Eucalyptus Plantation Mosaic Lyptus hardwood products are an excellent option when selecting an exotic species grown to sustainable forest certification standards. Offering all the benefits expected of a tropical hardwood, Lyptus hardwood is ideal for cabinetry, millwork, furniture and flooring applications. The eucalyptus plantations supplying the lumber mill are owned and managed by Aracruz, our joint venture partner in the Aracruz Produtos de Madeira (APM) S.A. mill. The plantations are a mosaic of eucalyptus and native forest, which were previously agricultural and grazing lands. Over 25% of these plantations are managed as permanent native forest where sensitive slopes and areas near water are maintained in natural habitat. Original species native to the area over 100 years ago have been reintroduced into this ecosystem. The Aracruz plantations are certified to Brazil s national sustainable forestry standard, Cerflor. This standard has been endorsed by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), a Europeanbased international organization that endorses credible sustainable forestry programs. To compliment the certified Aracruz forests, the APM mill has Chain of Custody (CoC) certification for both the Cerflor and PEFC certifications. Eucalyptus trees grow quickly and may be harvested within years of planting. Lyptus forests are 11 times more productive on a per hectare per-year basis when compared to a temperate forest, which may take 80 to 100 years or more to mature. Lyptus forests also produce 30 times the volume of lumber per hectare per year when compared to an unmanaged temperate forest. Like Weyerhaeuser mills in the United States, the APM mill uses virtually every portion of the log, converting it not only to lumber and byproducts but using residuals as bioenergy for the kiln-drying operations.

Lyptus Lumber Characteristics and Benefits In terms of density, strength and other technical properties, Lyptus lumber compares favorably with hard maple. In appearance, it rivals cherry and mahogany and has a straight, even, and moderately coarse grain. Because plantation trees are manually pruned during their growing years, logs coming into the mill are more uniform and have fewer knots than those that grow naturally. This results in a high conversion rate of logs to clear lumber. Good working qualities Is well suited for a wide variety of interior applications. Has good machining and turning properties. Glues and holds fasteners well. Sands to a smooth, semi-polished surface. Lyptus lumber absorbs a variety of stains evenly, from oil- to water-based finishes. Sorted for color & density Lyptus lumber varies in color from red to light pink. The heartwood is a medium pink and the sapwood is paler. It has a large heartwood core. Its density varies with darker colors similar to hickory in density and the lighter color similar to birch and ash in density.

4 The benefit of color sorting provides manufacturers more consistent color as well as density. The darker color sort is denser, and ideal for hardwood flooring. Pink color sort is relatively less dense, and works well for cabinets and furniture. Available in NHLA grades as well as our own proprietary grades, both are color sorted. 4/4 (23.8 mm) and 5/4 (32 mm) thicknesses with limited availability of 6/4 (36.5 mm) and 8/4 (49.2 mm). 7 When B nai Shalom in West Orange, N.J., recently renovated their synagogue, they wanted to take a responsible, respectable approach to architectural design and decided selecting Lyptus hardwood would be a perfect fit. Lyptus Lumber Technical Guidelines As with all wood, Lyptus hardwood lumber may have natural variations in grain and color, surface imperfections, slight warping or shrinking that can be corrected or minimized with appropriate processing, milling and finishing techniques. The following are intended as recommendations. Technical Recommendations Chopping (Cross Cutting) Use saws with at least 32 carbide teeth. For best results, use 60-tooth saws with a saw axis rotation of 3,500 RPM to cut the wood without bending the fibers. The cutting angle for medium- and high-density wood should be 0º to 10º. If surfaces show signs of burning after cutting, check for a dull blade, saw misalignment or insufficient feed rate. Feed rate should be slower for parts with reverse grain. For a smoother cut, keep the feed rate constant. Avoid jerking movements when using manual equipment. Ripping Use saws with at least 48 hardened metal teeth, a cutting width of no more than.125 inches and saw axis rotation of 3,500 RPM. The cutting angle for medium- and high-density wood should be 15º to 20º. Using a rotation of less than 3,500 RPM may result in bent fibers or burning adversely affecting subsequent operations, such as edge gluing. If cutting edges appear burned, check saw alignment. Planing Use high-speed steel, or ideally carbide tools with four or more blades, at 6,000 RPM. Use a 20- to 25-ft/min. feed rate and cutting depth of no more than.04 inches. The cutting angle should be 25º for optimal performance. A sharp tool is essential to ensure planing quality. If fuzzing occurs, sharpen blades.

8 Gluing Lyptus hardwood is considered an easy species to glue with no special requirements needed. There are several types of adhesives on the market designed for different uses that meet various environmental requirements. Important factors for proper gluing: Wood moisture content for gluing should not exceed 12%, with the ideal moisture content ranging from 6% to 8%. Depending on the temperature, a relative humidity of 30% to 40% will help maintain wood moisture content of 6% to 8%. Atmospheric and press temperatures below the minimum cure temperature may cause improper curing, resulting in a weak glue joint. Distance between clamps should be no greater than 8-12 inches apart. Finishing A sanding sealer is recommended prior to finishing. Sanding Feed rate of no more than 18- to 25-ft/min. is recommended. Use shallow sanding depths of no more than.01 inches as burning may occur at.02 inches. Replace sand paper frequently. Always sand in the direction of the grain to produce a good surface finish. Do not sand a wood surface that is to be glued. Careful preparation of the surface will result in a better quality finish and will reduce the absorption of sealants, primers, varnish and paint. Shaping / Molding Follow the direction of the wood grain. Use carbide tools running at no less than 6,000 RPM, with a maximum feed rate of 40- to 50-ft./min. Rotation rates of less than 4500 RPM result in burning. Cutting angles should be 14º to 18º. Keep machinery well-lubricated. For smoother edges, start cutting on the end of the board (the side that is perpendicular to the fibers) and finish on the longitudinal side (the side that parallels the fibers). Drilling / Boring Use carbide or high-speed steel drills with a rotation of 600 RPM, at slow feed rates. At faster spindle speeds, burning may occur. The diameter of the holes should not exceed 1/3 the thickness of the board. Applying Staples, Nails and Screws Do not align staples, nails or screws in the same grainline; this could cause splits. Nails should be located no closer than 2.75 inches from the edge of the pieces. They can be hammered in manually or with pneumatic pistols, using a working pressure between 80 and 120 psi. Lyptus hardwood resists splitting as well or better than true mahogany. Showplace Wood

The number itself is the ratio of the woods density compared to that of water (1.0). The larger the value, the more dense the wood. Dimensional Movement (Shrinkage): Wood products shrink and swell as they absorb or lose moisture. Dimensional movement is expressed as a percent of that change. Hardness (Janka Ball test): The value is the force required to embed a inchdiameter steel ball to one-half its diameter into the radial and tangential surfaces of solid wood. The higher the value, the harder the lumber. Compression Parallel: Commonly called crushing strength. The larger the number, the greater the lumbers ability is to withstand force applied to a column. Bending Strength (MOR): The maximum load-carrying capacity in bending. The larger the number, the higher the load the lumber can support before failing. Bending Stiffness (MOE): Bending stiffness or elasticity is a description of deformation under load or stress. The larger the number, the less deformation the lumber will have under load.
