Hello Mystery Reader! So, you want to start your own Whodunit Mystery Book Club? How exciting! In this booklet, you will find tips and activities for creating your very own book club! This Whodunit Mystery Book Club Starter Kit belongs to: Choose a Ron Roy mystery to kick off your book club! There are three great mystery series to choose from: A to Z Mysteries, Calendar Mysteries, and Capital Mysteries. Learn more about each series below! Calendar Mysteries features the younger siblings and cousin of the main characters in A to Z Mysteries! There s a new mystery to solve each month! Crack the case with Dick, Josh, and Ruth Rose in the exciting A to Z Mysteries series! Meet KC and Marshall and help them solve exciting mysteries in Washington, D.C.! 2 3

Who? First, make a list of who you would like to invite to be in your mystery book club: Now, reach out to all your friends listed above and see if they want to be a Whodunit Mystery Book Club Member, too! With your parents help and permission, you can also post a flyer in your school or local library to get new members. Why? Why are you starting a mystery book club? Have all of the members write down why they want to be in the book club. (Love to read? Want to make new friends? Love a good mystery?) Where? Where are some places you and your friends would want to explore? (Your house? The park? The library? Each month can be different!) When? A lot of book clubs meet once a month. This gives you and your friends time to finish a book! So, pick the day of the week and the time that works best for everyone. The Whodunit Mystery Book Club will meet the of each month at am/pm. (For example: The Whodunit Mystery Book Club will meet the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 am/pm.) 4 5

You may or may not know every member of your book club. In case you don t know everyone (or you just want to have some fun!), here are some activities to help you get to know your fellow book club members! I Like To... Sit everyone in a circle. Ask everyone to think of something they like to do. Pick someone to start. For example: I like to ride my bike. Then the person to the left must repeat what the first member likes to do and add their own sentence. For example: Mike likes to ride his bike and I like to play with my dog. Keep going around the circle and see how much everyone can remember about each other! Detect the Truth! Everyone writes three things about themselves on a piece of paper: two true statements and one statement that isn t true. Each person then reads their own statements. Each member is a detective and must figure out which of the three statements is false. Who had the hardest statements to guess? Did anyone guess them all correctly? If someone gets stuck, the people who remember can act out the sentence to help the others remember. 6 7

The Whodunit Mystery Book Club s Leader of the Month! Each month, a different member should be picked as the leader. If you re the leader, you get to: Pick that month s book Remind everyone when and where the book club will take place Guide that month s book discussion with thoughtful questions and help keep the conversation going! Unravel the Mystery! Okay, so you ve finished a good mystery... now what? Now you can meet and discuss the book! Here are some ways to start the conversation! My favorite scene in the mystery was... If I could be a character from the book, it would be... My favorite clue was... The biggest mystery while reading was... Month/Year Leader Book Title Overall, how good of a mystery did you think the book was? (Remember to record your rating on your I Have Read... sheet on page 11!) What are some questions you would like to ask? To print additional copies of this page, go to! 8 9

Here are some ideas to make your book club meetings even more fun! TITLE DATE READ RATING (MM/DD/YY) Five colored stars are the best 1. Make and bring food and snacks that are based on the current book that your book club is reading. This is your time to be creative! 2. Everyone come dressed up as their favorite character. This is a great time for discussions on why everyone chose their character and costumes. And what a great time for pictures! 3. Have a book swap. Every member brings a few books from home that they ve already read. Create an area where everyone puts their books for swapping. Donate any leftover books to your local library. 4. Plan an activity related to the story you just read. The leader for the month can either plan the book club meeting around this activity or they can plan this as a separate event. For example: Was the story about history or art? Take a trip to a museum! What are some of your ideas? To print additional copies of this page, go to! 10 11

Fill this sheet out every time you read a book you consider a favorite. Pass it along to friends or classmates to get them to read your favorite books! Book Title: Book Author: Date You Finished the Book: / / This book is: Fiction Nonfiction A chapter book A picture book Part of a series Other Book Summary: What was your favorite scene or quote from this book? To print additional copies of this page, go to! 12 13
