, we are prepared to offer a thorough education on the wide selection of woods from which we will craft your cellar masterpiece. Whether you favor the unassuming beauty of all heart redwood, the traditional appeal of pine, or the majestic splendor of mahogany, all you need to know is here in our materials catalog. From technical information on the wood itself to vivid images of our stain and finish options, this is the definitive guide to the cellar of your dreams. It all starts here.
The beginning is the most important part of the work. -Plato
Origin of Materials When a customer makes the decision to purchase a custom wine cellar, they ultimately want only the best that is offered. Here we offer a broad spectrum of woods in a variety of colors, grain patterns, and finishes to accommodate our customers tastes and needs. Customers with a wide variety of tastes and needs overwhelmingly make the same selection of material: redwood. Raised in the cool, damp forests of Northern California, redwood is the perfect choice for a custom wine cellar. It is naturally resistant to the cool, humid atmosphere desired for long-term wine storage. It requires no finish or sealant, and over time darkens to a lustrous cinnamon color. As a pioneer in the industry we have always insisted on intervention for the regulation and sustainability of the material by others in the industry. 4 Great lengths are taken to ensure that the redwood we use is from sustainable forestry programs. These programs protect existing forests and help to cultivate future growth. According to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, more than 650 million new trees are planted each year in the United States by program participants. In addition to SFI-certified redwood, Forest Stewardship Council-certified redwood is offered as an alternative. Both groups are subject to third-party certification, so our customers can be confident that purchasing a redwood custom wine cellar is an environmentally conscious decision.
C aliforni Redwood A Environmentally Sound Decision There are 1.74 million acres of Coastal Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) forests on California s north coast. About 26 percent, or 450,000 acres of these forests are preserved in national, state and municipal parks, national monuments and other administratively withdrawn lands where harvesting is prohibited. Of the remaining 1.29 million acres where harvesting can take place, approximately 1.03 million acres (80 percent) are currently being well managed according to independent third-party certification programs. Forest certification provides consumers with assurance that the redwood products they purchase have been harvested in an environmentally sound manner. The basic tenets of certification programs include: sustainable forestry prompt reforestation protection of water quality enhancement of wildlife habitat minimizing the visual impact of harvesting protection of unique sites improvements in wood utilization Ageless Beauty One of the most coveted qualities of redwood is the ability to withstand the test of time. Unlike other materials that discolor over time and require constant sanding and refinishing, redwood has the unique characteristic of becoming more attractive as it ages. When the cellar is first installed the wood has a soft, pale red hue and overtime changes to a cinnamon color. All-Heart Redwood comes from the center of the tree and is characterized by a deep, cinnamon color and a dramatic grain pattern. Natural Finish Wood of Choice for WINE Storage Redwood has the least volumetric shrinkage of any commercial domestic wood; therefore, it can be subjected to considerably more change in moisture before it has the same change in dimensions as other commercial species. This means that projects manufactured with redwood will be much less subject to open joints, warping, cupping, splitting and other defects associated with dimensional change. Redwood heartwood has grown-in resistance to decay and insects that is present throughout the lumber, not just on the surface. The wood exposed through sawing, boring or nailing is as decay-resistant as the surface. Redwood has an open-celled structure and contains little or no pitch or resins. This enables redwood to absorb and retain all types of finishes extremely well. Performance is more than durability. Redwood has qualities not found in other woods. Redwood performance characteristics include resistance to shrinking, warping and checking in addition to durability. This means redwood projects age beautifully. 5
Vocabulary of Stains : Natural wood without stain or lacquer. Certain unstained woods develop a natural luster over time. Light Danish Stain: A light golden stain which accentuates the tones and grains of all woods. This stain develops best on lighter-colored woods. Classic Mahogany Stain: Rich, reddish-brown stain that gives the wood a dramatic finish. It also shows off its natural wood grain and inherent personality. Dark Walnut Stain: Deep golden-brown stain. This stain deepens almost all shades of wood. Midnight Black Stain: Jet-black stain. A dramatic departure from traditional woodworking finishes with a contemporary appeal. Dusty Weathered Finish: A unique process to make the wood appear weathered and timeworn. A custom topcoat is applied to achieve a light grayish-brown that lets some of the unstained wood show through. Dark Weathered Finish: Same process as dusty weathered finish above, but a darker topcoat is applied for a more dramatic effect. This finish is unmatched by others and allows each project to be highly unique. Distressed Finish: To achieve this finish, the wood is put through a specially designed process to create a rustic look. Afterwards, a special stain and three coats of lacquer are applied to bring out these markings, making each piece a custom creation. This finish is popular in traditional-style homes and accentuates rustic decor elements. Whitewash Finish: The whitewash finish is one of our newer selections and gives a whitish cast to the wood. Whitewash is a versatile finish that complements the clean, open themes of modern décor as well as the seaside appeal of old New England. Lacquer Finish: Multiple applications of a clear coat sealant with intricate hand-sanding treatments between finishes. Lacquer gives the racks a smooth, gleaming finish and an elegant ambience. 6
