1 ASSURANCES: By the end of First Grade the Student will: 1. Understand the concepts of time and chronology by distinguishing among past, present, and future events. 2. Identify anthems and mottoes of the United States and Texas. 3. Understand the concepts of goods and services and the value of work. 4. Identify historic figures and ordinary people who exhibit good citizenship. 5. Create simple maps to identify the location of places in the classroom, school, and community. First Grade and Geography Skills categorize choose classify computer create decide develop discuss express generalize graph interpret interview main idea order predict Throughout the year as students learn social studies content, they are expected to master geography and social studies skills from the TEKS. Although these skills may also be taught in language arts or mathematics classes, their mastery is essential for practical application of social studies content. Teachers should plan appropriate activities that incorporate geography and social studies skills into each lesson. 1. Obtain information about a topic using a variety of sources such as conversations, interviews, and music. (TEKS 1.17A) 2. Obtain information about a topic using a variety of visual sources such as pictures, graphics, television, maps, computer images, literature and artifacts. (TEKS 1.17B) 3. Sequence and categorize information. (TEKS 1.17C) 4. Identify main ideas from oral, visual, and print sources. (TEKS 1.17D) 5. Express ideas orally based on knowledge and experiences. (TEKS 1.18A) 6.
