1 Greetings, and thank you for purchasing a center stand for your V-Strom from Murphs! We strive to provide quality products at a fair price, and hope you agree we do it well. Whether you purchased a stand for the 1000 or the 650, the instructions for installation are the same. There is a slight difference in the angle of the cross support piece between the two versions. For this reason, you may notice the stand shown in the pictures appears to be slightly different than the one you received. Please read the instructions thoroughly before starting. Once you have all tools and supplies in place, the installation can be accomplished in about 45 minutes. You should have received the following contents in the package:
2 The list includes: 2 M8 bolts, 1 35mm long and 1 45mm 2 M10 bolts 35mm long 2 M10 bolts 45mm long Bushings for the pivot point, 2 different sizes 2 Springs 2 Mounting Brackets 1 Peg Feeler 1 or 2 cushions, dependent on whether you have the 650 or 1000 You re obviously going to need a few tools, and these include a 10, 12 and 14mm wrench. A torque wrench with sockets in those sizes will also be necessary to do the job properly. You ll need some of your favorite bearing grease also. Last but not least, a brake spring tool will make installing the springs easier and less frustrating than perhaps some other methods. A picture of one is shown below. You can find one of these at just about any auto parts store for around $10. To get started, park your bike on a level spot. Leave it in first gear so it is less likely to roll off while you re installing the center stand. You may want to lay a cloth or piece of cardboard on the ground to prevent nicking or scratching the stand during installation.
3 The bracket mounting points are just forward of the bottom of the shock, about midpoint on the suspension arm and slightly above it. There are 3 threaded holes on each side that match up with the holes in the mounting brackets. Take a good look at these threaded holes to make sure they are clear of debris. If there is any doubt, take the time to clean them up as best you can, perhaps run a tap through them if necessary. Install the mounting brackets with 2 bolts initially, as shown in the picture below. This shot is of the right side bracket, which has the spring hook attach point. The 35mm bolts are used on the left side, leaving the 45mm for the right. The M8 bolts are used in the upper holes. Do not fully tighten them, leave them loose for now. You will need some play in them in order to slip the stand into place. Now we can insert the bushings into the stand in preparation for installation of the stand itself to the bike. The bushings slide into the mounting points right above where they are laying next to the stand in the first picture. It should be apparent from the difference in size which one goes to which side, and it is important to note they need to be inserted from the inside of the stand, not from the outside. Prior to inserting the bushings, smear a layer of grease around the outside of them. For good measure, poke a little grease in the hole where the bushings sit with your finger. Also, smear a layer around the
4 inside and outside edges of the mounting points on the stand, which are the surfaces that will be in contact with the mounting brackets and the bike frame. This is also where the stand pivots, of course. Now simply lift the stand into place, lining the holes up with the third hole in the brackets. It is at this point you will be happy you left the first two bolts slightly loose. Once you get all the bolts hand tight, torque them properly to 16.5 lb-ft for the M8 s, and 36.0 lb-ft for the M10 s. When you ve done this, you should be at the stage shown in the next picture. Before you proceed any further, install the bumper(s) onto the exhaust pipe as shown in the following picture on a 650. As you can see, the picture also shows the installation of the springs in process.
5 Prior to installing the springs, smear a dab of grease on each of the spring hooking points, on the bracket and on the cross arm of the stand. The springs should arrive with one inside the other. Arrange them in this way if they are otherwise. Attach the hooks of both springs to the hook point on the bracket, making sure they are aligned the same direction. Maintaining light tension on the springs to prevent them from slipping off the bracket hook point, use the brake spring tool to attach the springs to the cross arm hook point one at a time. Configure the tool as shown. Using the tool arm with the hook on it, grab the hook of the smaller, or inside, spring. With the other arm of the tool hooked into the right foot of the center stand, close the tool while guiding the hook up and over the hook point. Repeat the process for the larger spring. The following picture shows the detail a little better perhaps. But heed this clarification! The location of the tool arm as it is braced into the foot area of the center stand is not quite correct as shown! It should be in the lower opening, the one that would be in front if the stand were deployed. This small difference in location of that side of the tool provides an extra amount of leverage that makes the installation much easier. Of course, if you re concerned about scratching the stand you may want to protect it with a small rag or such during this process also.
6 You re almost finished! The only thing left is to replace the peg feeler on the left side pilot s peg with the one included in the package. This is necessary due to the fact the center stand will be the first thing to touch in a left hand turn now, and the longer feeler will provide that earlier warning. Use the 10mm wrench to remove the old one, and to install the new one. You re done! You should now be able to safely do this:
7 There have been some early reports of the center stand not returning fully to the stowed position after initial installation. In every case this has ceased to occur after about a week of use. Good lubrication of the moving parts is critical here. Approximately once a year it is a good idea to remove, clean, and re-grease the stand, or when using it you begin to notice it moving less freely than usual. Any questions or concerns?
