1 Appendix: ENGINEERED WOOD Plywood Specifications - How It s Made Plywood essentially is a panel of wood made from veneers, or thin sheets, layered in three or more layers, usually with each layer at right angles to adjoining layers. It is manufactured by peeling away a continuous sheet of wood from a log, much like pulling a paper towel from a roll. After the sheet is dried and cut to size, defects are cut out and patched. Next, the thin sheets are sprayed with glue and sandwiched into layers. Those layers are sent through a hot press and bonded under heat and pressure. The middle layers may be wood veneers, or a composite material, depending on the type of panel being manufactured. Finally, the panels are trimmed to size, graded and sent on to further manufacturing, which may include sanding, resawing or grooving. Engineered Beams - Storage and Handling Often come from the mill protected with sealants, primers or wrappings. After trimming the beam, reseal the ends. A primer coat provides a paintable surface. A penetrating sealant prepares the beam for staining. Store glulam under cover to protect from rain and sunlight. Store on lumber bunks off the ground. Ground should be level and well-drained. If beams are wrapped, cut drainage holes in bottom of wrapping. Stack, store and handle so the webs of the joists are vertical. Keep joists level. Store off the ground. Protect from weather. Pick the bundles using a spreader bar. Do not apply loads to the joists or twist them when they are horizontal. Discard damaged I-joists. Do not apply loads to the joist until is it fully installed with bracing and sheathing. Panel onstruction When builders come into your store looking for plywood, here is more information that will help you understand the work they are doing. Double-floor construction is rough subflooring laid over the floor frame. Builders usually use DX plywood or OSB, typically 1/2, 5/8 or 3/4. Underlayment is laid over the rough subflooring to provide a smooth surface. Builders commonly use.215 underlayment-grade hardboard, 1/4 lauan plywood or 5/16, 3/8 or 5/8 particleboard. Single-layer floor construction is a tongue-and-groove panel that serves as both a subfloor and underlayment. Builders usually use 19/32 to 3/4 over 24 on-center joists. They may also use 1-1/8 plywood over 4 beams 48 on-center. orners of buildings have sufficient bracing to strengthen the structure. If builders don t use plywood to strengthen corners, they may use a steel strap or a T-shaped metal brace. Once the wall bracing is in place, they can sheath the wall in insulating foam panels, which have no structural strength. When wood panel siding is used, it acts as a wall bracing and finish material together. Since many builders frame roofs so that the rafters or trusses are 24 on-center, they use 1/2 sheathing. Follow the guidelines on the grade stamp when selling sheathing. Be conservative and if the rafter spacing is too close to the limit, sell the next thicker panel. NOTE: Always consult your local and provincial codes 1