Stains & Grains The examples below illustrate the variety of grain patterns in wood. Each displays a variation of grain beginning with a more relaxed, expanded grain on the far left and gradually working across the spectrum ending with a tightly packed, compact grain example on the far right. Grain patterns sometimes give wood a dramatic appearance, and adding different stains will accentuate these grain patterns to varying degrees. Expanded Moderate Compact Each tree has its own distinct grain. As a result, we offer woods with a variety of different patterns. Most woods offered feature a fairly straight grain. A few varieties feature curly or wavy grain. Appearances vary based on types of wood. Grain types can determine how a piece of wood is milled. We are experienced in working with woods of all different grain patterns. Many of the stains we offer accentuate and highlight grain patterns and are especially distinctive if a grain pattern is unique or atypical. A partial list of common grain patterns are: Straight Wavy Curly Irregular Fiddleback Birds-eye 7
Wood Properties While all of our wood sources are structurally acceptable for a wine cellar, some applications call for a specific wood type. Here we present and explain technical data for the types of wood we offer. Ft. Reference: Moisture content: Weight of moisture in a piece of wood shown as a percentage of its oven dry weight. Specific Gravity: Ratio of density of wood to that of water. Modulus of Rupture: The maximum load-bearing capacity of a wood in bending and proportional to maximum movement borne by a specimen. Modulus of Elasticity: A measurement designed to show the ability of a wood to recover from deformations produced by low stress once the loads are removed. Compression parallel to grain: Maximum measurement of stress that a parallel-tograin specimen (with a ratio of length to least dimension less than 11) of wood is able to withstand. Shear Parallel to Grain: Wood s ability to resist slipping of one internal part upon another part along the grain. Density: Weight of the wood per cubic foot. Determines the strength of the wood, varies depending on species. 8
Common Wood & Racking Terminology Premium Redwood Premium Redwood: Wood that comes from the sapwood of the redwood tree. The sapwood surrounds the heartwood. This wood is generally more varied in color than heartwood. All Heart Redwood All Heart (Redwood): Wood that comes from the center of the redwood tree. Also found in other types of wood. Plain Sawn: Lumber that is sawed parallel to the annual growth rings. This practice makes the wood visually appealing, easier to produce from a log, and gives it a varied grain appearance. Most lumber is plain sawn. This is our standard offering. Plain Sawn Quarter Sawn Quarter Sawn: Lumber that is sawed perpendicular to the annual growth rings. This method is sometimes requested in hardwoods because it shows off grain patterns. Material costs are higher for woods sawn in this technique, but it is available upon request. Vertical Grain: Annual growth rings run vertical to the face of a cut board. Redwood cellars will have a mixture of flat and vertical grain. Vertical Grain Flat Grain Flat Grain: Annual rings run almost parallel to the face of a cut board. Hardwood cellars have a higher percentage of flat grain with the exception of butcher block tabletops and doors in which case the exposed surfaces are always vertical grain for integrity. Finger-Jointed: A method of joining pieces of lumber end-to-end. The end of each piece is sawn into a set of projecting fingers that interlock. WE DO NOT OFFER THIS! Finger-Jointed Edge-Glued Edge-Glued: The process of joining two pieces of wood without the use of locking shapes (as seen in the finger-joint). This process is done by pressing the straight edge of a board against another and applying a thin layer of glue between them for adhesion to ultimately create a larger piece of wood from smaller sections. Spacer Bar Spacer Bar: Our specially developed component used to tie together many types of racking styles. The dado notches slip snugly over vertical posts to create a stable and attractive interlock. SB Rail: Used at all locations where a spacer bar will be placed. It is square-cut and recessed to create a snug fit. Beveled Rail: Aesthetically pleasing and helps keep label tearing to a minimum. Molding Rail: Flush mounted to front of rack for zero gap when molding is applied. 9
Table Tops The photos below demonstrate edging options on various tabletop offerings. Rather than having a separately attached nose edging, our platinum tabletop has a routed nosing that is cut into the solid tabletop itself, creating a seamless profile. Platinum Tabletop- Created by gluing pieces of 1x2 material together on the face. Gold Tabletop- Created by gluing 1x2 pieces together on their side. Nosing is separately attached. Plywood Tabletop- Veneer plywood selected to match cellar racking. Nosing is separately attached if requested. A custom tabletop that is created in this glued-up fashion will show a variety of grains within the same piece of tabletop. The direction in which the tabletop grain is oriented depends on the length and width of the required tabletop. Some are created so that the 1x2 pieces (and therefore the grains) run parallel to the wall of racking. Others are created so that the grain runs perpendicular to the wall of racking to which it is attached. Tabletops will always have grain orientation mandated by engineering constraints first, so direction is not selectable. Examples are shown in the surrounding photos. When a stain is added to our custom tabletops, it gives the wood a rich finish. The stain may also bring out the individual grain patterns of the wood. Tabletops are created from many different pieces of wood in a butcher-block fashion and adding a stain will enhance the gain pattern even more. This is a highly desirable feature that increases the individuality of the custom tabletop. Adding a lacquer to the tabletop will add a furniture-quality sheen to the wood. It will also help seal and protect it. 10
