2 World Centres Challenge Pack Welcome to the World Centres Challenge pack. This Challenge contains some new and exciting ways of finding out more about the World Centres and the countries in which they are situated. All you need to do is first choose 4 activities: these can either be from the same World Centre or a combination from each of the World Centres. Once you have chosen your 4 activities choose one additional activity from the World Centres page. On completion of all 5 activities just send off for your badges. All money raised from the sale of these badges will support day trips and residential opportunities for 2 nd Purley Brownies, Guides, Rangers and Leaders within this country and around the world. We hope you enjoy completing this badge!

3 Yodelling Can you find out how to yodel and have a go yourselves! Fondue Try making a cheese fondue and dipping pieces of bread or make a chocolate fondue and dip some fruit or marshmallows! Hopscotch A traditional game in Switzerland is hopscotch. Draw your own hopscotch area and play a game. National day Swiss National Day is celebrated on 1 st August. Traditionally bonfires, barbecues, music, dance, gymnastic displays and fireworks make up the festivities. Why not hold your own festivities to celebrate Swiss National day and try some traditional foods

4 Hot Air Balloons In January there is an International Hot Air balloon festival in Switzerland. Design your own hot air balloons. Our Chalet Song Each World Centre has its own song. Learn and sing the Our Chalet Song Swiss Embroidery This is very intricate and delicate and incorporates some very beautiful designs. Try some simple cross stitch such as an Edelweiss Flower. Cows Swiss Cows wear a bell around their necks to be identifiable by their owners. The chief cow wears the biggest bell and is said to be the leader of the herd. All the other cows in the herd follow her up to the alpine pastures for each summer period. Try following a trail where only the Chief cow can see and others are blindfolded.

5 Crochet This is an old English craft. Can you ask someone to come into your meeting place and teach you how to do simple crochet. Make a simple crochet flower. The London Underground Did you know the London Underground is the oldest underground system in the world. Try and complete a London Underground Station quiz Dominoes Dominoes is a very old English game. See if you can find a set and have a few games in your meeting place. Pax Lodge Song Each World Centre has its own song. Learn and sing the Pax Lodge Song

6 Tea Tea is a traditional drink in England. See if you can buy some flavoured tea and hold your own traditional tea party. Porridge Porridge is a very popular breakfast cereal in many parts of the United Kingdom. Traditionally it can be served sweet or salty but more recently new flavours have emerged. Hold a porridge tasting evening. Patron Saints Can you find out the names and legends of the 4 patron saints of the United Kingdom. Tell their stories in a drama evening. Proverbs England is famous for it s proverbs and old wives tales. Research into the history of some of these and find out how they came about:

7 Mariachi Bands Mexico is known for their Mariachi Bands. Each band is made up of various different instruments. Form your own Mariachi Band. Xochimilco Xochimilco in Mexico is known for it s floating gardens. Barges along the canals are decorated with thousands of flowers. Try making mini barges and decorate them with paper flowers for your own floating gardens. Burritos Burritos are a popular lunch in Mexico. These are filled with different meats and vegetables. Try making your own versions of burritos. Which is your favourite flavour? Our Cabana Song Each World Centre has its own song. Learn and sing the Our Cabana Song

8 Ponchos A Poncho is a traditional item of clothing in Mexico. It is usually made up of many different bright colours. Using coloured bin liners make your own ponchos. Pyramids Mexico is famous for it s pyramids dating back to the Aztecs. In Mexico, Aztecs built pyramids as altars to worship their various gods. Can you make your own pyramids using only marshmallows and cocktail sticks? Aztec Pictures Aztec people used to paint on many different surfaces, including wood and papyrus. Try painting on a different surface other than paper. Our Cabana breakfast: Try making this breakfast using English ingredients: Get 6 pieces of bread and slice open. Spread a layer of warmed and then mashed baked beans along the slice and top this with grated cheese. Grill until the cheese melts, then enjoy!

9 Indian Dancing Find some Indian music from the library or another source. Have a go at some Indian Dancing. Chess Chess originated in India in the 6 th Century. Learn the rules and hold your own chess tournaments. Colours This game can be played using English colours for younger children and Hindi colours for the older sections: A leader calls out a colour and players run to touch something of that colour. Sangam Song Each World Centre has its own song. Learn and sing the Sangam Song

10 Peacock Craft The Peacock is the national bird of India, try making some peacock crafts. Try making an origami peacock or a peacock from a paper plate. Patang Bazi In January lots of children make kites for the big kite festival. Try making your own kites and holding your own festival. Sari A Sari is a traditional item of clothing in India. Can you find out how to wear one. See if you can find someone who will let you try one on. Chapatis These are a good accompaniment to any Indian meal, try making your own: Mix a tablespoon of oil, a pinch of salt and 4oz flour together with a little water, to form a firm dough. Divide into 8 pieces and flatten into small rounds, then cook in an unoiled pan until lightly brown on both sides. Enjoy with different Indian foods.
