2 EMBROIDERING ON PAPER PROJECTS Paper may not seem like a good medium for embroidery, but it s actually a great medium that s simple to stitch following a few basic guidelines. Learn how to embroider on paper to create personalized greeting cards, scrapbook pages and more! Included in this e book are three projects from the 2006 regular column Paper Chase. Quick and easy, mini albums are the perfect solution to capturing life s most important people and events. General Supplies Medium-weight tear-away stabilizer Temporary spray adhesive Size 60/8 sharp needle Polyester embroidery and bobbin thread Permanent paper adhesive Paper trimmer Computer printer and word processing program Recipe album To make the recipe title pages: Hoop one layer of water-soluble tear-away stabilizer and two layers of polyester organza fabric. Embroider one design. Un-hoop. Repeat to complete all remaining designs. 3 Creative Machine

4 Supplies Note: Finished size is approximately 4 1 2" x 6". 4"x6" photo flip album Six or more sheets of card stock in coordinating colors (amount will depend on number of recipes used) Six or more sheets of patterned paper to coordinate with card stock Polyester organza fabric Water-soluble tear-away stabilizer Two 1 8"-diameter brads in coordinating colors Eight 6" lengths of ribbon in a variety of colors and widths Favorite family recipes (quantity as desired) Several take-out menus from preferred restaurants Stencil burning tool Nine embroidery designs of your choice ranging from 1" to 4" diameter Scrap some favorite moments or ideas on a smaller scale with mini-albums. They make great gifts for family and friends and can be made when you have small pockets of time. Creative Machine 4

5 Supplies Note: Finished size is approximately 4" square. Ready-made accordion album Photo corners Three sheets of card stock in two coordinating colors Four photos of your choice Rub-on lettering Two embroidery designs of your choice no larger than 3" square Remove the stabilizer following the manufacturer s directions. Trim the jump stitches. Cut around the embroidery designs as close as possible without clipping into the stitching. Use the stencil burner following the manufacturer s directions to melt away the excess fabric without touching the thread. Set aside. In a word processing program, arrange desired text within a 3 3 4" x 5 1 2" area. Print a test sheet. Align to card stock, tape to the test sheet and print again. Adhere the printed card stock piece to 4 1 2" x 6" patterned paper. In coordinating card stock, cut two 1 8" x 6" and two 1 8" x 4 1 4" strips. Adhere to the title page as a border. Arrange and adhere the embroidery designs to the card stock. If appropriate, add brads. To make the recipe card: Using a word processing program, type the desired recipes in a 4 1 4" x 6" area. Print each recipe on various colors of card stock. Switch to sewing mode and edgestitch a border around each card. Insert the recipe title cards into sleeves in the preferred order. After each title card, insert the recipe cards. Add ribbons between each category. Add the take-out menu s to the back under Mom s Secret category. Accordian album Cut one sheet of card stock to fit within the hoop. Hoop tear-away stabilizer. Spray with temporary adhesive and adhere the card stock to the stabilizer. Embroider the design at the center. Trim the stabilizer and cut the card stock around the design to measure 3 1 4" square. Mat and glue the embroidered card stock to coordinating card stock and trim to 3 1 2" square. Mat and glue this piece to another piece of coordinating card stock and trim to 3 3 4" square. Adhere photo corners in all four corners of the embroidered design. Repeat for a second embroidery design. Fill the remaining spaces with pictures trimmed to 3 5 8" square. If preferred, mat and glue the first on white card stock or print pictures with a white border. Trim the cover photo to a 1 3 8" square and adhere to the inside cover. Use rub-on wording as desired on the last photo following the manufacturer s directions. 5 Creative Machine

