If you have any questions over the summer, please Mrs. Cunningham at Assignment #1: Read Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte Read Little Bee by Chris Cleave There will be a check test on both Jane Eyre and Little Bee on the first full day of class. This will count for a substantial part of your grade, so make sure you actually read. Read the books. The physical books. NOT Sparknotes, Shmoop, etc. If you can t read over the summer, maybe you should reconsider being in an honors course... Below, you will find a list of major topics in the novels. For each topic, annotate (take notes on) events, characters, or quotes that fit this theme. Your annotations (notes) MUST BE WRITTEN DIRECTLY IN THE BOOK. If you have to use a library book, your annotations can be on sticky notes inside the book, but please be aware that I can tell if you are using a library book. Notes written in a notebook, on looseleaf paper, or typed will not be accepted. There should be multiple markings in each chapter of your text. Bring your books and be prepared to share these annotations with me on the first day of classes, either Monday 8/27 or Tuesday 8/28, depending on your class schedule and when we meet ( meaning, if you do NOT have your books with you on day 1, you will receive a zero ). Suggested topics to look for in Jane Eyre: Independence/Self-reliance Class and Social Status Passion vs. Judgment Education Appearances The supernatural Mental illness The role and treatment of women Suggested topics to look for in Little Bee : The immigration process and attitudes toward immigrants Racism and xenophobia Responsibility Violence and its consequences Depression and optimism The treatment of women Dealing with (and healing from) trauma What we can do to help one another Survival and coping strategies Loyalty and betrayal PLEASE SEE ADDITIONAL ASSIGNMENT ON PAGE
Assignment #2: Senior Research Paper Book Choose ONE of the following texts and Mrs. Cunningham with your choice by July 1st. You may NOT change your book after this date. Keep in mind, this book will follow you through the most of the year, as it will serve as the basis for your senior research paper. For your upcoming senior research paper, you will be crafting your OWN argument/thesis, which you will eventually be supporting through the use of scholarly secondary sources. Your summer assignment is your first step on that assignment. To do it, read your assigned book carefully. Since you ll be working on the paper until February or March, it would be a good idea to take notes while you re reading! Your options for your senior research paper book are: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte Hamlet by William Shakespeare Frankenstein by Mary Shelley Great Expectations by Charles Dickens Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf A Room with a View by E.M. Forster Never Let Me Go by Kashuo Iziguro On Beauty by Zadie Smith Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson After reading your book, write TWO literary paragraphs of 8-12 sentences each. In each paragraph, explore a different idea that you might want to write your paper about. Begin with a question you have about your book that you would be interested in researching for your paper. YOU are responsible for creating your own question. After each question, respond in the form of a literary paragraph. You should start each with a typical topic sentence that answers the question you have just asked to the best of your ability. Use at least three examples with quotations from your book to answer your question and support your topic sentence. Follow each quote with commentary, and end each paragraph with a concluding sentence that brings the paragraph full circle. Once you have written your two paragraphs, combine them into ONE Word document and upload that single document on Turnitin.com (see instructions below). In addition, bring a paper copy with you to class the first time it meets. 2
Instructions for uploading your assignments to Turnitin.com: 1) Make sure you are logged on to --Use your address as your login name (you should have signed up for Turnitin.com with YOUR SETON ADDRESS only). --Your password should be the same one you use to log on to your . (You may have added a 1 to the end if necessary during registration.) 2) Once you are logged in, click on the link on the left-hand side of the screen that says enroll in a class. 3) When the next screen comes up, enter the class ID and enrollment password: CLASS ID: PASSWORD: britlit then click on Submit. 4) Honors Brit Lit Summer Assignment should now appear as one of the classes in your class list. Click on this link. 5) You should now see the screen that lists the assignment as Summer SRP Paragraphs. Click Submit. 6) After clicking SUBMIT, enter your first and last name and a title for your document. Next, hit BROWSE to locate your document to upload. 7) After hitting BROWSE, you will see the following screen. Find your document and hit OPEN. After your document appears in the BROWSE box, click UPLOAD. Note: You ARE NOT finished uploading your document after you hit UPLOAD. Keep going! 8) After hitting UPLOAD, you will see a box letting you check that you submitted the right document. If so, click SUBMIT. 9) After clicking SUBMIT, a confirmation screen will appear to verify that your document has been successfully uploaded. Do NOT log out until you get the confirmation screen! You should also get an with this confirmation number; however, to be really safe, write down the paper ID number. That way, if the paper and don t show up later, you can prove that you submitted the paper. 3
Annotating Your Summer Reading Book Why are we asking you to do this? Annotating while you read serves a number of purposes. For example: 1. Annotating makes you a more active reader, which means you are more engaged mentally with the text--and less likely to zone out while you re reading! 2. A well annotated text is easy to review, which means it will help you refresh your memory about characters, events, and topics and themes in the text. That means, no matter how long ago you read the text, if you annotated it, you ll be more likely to do better in class discussions and on tests--like the check test you ll have when we get back to school. 3. If you note significant quotes while you re reading, you ll be able to find them more easily later, like when you have to write a paper about the book in the first weeks of school. So, how should you annotate? 1. First, you need a paper copy of the book. No ebooks! You also need a highlighter--or a pen or a pencil is even better. 2. Many students find it helpful to pause at the end of each section of the text (e.g., each chapter or scene) and write a quick summary of what has happened and who has been involved. However, you must also take notes in the margins while you re reading. The points below give you some ideas about that. 3. You might want to circle characters names when they first appear or when you learn new information about them, or to jot down a few words about events when they happen. 4. You can also write down your responses to what the characters say or do. This will help you remember what you were thinking while you were reading. 5. Look for details that are relevant to the key topics in the book. We have listed a number of these topics on page 1 of the assignment sheet for the summer reading, to give you a sense of what you can look for. If you notice other issues developing through the book, feel free to note them, too! 6. Underline or bracket quotes that might be useful in the future, particularly if they re related to the key issues in the book. For example, if your text deals with issues of injustice, and you see a quote that demonstrates that issue, mark it! How will we check your annotations? 1. We are going to collect your books on the first full day of classes when your class meets. That means Mon., Aug. 27 (which is an A day) or Tues., Aug. 28 (a B day). If you do not bring your book to class on that day, you will get a zero for your annotations. 4
2. We will expect you to have multiple notations in each chapter of your book. You don't necessarily have to write something on every page, but as you get better at annotating, you might! Sample annotated page: 5
