3 Introduction This expansion is one of our series developed specifically for distribution via Steam Marketplace and builds on our range of independently distributed rolling stock packs.the expansion tells a part of the complex story of the British Railways 21t coal hoppers. This story is further developed by some of the other expansion packs in our catalogue. This pack features the British Railways standard unbraked 21t Coal Hopper with the original design of hopper body, braking and running gear.the hoppers are all painted in unfitted grey with clean and weathered versions which are further enhanced by loaded and empty versions of each with suitably modified physics to match the load state and a selection of different lettering styles. The Rolling Stock The building of 21t hoppers by British Railways for coal continued on from LNER designs. After building 2 diagrams (1/141 and 1/143) covering just under 4,000 vehicles that were barely distinguishable from LNER built wagons in 1949 and 1950, none were included in the 1951 building program. In 1952 new construction resumed, this time to the new diagram, 1/146. There were minor differences in the dimensions of the body compared to the previous diagrams, but the most noticeable change was much heavier duty side bracing to the body. At the same time the chassis received some updates. Heavier duty W-irons were provided to hold the plain bearing axle boxes, the brakes were of the Morton type with a single brake shoe applying to each wheel and the hand brake was of the standard BR type length. These wagons became the standard BR design with just under 17,000 examples built between 1952 and 1959, with 11 contractors and Shildon Works contributing 26 different lots. Over the building period, there were naturally some changes. The 1955 Modernisation Plan also had an effect, with some of the later lots fitted with roller bearing axle boxes and the fitting of vacuum brake equipment. There was a change to a lighter style of end bracing in some of the later builds to provide better placement of the vacuum cylinder, though sometimes not all elements of the automatic brake were in place at the time of building. The wagons in this pack represent the bulk of this diagram in original unfitted condition with plain bearing axle boxes and the earlier type of end bracing. This dia 1/146 21t hopper is in the condition that many of us remember with a heavily corroded body with a few traces of unfitted grey paint left. This hopper has HOP 21 branding in a full sized data panel.

5 This is a very heavily weathered dia 1/146 unfitted 21t coal hopper that was allegedly painted in unfitted grey livery.the hopper carries the HTO TOPS code in a full size data panel. Rolling Stock Features We have developed some new features which are being introduced as appropriate with our range of Marketplace expansions. Although they will happily work away and help to enhance your Train Simulator experience with no specific input some are still controllable via the scenario editor if you so wish. Random Data Panels Throughout their working life the HTOs gained a selection of different coding styles.we have enabled four different versions of these coding styles based on the most likely period of use for each variation of the hopper to be randomly applied to hoppers when they are placed in game. However, should scenario authors want more control in the lettering displayed this is possible by adding an alphabetical prefix to the wagon number via the scenario editor. Examples of four different versions (complete with the override prefix digit and subsequent vehicle number) applied to one variation of the hoppers are: Override prefix a : ab Override prefix b : bb419967

6 Override prefix c : cb Override prefix d : db Random Load Profiles As the loading of wagons is not a process that generally creates identical shaped heaps we have enabled a random feature that applies a number of different shaped loads wagons as they are placed in the editor. File Naming File Naming Overview We have developed a naming structure for our rolling stock based around the following mask: TOPS (Vehicle Type): LIVERY FLAGS For example one van may be named HTO 21t Hopper - Dia 146: W2.E This means it s a HTO with the second variation of weathered texture, and empty physics. Note: In the case of the HTO hoppers the LIVERY tag isn t used as they are all finished in unfitted grey livery. File name options The following is a list of the variable flags used in this pack: TOPS: HTO 21t unfitted braked coal hopper FLAGS: C1 Clean Textures - variation 1 C2 Clean Textures - variation 2 E Empty physics L Loaded physics with random shape load plane displayed W1 Weathered Textures - variation 1 W2 Weathered Textures - variation 2 Compromises With any project you always have to make some compromises and this one has been no exception. We re not ashamed of the ones we ve made and more than happy to tell you about them. Liveries With any wide ranging fleet of wagons there are always going to be variations brought about by development experiments and operational changes. Bearing this in mind with the rolling stock we have supplied all the numbers used on vehicles as individuals were hard to pin down and no doubt changed throughout their operational lives. The liveries applied are again a best fit as every picture shows a variation and the random lettering enabled on the models will help to create some of this variation.