6 Journey album Supplies Note: Finished size is 4 1 2" diameter. Circle Book Kit such as 7 Gypsies Eight or more sheets of card stock and patterned paper in coordinating colors Three photos Rub-on lettering One 1 2"-diameter specialty brad Three 6" lengths of ribbon in various colors and widths 1"-diameter binder ring 1 8"-diameter paper punch Distressing ink Three embroidery designs of your choice no more than 3 1 2" diameter & construction To make design 1 (airplane in our sample): Cut one sheet of card stock 4 1 2" diameter. Cut another sheet 3" diameter. Distress the outside edges with distressing ink. Let dry. Create a saying in a word processing program. Print on a test sheet first. Once it s satisfactory, lay the card stock over the words and tape to the test sheet. Print a second time. Hoop tear-away stabilizer. Spray with temporary adhesive and adhere the cut piece of card stock to the stabilizer. Embroider the design in the paper center. Trim the stabilizer and glue this piece to another blank sheet of 4 1 2" round card stock. Add any desired rub-ons following the manufacturer s directions. To make design 2 (telescope with compass in our sample): Follow the same steps as outlined above for the airplane. Exception: Create the inside circle to measure 3 7 8" diameter. To make design 3 (web in our sample): Follow the same steps as outlined above. Exception: Instead of creating one inside circle, cut out four. Two should measure 1 1 4" and two should measure 2 1 4". Adhere these randomly to the 4 1 2" diameter card stock. Picture construction To make One Fine Day : Cut one sheet of card stock 4 1 2" diameter. Distress the outside edges with distressing ink, following the manufacturer s directions. Let dry. Cut the picture 3 3 4" diameter. Distress the outside edges with distressing ink. Let dry. Adhere to the previously cut card stock. Cut a separate piece of patterned paper to 1 1 4" x 4 1 2". Adhere over the picture and card stock on the right side. Use rub-on sayings on the patterned piece of paper as desired. To make Discover : Cut one sheet of card stock 4 1 2" diameter. Distress the outside edges with distressing ink. Let dry. Cut the picture 3 3 4" diameter. Distress the outside edges with distressing ink. Let dry. Adhere to the previously cut card stock. Cut a separate piece of patterned paper to 1 4" x 2 1 2". Adhere to the upper edge of the round card stock/ picture piece. Creative Machine 6

7 Instant Albums Look for ready-made mini albums from several companies. You can locate them at scrapbooking, craft and fabric stores everywhere. 7 Gypsies Making Memories Die Cuts With a View Cut six more 1 3" pieces of card stock to fit diagonally across the lower edge of the round piece. An easy way to do this is by cutting six 1 3" x 6" strips. Overlap, placing the strips on the lower edge of the circle; adhere. Trim them as close as possible to the round edge. Add rub-ons on the paper as desired. Attach a brad in the lower middle of the overlapped paper. To make Evidence : Cut one sheet of card stock to 4 1 2" round. Distress the outside edges with distressing ink. Let dry. Cut the picture to 2 3 8" x 2 3 4". Adhere to the previously cut and distressed card stock. Cut four strips of 1 2"-long pieces of card stock to fit along the four sides of the picture. This is similar to the method on the previous picture page. Cut four 1 2" x 6" strips. Place around the picture and adhere. Trim them as close as possible to the round edge. Use rub-on sayings and sporadically place them on the paper. Finishing Arrange in the desired order. Paper punch at the top of each circle about 1 2" inside the upper edge. Slide the cards onto the ring. Close and tie three ribbons on the front. General supplies Medium-weight tear-away stabilizer and bobbin thread Temporary spray adhesive Size 60/8 sharp needle Permanent paper glue Paper trimmer Dad s coupon book Supplies Note: Finished size is approximately 3 1 8" x 6 1 2". Our sample book contains four coupons. Adjust supplies to make the number of coupons desired for your own book. Four or more sheets of card stock in coordinating colors (amount will depend on number of coupons made) Four or more sheets of patterned paper to coordinate with card stock One 1 2"-diameter decorative brad in coordinating color "-diameter brads in coordinating colors Three 3" lengths of ribbon in a variety of colors and widths Rubber stamp of your choice and ink Craft knife Four embroidery designs of your choice ranging from 1"-diameter to 2" x 3" Computer printer and word processing program Hoop tear-away stabilizer. Spray the stabilizer with temporary adhesive and adhere to the card stock. Embroider the design at the paper center. Trim the stabilizer and cut the card stock about 3 8" around the design. 8 Creative Machine

