Salinger s The Catcher in the Rye is an American classic that explores the mind of one teenager as he confronts failure in school, the death of his brother and the challenges of living in American society. As you read the book, look for the following: characterization, symbols and themes. Be prepared to discuss your insights when classes resume. In addition to reading Salinger s book, you are also asked to read one of the books from the list below. These books deal with similar themes. Annotate the books, or take one page of notes on each book. When classes resume, you will be asked to do a timed essay on the books you read. The timed essay will be paper and ink only (no electronic devices), open notes, open book. The timed essay will be the basis for a 12-to-15-page research paper, which will be completed in steps starting with several periods in the library and culminating with an instructor evaluation.
