1 EMF Quarterly Newsletter Spring 2016 Burns Night A lot of fun was had getting ready for Burn s night with specially designed napkin rings, menus, and table cockades like the one made by this gentleman We really were very lucky this year to have the treat of a piper in full rig brother of one of our residents and a hit with all. The Haggis, as is traditional, was hunted down over the Highland Hills by skilled stalkers, ceremonially piped in and then addressed with the Rabbie Burns Lines Chieftain of the Pudding Race EMF Nursing Station Bentley, Farnham, Surrey GU10 5NG

2 Flower Arranging Whilst fresh flowers tend to be pricy at this time of year, we had a lot of fun arranging surprisingly realistic silk flowers. The resulting arrangements were enjoyed by all, particularly the ladies involved in creating them

3 Any excuse for a party. Hard on the heels of Burn s night and just squeezed in before Valentine, we celebrated Chinese New Year the year of the Monkey on this occasion. The dragon made for the event was most impressive and every table sported a lantern made by the residents. A lunch of sweet chilli chicken with a light and attractive fruit pudding was very popular, whilst the melt in the mouth prawn crackers disappeared rapidly. A lot of fun was had with the Chinese horoscopes prepared for each resident some more recognisable than others!

4 E.M.F. Library Some of our regular visitors may have noticed we have been steadily amassing a collection of coffee table books, both to be enjoyed by the residents and shared with their visitors. To avoid confusion we have our own ex libris labels to be applied to the books tho it is very easy to get diverted from the job in hand and start reading the books instead of labelling them! P.S if anyone is clearing out attractive illustrated books on almost any subject, we would be very happy to receive them except we probably have enough cookery books now!

5 A Picture Paints a Thousand Words? We do enjoy taking photos here, partly to prompt memories, partly to entertain our residents and partly to communicate with our families. As well as digital dispersal we make hard copies, this gentleman is making a splendid job of trimming the photos to size before they are mounted on our news board. Bunting Last year we festooned our garden with lovely bunting sewn by our residents. This year, for indoor use only, we have already made pretty rose printed wall paper bunting bound to come in useful for tea-parties and other festive occasions in the future!

6 Valentine s What a busy, crafty few weeks it was; at the other end of the week to Chinese New Year we celebrated Valentine s Day. The dining room was decorated throughout with pretty fabric and paper hearts - here being carefully folded by one of our residents. Whilst two tables were reserved for our couples (with almost 119 years of marriage between them), all the tables were beautifully laid with flickering battery candles, individual heart place markers and glasses of wine or pop for all. The afternoon continued the theme of light hearted romance with a showing of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. The quick to make, pretty wallpaper bunting will also be suitable for tea-parties and all sorts of other occasions!

7 Animal Magic A few of our residents visited Balmoral sitting room one afternoon to meet an interesting range of animals. The liveliest by far was the tortoise and whilst the snake received mixed appreciation, the subtle colours of the Whisper, the Barn Owl, and the exuberance of the Blue Macaw impressed all.

8 Make Time for Tea And a jolly occasion to raise funds for the very worthwhile Dementia Uk charity. A good turn out from all wings including 5 of our residents and relatives along with raffle and Guess The Name games resulted in an impressive 180 plus pounds being raised, as well as a good time being had by all! Time for a Cuppa for Dementia Uk

9 Just Like The Ritz!... Was the verdict of one of the almost 50 people who enjoyed the Family Tea on the eve of Mother s Day. The tables were laid with beautiful plates and posies of spring flowers in vases made by the residents using jam jars, crȇpe paper and trimmings! Cake stands and serving plates groaned beneath the assortment of cakes and dainty sandwiches. Beautifully presented and decorated, the kitchen had done a fabulous job of creating a proper traditional English Tea even more impressive when one realises this was also done two days before for the Dementia Uk tea (see above) and for the main building on the same day! Every item (with the exception of a few mini muffins) home made and decorated - including the six dozen jam tarts made for the event by a few of the residents! All this in addition to the regular three meals a day!

10 Touchy Feely? We have long had a collection of snuggly rugs in E.M.F, including cotton patchworks sewn by the residents and ones made of colourful squares knitted by the residents. We have recently enhanced our collection with Calming Tactile lap blankets featuring colour coordinated squares of fabrics in a variety of different fabrics for fidgety fingers to feel. In addition more stimulating rugs have been created in bright colours with both three dimensional finishes in a variety of fabrics and jolly images - all enjoyed by our residents!

12 Boing! To put a spring in our hearts we made some hilarious pom-pom bunnies and chicks lots of wool winding (here the hands travel so fast they are just a blur!) then the fun of adding features to give character to each bunny or baby bird!