9 Personalize the coupons with things your dad loves. This project could easily be adapted for mothers, grandparents, teachers or even children. Mat on a patterned piece of scrapbook paper. Trim 1 8" around all edges. Adhere by placing one brad through each corner. Set aside. Repeat for each design. To combine stamping and embroidery, stamp the pattern and then embroider over it. In a word processing program, arrange the desired text within a 2 5 8" x 5 1 4" area. Be sure to plan this around the placement of the embroidery design. Cut and adhere the printed piece to 2 7 8" x 5 1 2" card stock. Adhere the matted embroidery design to the printed piece. Cut the patterned paper 3 1 8" x 6 1 2". Mat the previous card stock piece to this one leaving 5 8" space on the left side. Repeat this process for each coupon. To create the cover, follow the above construction steps, with the exception of adhering an embroidered design to the cover. Instead, using a craft knife, cut a hole through both layers of the cover the size of the embroidered design on the page directly underneath (A). Once all of the coupons are completed, combine them together with a brad at the cover upper left corner. For added embellishment, place three strands of ribbon between the brad and paper. Four scraps of paper in coordinating colors at least 4 1 2" x 5" Three 6" lengths of brown string Alphabet stickers of your choice Polyester organza fabric Tear-away water-soluble stabilizer Stencil burner 1 8"-diameter paper hole punch Three plastic bags measuring 4"-square, 4" x 4 7 8" and 4 x 5 1 2" Marshmallows, chocolate bar and graham crackers Two embroidery designs of your choice no more than 1"-square Hoop one layer of tear-away watersoluble stabilizer and two layers of polyester organza fabric. Embroider one design. Repeat for the second design. Remove the stabilizer by carefully tearing away around the design. Trim the jump stitches. Cut around the embroidery designs as close as possible without clipping threads. Use the stencil burner following the manufacturer s directions to melt away the excess fabric without touching the thread. Set the embroidery designs aside. Trim four scraps of paper to measure 4 1 2" x 5". Fold in half. Trim a second piece to 2 3 8" x 4 1 4". Adhere to the front of the previous piece. Repeat the step for third and fourth pieces to measure 2 1 8" x 4" and 1 3 4" x 3 5 8". Add alphabet stickers. Glue embroidery designs in place with permanent paper glue. Mother s day gift bag Supplies Note: Finished size is approximately 3 7 8" x 5". Box made from die cut system (available at craft or scrapbook stores) Two sheets of card stock for tag (can use scrap card stock) One piece of art paper cut to fit within a 4 -square embroidery hoop Alphabet stickers and rub-on lettering 9" length of ribbon 12 -length of yarn, cut in half Two 1 8"-diameter eyelets in coordinating colors and appropriate setting tools One 1 8"-diameter round brad in coordinating color One embroidery design of your choice no larger than 2 1 2"-square Hoop tear-away stabilizer. Spray the art paper with temporary adhesive and adhere to the stabilizer. Embroider the design at the paper center. Trim the stabilizer and cut the card stock around the design to measure 3" x 3 1 2". Tear the left side and lower right corner of the paper. Set aside. At a local craft or scrapbook store, make a box using a die-cut system. While the box is still flat, adhere the embroidered design on paper to the front of the box using two eyelets. Place them 1 2" from the upper and lower edges and the left side. Tie yarn through the eyelets. Use paper adhesive to adhere the remaining sides to the box. Fold the paper on the perforations and adhere together. To make a tag, trim one piece of card stock to 2" x 2 7 8" and the other piece to 1 3 4" x 2 1 2". Adhere the small one on top of large one. Using rub-on sayings and stickers, create greetings on the tag. Place the brad through the left corner and adhere to the box handle. Tie ribbon around bag handles. 10 Creative Machine

