5 Dear Teacher or Parent, Welcome to a new kind of compilation of the best of the the best of Holidays & Seasonal Celebrations magazines. This time we have gathered the very best arts and crafts activities that we have to offer and compiled them into one big, easy-to-use resource for your convenience. We think you ll be pleased with what we ve chosen. We want to thank every author, illustrator, and teacher who contributed to this book. Without them none of this would be possible. We ve divided these activities by season, and you ll be amazed, and happy, to discover the variety of crafts available for many holidays and all seasons of the year. For fall, you ll find back-to-school ideas such as personalized pencil cases and school folders to help students start the year in an organized way. We ve also provided art activities and crafts to celebrate Grandparents Day, Columbus Day, and Halloween. Your students will also enjoy the crafts that make use of nature s autumn products such as leaves, seeds, and nuts. To add interest to your winter classroom, try some of the snowmen crafts included as well as ideas for Book Week, Thanksgiving (using gourds, pinecones, weeds, and corn), Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Year s, and, of course, Valentine s Day. We ve also included some creative ideas for reusing Christmas cards. Spring into spring with the crafts we ve provided for St. Patrick s Day and Earth Day as well as April Fools hats, Easter bunnies, baskets and bonnets, and fun egg projects. For summer, your students will enjoy crafts for May Day and Cinco de Mayo, gifts for Mother s Day and Father s Day, and patriotic crafts for Flag Day and July 4th. You ll also find fun crafts to celebrate summer with butterflies and watermelon. These arts and crafts are not only fun; they re educational! Your students will learn about famous people and events, the natural world, and much more as they work on these projects individually and in groups. And most of the activities in this book require only basic arts and crafts materials such as paper; scissors; glue; paints; crayons; containers, such as jars and boxes; and natural items that can be gathered from most yards or parks. 6 Back-to-School A R T Personalized Pencil Case Here is a project to help cure the lost pencil syndrome. Personal pencil cases are handy to use, cannot be confused with another classmate s, and are colorful enough to find in any desk. Supplies felt, ruler, chalk, glitter, Velcro, scissors, glue Instructions 1. Have each child measure and cut two rectangles, one 3" x 7" and one 3" x 9", from felt. Use chalk to draw the cutting lines. 2. Let them write their names on the smaller rectangle with glue, then sprinkle glitter over the glue. Allow glue to dry. 3. Have children place glue around three edges (two long, one short) on the back of the smaller rectangle. Top with the second rectangle, matching bottom corners. Press the glued edges together. 4. Finally, turn the pencil case back over to the front side and glue Velcro pieces to the top centers of both rectangles. Allow the glue to dry before closing. Use: Children can slide their pencils into the long pocket, fold over the top flap, and press the Velcro pieces together to lock the case. Individual pencil cases help children keep track of their writing materials and keep pencils from rolling out of desks. by Marie E.
