1 Name Llanos English H Date Independent Reading Project Semester One Novel Information Sheet Novel Proof of Reading and Presentation due Assignment: This semester, you will need to read a novel by a British author. See the end of this packet for a list. After reading your book, you will create a proof of reading (submitted to turnitin.com AND a hard copy) and a presentation that will be submitted electronically using GoogleApps. It must be submitted on the due date. Presentation dates will then be assigned. Proof of Reading: You will select three quotes from the book. One is the best representation of your favorite character. The second best demonstrates one of the themes. The third is the climax of the novel. Underneath each cited quote, you will write an explanation of how that quote represents those three topics: character, theme, and climax. Presentation Directions: You will create a five-minute presentation on your book to share with the class. Most students select PowerPoint; however, if you have another form of media you d like to use, check with me via . (This must be done least two weeks prior to the presentation date to agree on the guidelines for the different presentation.) Information in Presentation: 1. What is the genre? 2. One slide on the author. (Choose some of the most interesting information to share.) Birthplace? Why a writer? Other books written? Other interesting information? 3. Time period of the book, both when it was written and when it was set. (See your textbook for the historical background.) Mention the eras. Did they influence the content? If not, what did influence the author? If your book setting is more recent, you will need to use another credible source. 4. Short summary. (Think of the back cover or inside dust jacket of books.) 5. Favorite part of the book. Describe the scene or use a quote. You will need to provide a brief explanation of the context and why it s your favorite scene. If your favorite part reveals the end of the book, select a different part. You cannot just say that your favorite part reveals the end and not talk about it. (No cop-outs!) 6. Length of book (page numbers in your copy) / level of difficulty (in your opinion) 7. Potential controversies: When you suggest this book to someone, what would you warn him/her about? OR What would a teacher have to warn students and/or parents? 8. Who would you recommend this book to and why? 9. Works Cited Cite book and where you obtained any other information (pictures, etc.). You should include a minimum of 3 pictures throughout your presentation (not all on one or two slides.) 1
2 Novel selection due to Mrs. Llanos via by Thursday, Nov. 7 (first come, first serve) Final product (proof of reading and PowerPoint) due by Presenting on *Note: This assignment will count toward your third quarter grade! PowerPoint Guidelines: 1. MLA heading on title slide 2. Size 24 font minimum 3. Colors sharply contrast 4. No animation/graphics cover other information on presentation 5. 6 lines x 6 words per slide (maximum) a. Avoid paragraphs b. Use bullet points c. Use succinct phrases instead of sentences 6. Simplicity overrules fancy a. Simple font b. One transition for all slides 7. It supplements your presentation a. Do not read from it b. It does not have everything you want to convey c. Proofread; nothing distracts like spelling errors 8. Minimum of three images with in-text citations 9. Works cited page (does not have to follow 6x6 rule) Presentation Guidelines: 1. Follow the guidelines set forth in the rubric. 2. Have notes with you to use for presenting. The best way to do this is to print out your presentation in handout format with three slides per page. Then, put what you d like to add on the lines next to this. This way, you ll know what the class is seeing and when you need to click to the next slide. 3. Prepare a professional presentation that fully represents your research and effort. 2
