that effort gets noticed. This month had two of those instances. The first one was when our club, the Sonoran Desert Model Builders was selected by the IPMS as the Region 10 Chapter of the year.

3 Editor Workbench Hello Fellow modelers and dear friends, Our hobby is often a lonely journey. We each in our own way deal with the challenges that our current build presents to us every time we sit at our workbenches. Sure, some of us belong to one model club or another and within those clubs we often do things to help others. We try and teach the younger generations, to pass the torch. More often than not this effort seems to go unnoticed, but sometimes all those days of volunteering at Make and Takes, all the hours spent building something that you will eventually give away, all that effort gets noticed. This month had two of those instances. The first one was when our club, the Sonoran Desert Model Builders was selected by the IPMS as the Region 10 Chapter of the year. I was pretty happy when I read the because it meant all the work that you guys do month after month has been noticed and it s making a difference. So I would like to congratulate all our SDMB members for this achievement. I am super proud to be a part of this awesome modeling club. The second instance was a more personal one. I spent Saturday April 16 th at this year s 2 nd Model Mania model swap meet. It was a great event where I got a chance to spend time with many of our club members. While at the swap meet I met a nice gentleman who told me he loved the club s newsletter and he reads it every month in our website. I felt like that was the ultimate compliment and I greatly appreciate it. I do feel kind of bad since I honestly don t remember his name, so I hope if he is reading that he knows I am horrible a remembering names but his kind words were incredibly motivating, so thank you so much. This month we spotlight several subjects with a focus on Science Fiction models. Also widely known as Sci-Fi, this genre offers unlimited possibilities for modelers since it encompasses speculative fiction dealing with imaginative concepts such as futuristic science and technology. We will take a special look at the work of our of our club members, Senji Watanabe. Senji s Sci-fi models are quite inspiring and awesome looking. I hope you enjoy this issue, and don t miss our exhibit at the library next month. Until next time. Model on! 3

As always, we had an amazing turnout of both club members and models on display. Gearing up for our Library display, Clara showed us her Bandai s Scout Speeder Bike. Dick Smith continues with his resolution. No, not the Vodka, but completing all his started models. He is currently working with this F-86 in 1/48 th. 4

7 UPCOMING EVENTS CLUB NEWS SDMB Monthly Meeting Our club s next meeting will be held on May 5th, 2016 from 6:30 8:30. It will be held at our regular meeting location. (See Page 2 for details). Make and Take at the Pima Air and Space Museum - This event is designed to introduce children to the hobby of model building and the math and historical research used to build accurate scale models. The event will take place May 7th, 2016 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM. Don t forget to support out monthly raffle! This month we bring you a special raffle. 8 CLUB NEWS UPCOMING EVENTS Models in The Movies The Sequel This year s theme for our library exhibit is Models from Movies, TV and Books Part II. This theme, like last year is meant to evoke the viewer s memories of their favorite Movies and TV shows. Come and visit the library through the month of May and enjoy scenes from your favorite movies and TV shows represented in scale. Next month we will bring you full coverage of this awesome display. 10 GREEBLIES If you are an avid Sci-fi modeler, especially if you are into building space ships you have probably come across the term Greeblies before. Greeblies is a term used to describe the layering of smaller bits on larger objects to make them look more detailed and complex and therefore more visually interesting. The detail can be made from simple geometric primitives (such as cylinders, cubes and rectangles) or more complex shapes, such as pieces of

special effects. In physical models, these greeblies could be anything from parts of plastic cut to an interesting shape, or actual elements taken from shop-bought model kits.

11 GREEBLIES Model builders work on the studio model of the Millennium Falcon. Note the stash of donor kits used in the process. machinery (cables, tanks, sprockets) Greeblies are often present on models or drawings of fictional spacecraft or architectural constructs in science fiction and are used in the movie industry for special effects. In physical models, these greeblies could be anything from parts of plastic cut to an interesting shape, or actual elements taken from shop-bought model kits. For instance, in Star Wars the original Imperial Star Destroyer was constructed from a plywood frame and adorned with sheet styrene. Panel 11 lines were cut into the sheet styrene, but essentially that left the ship looking extremely bare. Hundreds of model kits were purchased and the model department promptly took pieces of the model kits and cut them up and stuck them along with more sheet styrene to the surfaces of the ship. The ultimate effect was to make the ship appear more believable to the viewer through the addition of these large areas of ancillary details. The greeblies themselves served no purpose other than to fill space and

As would be expected, given these origins, greebling is most commonly associated with the particular kind of large city-like spaceships made popular in Star Wars, but has been generalized to refer to any dense covering by different (usually mechanical) components. Similarly, Borg starships (and drones) in Star Trek appear heavily "greebled" using leftover sprues from previous kitbashing and photo etched bits. An anecdote from the creation of the first Star Wars movie involves the Tunisian customs enquiring what a part of C-3PO's costume (listed as "assorted greeblies") was. This month we take a look at one of these interesting machines that resides currently at the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona. The United States Air Force s Strategic Air Command had F- 86 Sabres in service from 1949 through The F-86s were assigned to the 22nd Bomb Wing, the 1st Fighter Wing and the 1st Fighter Interceptor Wing. The F-86 was the primary U.S. air combat fighter during the Korean War, with significant numbers of the first three production models seeing combat. The F-86 was produced as both a fighter-interceptor and fighter-bomber. Several variants were introduced over its production life, with improvements and different armament implemented. The fighter-bomber version (F-86H) could carry 15

In addition to its distinguished service in Korea, USAF F-86s also served in various stateside and overseas roles throughout the early part of the Cold War. As newer Century Series fighters came on line, F-86s were transferred to Air National Guard (ANG) units. The last ANG F-86s continued in U.S. service until Later on F-86s went on to see service with the air forces of allied nations including Pakistan, Canada, Portugal and Australia. 17

18 Scorpion Gallery Annette Sostarich sent us a photo of her alternate history hover tank with a pretty nifty narrative. The Nazis discovered Antigravity sometime in 1946, and though it was not well understood, built a prototype Schwebeflug-panzer (Hover-Tank) on an existing light tank chassis. The diesel engine of the tank was used to power a generator that drove the Moebius-Wound Delta-C lift coils, constructed from a bluish alloy of rare-earth metals. It did indeed hover about 1.5 meters off the ground, and performed well in the initial test, achieving a ground speed of roughly 80 Km/Hr. When the field showed signs of instability, the crew of two attempted, unsuccessfully, to shut down the system. The Antigravity generator continued to run, even when the engine's fuel was shut off, and the crew attempted to exit the vehicle. Eyewitness accounts vary, but the consensus is that the crew, as they left the vehicle, were surrounded by a blue nimbus and began screaming as if in pain, then disappeared, leaving no visible trace. One man who approached the vehicle at this time also vanished. The tank was observed from a distance for several weeks, and continued to hover in one place, long after any fuel or electrical charge should have been exhausted. There was some speculation that the field coils had effected a permanent change to the atomic structure. The vehicle was eventually abandoned where it was and all records of it's construction (and it's engineers) were destroyed. 18