11 Embellish your own gift wrap with customized wording, flowers and jewels. Place marshmallows in smallest bag, chocolate bars in medium bag and graham crackers in largest bag. Layer all three bags on top of each other. Sandwich them in middle of the folded tag and punch two holes 2" apart through all five layers. Use string to secure the tag and bags together. Wedding gift box Supplies Gift box measuring 4 1 2" x 6" x 4 1 2" 15" x 24" rectangle of art paper One 12" x 12" sheet of card stock in coordinating color One 12" x 12" sheet of fabric paper Two 1 -diameter silk flowers Four 1 2"-diameter crystal brads Die-cutter and scallop die-cut pattern Ribbons in various colors and widths: two 2 1 2" and two 12" lengths Six worded embroidery designs of your choice no more than 1 2" x 4". Note: Use embroidery software to create your own wording, if desired. Use embroidery software and a larger hoop, if available, to group all designs together. Otherwise, re-hoop as needed. Hoop tear-away stabilizer. Cut the fabric paper in half. Spray it with temporary adhesive and adhere it to the stabilizer (place in a box for protection). Embroider the designs. Trim the stabilizer and cut the fabric paper around the design to measure 3 1 4" x 11". Repeat to embroider on the remaining half of the fabric paper. To give added dimension, stitch a straight stitch 1 4" from the upper and lower edges on the fabric paper (B). Set aside. B Straight stitch 1 4" the upper and lower edges on fabric paper. Wrap the box using the art paper. Adhere along the edges where the seams will be covered by the fabric paper. Using a die-cutter and the scallop die, cut four 1 2" x 12" long scallops from one sheet of 12" x 12" card stock. Adhere 1 2" from the upper and lower edge of wrapped box. This will require two strips around the upper edge and two around the lower edge. Overlap and adhere at the seams. These will be placed along the box sides. Place two silk flowers as desired on one embroidered side. Secure with brads. Embellish randomly with two remaining brads. Wrap both pieces around the gift box. Overlap on the sides and adhere. Tie the two 12"-long ribbons around the box and tie in a bow. Tie the remaining two ribbons in a bow around the larger bow. General Supplies, bobbin and sewing thread Medium-weight tear-away stabilizer Temporary spray adhesive Size 60/8 sharp needle Permanent paper adhesive Paper trimmer Computer, printer and word processing program Supplies Coordinating card stock: Two 12"-square sheets; One 8 1 2" x 11" sheet; two large scraps Five sheets of coordinating patterned paper or several large scraps Polyester organza fabric Water-soluble stabilizer and bobbin thread Stencil cutter/burner Four photo corners Eleven chipboard numbers Pencil Emory board Four photos of your choice One embroidery design of your choice no larger than 1 1 2" diameter 12 Creative Machine

13 Apples Hoop one layer of water-soluble stabilizer and two layers of polyester organza. Embroider one design. Repeat three more times. Note: Use software and a larger hoop, if available, to group several designs and save time. Remove the stabilizer by tearing away. Trim the jump stitches. Cut around the embroidery designs as close as possible without clipping the threads. Use a stencil burning tool to melt away the excess fabric without touching the thread. Set the embroidery designs aside. Use a 12"-square of card stock for the background. Trim the second piece of 12" card stock to 11"-square. Adhere to the 12"-square background card stock using permanent paper adhesive. Trim four photos to the desired size, including one large photo. Trim the 8 1 2" x 11" sheet of card stock to 1 8" larger than your largest photo. Mat the large photo on this piece of card stock. Mat the other photos on coordinating card stock. Trim, leaving 1 8" around the edges. Apply the photo corners to the large photo. Position and adhere to the base in the desired locations. Using the chipboard numbers, lay each number on coordinating patterned paper face down. Trace around the number with the pencil and cut out the paper using small, sharp scissors. Adhere the paper to the chipboard and file the edges with an emory board to create a worn look. Adhere to the page as desired. Use less or more numbers as desired. In a word processing program, create journaling as desired. Print on coordinating colors of card stock. Trim each piece