1 BULLSHOOTER The Official Bulletin of The Freeport Little Club August 2016 Volume 16 No.8 Presidents Message H.G. Stafford Editor My thanks go out to the Food & Beverage team of the Freeport Little Club. Executive Chef's Rob and Ed, Executive Pastry Chef Anna, Director of Beverage Mr. Goldman. Well done! Thanks to all attendees and all the birthday wishes. Same time next month for our next meeting. If anyone would like to step up to help, we are short 1 Grill Master. Let me know if you are interested. itargets What You Get and How It Works A complete itarget system consists of three parts - A Laser Bullet, the itarget App and the itarget Sled. It works with your actual firearm. The itarget Sled The itarget sled holds the shooting target and your phone in such a way that the phone's camera has a clear full screen view of the target. The sled adjusts to grip any size phone. The target distance is adjustable to compensate for different phone cameras. You adjust the sled to fill the Phone's display with the image of the target. The sled comes with three different shooting targets, one for each of the upcoming apps. Careful research has gone into the creation of these targets. A specialized dual paper combination optimizes how the laser light is dispersed when it hits the target. This is what enables itarget to work in well lit situations, even outdoors. You can also print out any image you'd like on standard 8.5" x 11" paper and use it for target practice with good results. The Laser Bullet The itarget Laser Bullet is shaped like a real bullet and is inserted into the chamber of the gun. The snap-cap style design does not damage the weapon. The Laser Bullets are rimless, so they are not ejected by the gun after each shot. When the trigger is pulled, the firing pin strikes the back of the Laser Bullet, causing it to fire a laser beam at the target. The itarget Laser Bullets are currently available in 9mm ACP - 38 Special -.40 S&W -.45 ACP and.223 We may have more caliber choices to offer before shipping them. BULLSEYE allows you to shoot an unlimited number of shots at a standard scoring target. It keeps track of the total score while showing you clearly were each shot hit. It also counts the number of shots fired and lets you enter the distance you are shooting from. If you shoot well and want to share with your friends, you can save the results to your phone's camera roll. Saving to your camera roll will also unlock a ranking based on your performance. This
2 app and it's functionality is seen in the demonstration video for this campaign. QUICK DRAW is meant to test your speed as well as your accuracy. Once the game starts, the App will wait a random number of seconds before it says "DRAW!" Once the command to draw is given, a timer starts counting to measure how fast you can react and shoot the target. Each shot is displayed on the phone's screen, with your reaction time directly under it. The game ends after 10 shots are fired. You can also save your fastest times to your phone's camera roll. HI SCORE is a challenge that will push your limits of consistent shooting skill. The target consists of 5 numbered circles. The app will call out a number, and you have 2 seconds to hit that circle. Each hit adds 1 point to your score. One miss and it's game over. The challenge is to see how high you can go before you miss. Like the other apps, you can save your final score to the camera roll. With all of these Apps, one very cool feature is the ability to use Airplay and Apple TV to see your phone's screen live on your TV as you shoot. Recruiting New Members Recruiting new shooters and new competitors is important for all the shooting disciplines it should be one of the significant goals of every club. And once we have them, it s just as important to continue to help and encourage those newbies who need it. To succeed, we must acknowledge that nearly everyone has getting-started jitters and we must apply some very practical and effective solutions, not merely a slap on the back.do you remember your own nervousness at your very first match? One major source of first-timer intimidation is the desire to not look incompetent in front of other shooters, like dressing informally and arriving to discover it s a formal affair. Here are some on-the-ground suggestions I recently gave to a newbie interested in our Simon 900, a match created with the intent to get newbies out to the range. The comments about equipment are necessarily specific to bullseye; other shooting disciplines require other gear, of course. Apply the concept of minimum equipment as you think best for your specific discipline. Go with a friend This may be the best suggestion for anyone competing in their first match, regardless of the shooting discipline. As with any undertaking, including a friend really ups the fun factor. Match directors understand this and are always happy to squad friends together on the same shooting point. View and preview If possible, go to the range for some handson with your shooting buddy on a day when the range isn t busy. It s easier to communicate and focus without the frequent, loud distractions and interruptions of a busy range day. Target shooting isn t much of a spectator sport. However, being prepared for your first match will allay much of your apprehension, so attend a match just to watch and take notes. You may feel less pressure if you make your first competition an club match or league match. Ask questions, but not of the guy who s setting up on the firing line he wants to focus on his preparation and shooting. Pay attention to the courses of fire, where the new targets are, listen to the range commands and watch how the shooters respond there s comfort in knowing what to expect. The first time you compete, ask to be placed on the second relay, for the same reason: time to observe others so that you can respond appropriately. To preview range commands and responses beforehand, get a
5 copy of the rule book for your chosen discipline from the NRA or CMP. Bring what you need Dedicated competitors tend to bring lots of gear to make their game easier and more enjoyable and sometimes just more comfortable. A newbie can be overwhelmed thinking he needs all that stuff, but much of it isn t really necessary to shoot. The bare-bones necessities for shooting bullseye are a pistol, ammo, eye/ear protection stapler, staples, and pencil. After those, the minimum really should haves are something to lay your pistol on and binoculars or spotting scope. The former could be a simple section of carpeting. You ll want the binoculars or scope to see bullet impacts when firing slow fire shots, and a camera bag or backpack keeps everything together. Avoid all dumb mistakes Reality check: at most matches someone makes a dumb mistake, and every long-time competitor has made one. Dumb mistakes are exemplified in forgetting to bring ammo, magazines or another important piece of gear. Cross-firing onto the wrong target seems to occur at least once. You will make a dumb mistake. As long as it isn t a safety violation, no reasonable person will think a newbie is incompetent. Rather, any dumb mistake will likely be a source of mild amusement and the silent reflection, Geez, I remember when I did that Be reasonable Something I say to disappointed or frustrated new shooters is, Have reasonable expectations of yourself and your equipment or else it isn t fun. Expect plenty of shots to land out in the white rings at first. After a few matches set a goal to just keep all your shots in the black scoring rings when you achieve that you are becoming someone to beat. Competition isn t combat and it isn t lifesaving, so in the final analysis there really isn t much to stress about; separate your purpose simply to shoot from your overall goal to have fun and you will keep your enjoyment in the game no matter what your score.
