LIFEBOOK 2015 DRAWING ON THE INNER WORLD with JANE DAVENPORT drawing on your INNER WORLD with 1
INTRODUCTION Hello again Lifebookers. What a pleasure to be here again! For my lesson this year we are going to draw on our inner world. Literally! What makes you tick? What lights you up? Who lights you up! What is your favourite food? Colour! Place! Think about yourself and the things, people and places that you feel gratitude for. What makes you feel like celebrating? Small moments and big events you hold close to your heart. THE ARTIST IS expressing AN INNER WORLD Jackson Pollock All of these things help build our inner world. With all of the answers in your mind, and gratitude in your heart, try and find images that represent your thoughts. Look in old books, magazines and on the net. We will use these symbols to create a collage and then draw right on them! In this lesson you will also find some basic face and figure drawing. I even included a fun tutorial on drawing a fuller figure. I can t wait to see what your create! xoxox 2
CREATE YOUR INNER WORLD WHAT MAKES YOU, YOU. You may like to represent your qualities very literally, or in an abstract way. There is no right or wrong. Remember that this is your LIFEBOOK, so it doesn t need to make sense to anyone but you. For example, I love music, When I am not listening to music, I am playing songs inside my head. How to represent that in a collage? Sheet music was the answer for me. SOMETIMES the heart SEES WHAT IS invisible TO THE EYE. H. Jackson Brown, Jr As I thought of my inner world, birds and butterflies kept coming to the surface. Things with wings. So I used images from a waterdamaged book that connected with me in the moment. I also used pretty paper serviettes (napkins) and an old French dictionery to furnish my page. 3
DRAWING ON YOUR INNER WORLD I created a collage while thinking of my inner world - the thoughts, experiences, things, people and places that make me light up! Use Matte Medium to stick them down, and to seal the surface. Let it dry overnight. I love to colour copy my own artwork to re-use. Laser colour copies on office paper work best. You could also create a face on paper and then cut it out to use. I teach this trademark process in my online workshop, Mermaid Circus with Teesha Moore. Glue the face down with matte medium and while it s drying draw the figure. Make sue you watch the videos for complete instructions, and the bonus on fuller figures too. To simplify the image, use gesso around your subject. Your inner world collage will still show through, so nothing is ever truly lost. 4
DRAWING ON YOUR INNER WORLD Use matte acrylic paint on the face. I like Dune s Beige and AC Flesh by Ceramcoat. Paint around the features. You should still be able to see the original details from the colour copy peeking through. Add a little life to the cheeks with Coral Ceramcoat ( or similar). Add Butter Cream for highlights. If you want to, bring a little of the flesh paint down into the body. Once the paint is completely dry, you can use colour pencils, watercolour, or more paint to add details to the face and shading. If you are very new to this, my book, Drawing & Painting Beautiful Faces will help you. I added a glaze over the collage for the hair to bring it together as one area. I used turquoise Dye-na-Flow. All of the products I used are favourites and available in my store. 5