individually and adhere each one to the page between the numbers. Adhere the embroidered designs in locations around the page as desired. Pumpkin patch journey Prepare the 12" square of art paper by creating a scallop edge 1" in from the upper and lower edges using the scallop edge ruler. Hoop tear-away stabilizer in your largest hoop. Spray with temporary adhesive and adhere the sheet. If available, use a software program to resize the embroidery design in a scale of 3 4" to 3 3 4" sizes. Copy and paste the design multiple times and arrange randomly. Save as a new design. If software is not available, use the machine s touch screen to vary the size and re-hoop as needed. Embroider the designs. Repeat on same paper, if necessary, to cover the entire page with embroidery. Use the 12"-square of card stock for the background. Cut two 1" x 12" pieces of patterned paper. Adhere 1 2" in from the upper and lower edges of the 12"-square background using the paper adhesive. Adhere the embroidered scallop paper on top of the patterned pieces allowing a small amount of the patterned paper to show. Supplies One sheet of 12"-square card stock One 12"-square of art paper Two large scraps of card stock Two sheets of patterned scrapbook paper in coordinating colors Two 12" strands of ribbon in varying widths in coordinating colors Four 11" strands of ribbon in varying widths and coordinating colors Eight 2" strands of ribbon in coordinating colors Scallop edge ruler Six 1 2"-diameter buttons Stapler Four photos of your choice outline design of your choice Optional: Two 5 8"-diameter buttons Convert to sewing mode. Sew two 12" pieces of ribbon 1 1 2" in from the upper and lower edge. Sew two more 11" pieces of ribbon onto the scalloped paper at the sides to create a frame. Sew another two pieces of ribbon 1 4" in from the ribbon on the sides. Thread small pieces of ribbon through the buttons and tie in a knot. Adhere Creative Machine 13

14 Supplies Three full sheets of 12"-square coordinating card stock Six or more sheets or large scraps of coordinating card stock Three photos of your choice Letter stickers Rub-on letters Metal charms Corner rounder One embroidery design of your choice no more than 2 1 2"-square the buttons to the four corners on top of the ribbon. Trim the photos to the desired size and mat on patterned paper and again on the card stock scraps. Trim 1 8" around the edges each time. Position and adhere on the page where desired. In a word processing program, create journaling as desired. Print on coordinating colors of card stock. Trim each piece individually and adhere each one to the page with a folded ribbon and a staple. Add the two 5 8"-diameter buttons to the embroidery designs, if desired. Winter magic Hoop tear-away stabilizer. Spray a 4"-square of card stock with temporary adhesive and adhere to the stabilizer. (Place in a box for protection against overspray.) Embroider the design at the paper center. Trim the stabilizer and cut the card stock in a circle about 3 8" larger than the design. Mat it to another piece of card stock using the permanent paper adhesive. Trim 3 8" around the circle. Convert to sewing mode and straight stitch around the outer edge of each circle. Set aside. Repeat again. Use a 12"-square of card stock for the background. Use the corner rounder to round the four corners of the paper. Trim one sheet of card stock to " square. Mat and adhere with paper adhesive to the 12"-square card stock. Trim another sheet in a coordinating color to " square. Round the four corners in the same manner as previously explained. Mat and adhere it to the "-square card stock. Sew a border 1 8" around the edge of each piece of card stock. Trim three photos to the desired sizes, making one smaller. Mat the smaller of two photos with coordinating card stock and trim 1 8" around the photos. Place one photo in the upper left corner and adhere. Place a large photo in the middle of the card stock. Adhere the last photo in the lower right corner. Using a word processing program, create the desired journaling in a 2" x 2 3 8" text box area. Print, trim and adhere next to the lower photo. Adhere one embroidered circle in the upper right corner and the other one in the lower left corner. Add charms and rub-on lettering where desired, following the manufacturer s directions.
