Notice that the authors generally use an engaging grabber leading up to the factual information about the book, followed by significant themes illustrated by specific support. We will review the assignment parameters in class, but begin thinking about the high (and low) points of each book that you will succinctly review.

Keep a handwritten page of notes, observations and questions as you progress throughout each novel. You will be expected to write at length about your books in the form of an MLA-format paper (the topics will be given the first week of class) when you return. Your writing will be expected to express an understanding and mastery of the plot, characters, apparent themes and the implementation of literary devices you learned in the ninth and tenth grades. Salinger s The Catcher in the Rye is an American classic that explores the mind of one teenager as he confronts failure in school, the death of his brother and the challenges of living in American society. As you read the book, look for the following: characterization, symbols and themes. Be prepared to discuss your insights when classes resume. In addition to reading Salinger s book, you are also asked to read two of the books on the list below. These books deal with similar themes. The timed essay will be the basis for a 12 to 15-page research paper, which will be completed in steps starting with several periods in the library and culminating with an instructor evaluation.
