1 A T U T O R I A L B Y K A T E R S A C R E S Lion Trinket Box How to Make a Polymer Clay Lion Themed Trinket Box Tutorial NOTICE: This project will take anywhere from 2-6 hours to create. 2 Materials Needed: Polymer Clay (Depends on the size of your tin / trinket box) Repurposed cat food container or other small empty jar/can/glass container Exacto Knife Your Hands Beads for Eyes & Added Decoration Perfect Pearls Metallic Powders Polymer Clay Oven Varnish Let s Get Started! This tutorial assumes that you have a basic knowledge and understanding of polymer clay. Please prepare & condition clay & blends accordingly BEFORE beginning this project. Need Help Conditioning Your Clay? Get help conditioning your clay here: Cover Your Tin Follow these steps if you are using an aluminum tin can that you want to cover completely with clay. Measure sides of tin and cut the clay to match width with one squared end Cover tin with Sculpey Bake & Bond & spread with finger Place wide ribbon on side of can and gently adhere Trim ribbon ends to meet Smooth ends with your finger 2

3 Finish Covering the Rest of Your Tin 3 Continue to work on covering the entirety of your can. 1. Cut a piece to match the inside width. 2. Join edges & smooth. 3. Cut a piece to fit the bottom of the can. 4. Fit it onto the can bottom. 5. Smooth seam. 6. Cut a piece just smaller than the inside bottom of your can. 7. Fit piece into the bottom of the can & TIP: add a rim to help cover the seam. If you have properly conditioned your clay, blending the seams 8. Embellish the bottom as you wish! Add and making them disappear will bugs, flowers, rice beads it doesn t be easy if not, well matter, but be creative. When you are done doing the majority of your can it s time to do the hardest part, the rim. Make a snake of clay Cut the snake down the center to make a groove for the rim. Place the groove of the snake over the rim lip Press down along the entire top of the can to fit Flare out (as in my example) or smooth and leave a rounded edge. Use a stamp to emboss the tin all over

4 Get the Book Make the Box Lid Be sure to use a cookie cutter that is larger than your can (see the photo top left) to ensure that the lid will completely cover the box. Cut out the lid top Cut a smaller & double thickness inside piece to allow the lid to fit inside the can Embellish the underside if you wish (I signed mine & added details that would match the inside). Remember this is the INSIDE of the box lid, we will decorate the top of the box lid shortly. BAKE your lid following the manufactuer s recommendation on the package. Choose your color palette before creating your lion. Christi s detailed instructions for creating your own Big Cat can be found on pages 30-34, The lion sculpture that follows will be based on Christi s design, but using my own steps to make it. Remember to be creative. This is YOUR project and YOUR design; challenge yourself and your polymer talent and stretch yourself in order to be creative! 4

5 Make Your Lion 5 It s very important that your lid has been baked, otherwise you will smoosh your had work for the inside rim. Remember that you are decorating the opposite side of your lid. Add a circle rim matching your lids size with an open center. Secure it with liquid polymer clay. Add liquid polymer clay to the opening and along the rim of the raw clay. Make your basic lion head shape (see Christi s Cats book page 31). Add the main features of your lion (eyes, nose, cheeks, chin, & nose). Embellish your lion with curls and swirls of clay, beads, gemstones, pearls, and don t forget his whiskers. Bake your lion according to the manufacturer s instructions. You can add an antique finish (if you choose). o Top photos = before antique o Bottom = after antique Add a varnish coat to your project & rebake at 200 degrees for 10 minutes.
