2 SAUNA WOOD PROCESSING Our wood is processed specifically for sauna use. From forest to mill each log is selected for the end product. The wood is dried for over 80 days to achieve a dryness of between 6-11% moisture content; this process stabilizes the wood fiber and prevents cell collapse in the lumber. By curing the wood to these properties it reduces the risk of warping and splitting in extreme sauna environments. 2

Choosing the right wood for sauna use- The wood should be a soft wood that can breathe and is resin free. Soft woods will stay cooler to the touch and not heat-up to unbearable temperatures. Western Red Cedar is probably the most popular in North America, with it s famous aromatic scent. Hemlock wood is non-allergenic, meaning that it has little or no aromatic smell to irritate certain respiratory conditions. Never use pine. It s resin will seep out and become sticky. Nordic Spruce is popular in Scandinavia and has a unique rustic look. NEVER USE SEALANTS The general rule is to never apply coatings or varnish to sauna woods. The chemicals used in wood sealants will break down in the heat and off gas toxins in the sauna. Also most importantly the sauna wood needs to breathe, by slowly absorbing the sauna heat and humidity and releasing it when the sauna is cooling off. The only exception to this rule is that you apply a thin coat on door handles and wood flooring. There is also a paraffin wax coating available for bench tops to help keep them clean. However, we recommend leaving the wood in its natural state. Wood swatches and photography that are represented in this catalog have been provided to give you a visual representation of the wood options available through our organization. However, due to variations in color printing settings, and lighting sources, we cannot guarantee that your sauna will be an exact match to the colors represented in these photo s. We would also like to explain that in certain wood species, the color changes as it ages over time. For example, most cuts of cedar gain a richer color as it ages. Coloring also varies throughout any given cut of wood grade, providing a broad range of shading and color density. We would like to also point out that there will be a variation that one can expect from a single sample of material, compared to the thousands of varying pieces that will be utilized in the final construction of your sauna. 3

4 WOOD SPECIES Redwood Scientific Name: Sequoia sempervirens The Redwood trees of California are one of the most dimensionally stable of the western softwoods, redwood is not prone to checking and splitting, and therefore Redwood is most often used for applications where high moisture levels are a problem for other types of wood. It is also specified for its exquisite coloring. It is superior in insulation values. The minute cell structure with thousands of air-filled cavities accounts for Redwood s thermal insulation values. Clear All Heart Vertical Grain- Is the finest grade of Redwood. It is all heartwood and the graded face of each piece is free of knots. Clear All Heart Flat Grain and Clear grades available also. Hemlock Scientific Name: Tsuga heterophylla West Coast hemlock, Pacific hemlock, and British Columbia hemlock Hemlock has a reputation for excellence in form and function. The kiln or air-dried wood is very stable with little tendency to cup, check or twist.. This combination of stability and smoothness has also made Hemlock a favorite wood for the construction of saunas. The overall uniformity of coloring from heartwood to sapwood, from white sand to light honey makes this a favorite wood with designers. Premium Vertical Grain -This is the highest quality grade available. Lower Grades are available in large quantities of 1,000 Board Feet or more. Western Red Cedar Scientific Name: Thuja plicata Western Red Cedar is renowned for its high impermeability to liquids and its natural phenol preservatives, which make it ideally suited for sauna use where humidity is high. The cellular composition of cedar provides a high degree of thermal insulation, approx. 1 R/inch. Old Growth Western Red Cedars slow growth, dense fiber and natural oily extracts are responsible for its rich coloring, which ranges from a light milky straw color in the sapwood to a rich chocolate in the heartwood. Clear Premium Vertical grain - Grade A-clear grade with mixed grain STK-Select tight knot. 4

5 Abachi Scientific Name: Triplochiton scleroxylon Abachi is a low thermal retention wood making it ideal for sauna benches and back rails. Abachi has excellent thermal properties (when temperatures in the sauna are F, the temperature of the Abachi Bench surface is about 100 F). Beautiful, clear, even light colored, and a standard of excellence in Europe. Nordic Spruce Scientific Name: Picea abies Slow growing durable timber known for its high quality and durability when exposed to varied temperatures. Widely used in Scandinavia for sauna use. It s best to use vertical grain wood in a sauna, especially for the bench tops. Multi-grain wood can lift the sauna environment and should be sanded smooth to ensure a comfortable setting. Considerations when ordering custom profiles Custom orders require additional planning time and exact lengths may not always be available.
