1 June 2017 Dear Parents/Students, In order to encourage life-long reading and prepare for the upcoming school year, we have developed a summer reading program featuring relevant selections that connect to the English curriculum. Our summer reading program provides an opportunity for students to begin the year ready to participate in both class discussion and a written evaluation of the works. This discussion and evaluation will be included in the first quarter English grade. The summer reading program works as follows: Students in each grade level will read an assigned book or books as listed on the MDSA website under the Academics tab: Some reading selections are required of all students in a given class. Additionally, in most classes, students are also required to choose a reading selection from a short list of literary works. Discussion questions can be downloaded from the MDSA website Students will use the discussion questions for each work to guide them in their reading Students do not have to write the answers to the questions, but answering the questions will help prepare them for the written evaluation/test which will be given the first or second week of the quarter Limited class discussion will take place on each assigned book. The written evaluation/test on the book(s) will be included as part of the first quarter grade. In this way, students will have the opportunity to make the connection between their summer reading and other literature covered in their English classes and will also be held accountable for reading the works. Since the summer reading selections will be used during the first few weeks at the beginning of the first quarter, we encourage students to purchase the assigned text(s) so that they are available for the class discussion and evaluation. All of these texts are readily available at Barnes and Noble and online sites such as Amazon. 4 Summer Reading Questions Text: Their Eyes Were Watching God Zora Neale Hurston Consider the following questions while you read the novel and be prepared to discuss them in class. You should be able to refer to specific examples from the novel. Remember to highlight and annotate the novel. You will also be required to either take a quiz and/or write an essay. 1. Explain how Nanny s past influences her dreams for Janie s future. 2. What does the pear tree represent to Janie, and how does the significance of the pear tree relate to the theme of the novel? 3. What is the symbolic significance of Janie s hair throughout the novel? 4. Explain the symbolism of the mule. How does it relate to both racism and women s role in society? 5. Compare and contrast the men in Janie s life, Logan Killicks, Joe Starks, and Tea Cake. 6. What is the significance of the checkers game that Janie and Tea Cake play? 7. What do Joe Starks and Mrs. Turner have in common? How do Janie s values differ from their values? 8. Contrast Janie's experience of working in the field with Tea Cake to her experience of working on Logan s farm? Discuss Janie's attitude towards each of these experiences. 9. Compare and contrast the two settings - Eatonville and the Everglades. Which does Janie prefer and why? 10. Near the end of the novel, Janie says to Phoeby, "Ah done been tuh de horizon and back and now Ah kin set heah in mah house and live by comparisons." Examine this quote. What does Janie mean by "horizon"? What has she learned about life and love? 11. What kind of God are the eyes of Hurston's characters watching? Describe Janie s relationship with God. In particular, what is her attitude towards God at the end of the novel? 4
5 Summer Reading Questions You are required to choose one text from these selections: Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury 1. Describe Mildred and the kind of life she leads. 2. Explain the characterization of Clarisse, examining her motivations and the values she represents. What impact does she have on Montag? 3. Point out the steps that lead to Montag's decision to preserve books rather than burn them. 4. Explain the significance of the titles of the book's three sections. 5. Examine the character of Beatty. Account for both his knowledge of and his hatred of books. Beatty's last words are a quote from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Why does Bradbury give these words to Beatty to say? What is their significance in the story? 6. Discuss the ideas of individuality and conformity in the world of Fahrenheit Discuss the multiple symbolic meanings of fire in the story. 8. What connections does the "Dover Beach" poem have with the life, situation and characters in the story? 9. Near the end, Granger tells Montag "the most important single thing we had to pound into ourselves is that we were not important." What does he mean? How does Granger's statement reflect a major theme? 10. Why did Bradbury create the kind of world he did in Fahrenheit 451? How likely is it that such a world could really come to be? Our Town Thornton Wilder 1. The Stage Manager in Thornton Wilder s Our Town is clearly intended to exist in two worlds, the world of Grover s Corners and the world of the audience. He bridges the gap between the audience and the action of the play. Why do you think the playwright is so careful to keep the audience at arms length instead of trying to create something that seems like real life? 2. Discuss the hymns incorporated into the script of Thornton Wilder s Our Town. Why do you think these particular hymns were chosen? Compare and/or contrast the themes in the play to the ones in the hymns. 3. What is the meaning of human life in Thornton Wilder s Our Town? Is the play optimistic or pessimistic? Pay attention to the comments made in Act III of the play. 4. In Act III, what is Mrs. Sloames attitude towards life? What is Mr. Stimson s attitude towards life? 5. Compare and contrast the Gibbs and Webb families. Which do you consider more important to the message of the play, their similarities or their differences? Why? Support your conclusion with details from the play. 6. Why does Emily s attempt to relive a day of her life on earth make her unhappy? Why would choosing an important day have made things even worse? Relate her experience to the central themes of the play. Would you like to relive a day from your past, knowing what you know now? Why or why not? 5

The only problem here is that the location given happens to be in the Atlantic Ocean. Wilder obviously did this on purpose. Why do you think he may have made this choice? How is the decision connected to the themes of the play? East of Eden John Steinbeck 1. Compare and contrast the Trask and Hamilton families. 2. Explore the connections and allusions to the Book of Genesis. 3. Contrast the characterizations and lives of Cal and Aron. 4. Describe the relationship between Cathy and Adam; what do you think of Cathy s later adventures and life choices? What bearing do they have on the meaning of the story? 5. Explain the significance in the story of the word Timshel. The Secret Life of Bees Sue Monk Kidd 1. How would you describe Lily's feelings about her mother? Did they change throughout the novel? Lily struggles with guilt and forgiveness. Was it harder for Lily to forgive her mother or herself? Explain. 2. What compelled Rosaleen to spit on the white men's shoes? Did she understand the ramifications of spitting on their shoes? Should she have apologized? What aspects of Rosaleen s personality are appealing? 3. What does each of the Boatwright sisters, May, June and August, represent? For example, how would the story be different if there had just been June and August in the pink house and no May involved? How did time spent in the company of the Calendar Sisters and the Daughters of Mary transform Lily? 4. The social situation outside the sanctuary of the pink house is harsh. How do the two worlds conflict? Other white people in the outside community judge Lily s presence in this little black enclave. What do you think of their reactions? Do you think their little community could have survived in that era in the American South, or is it too idealistic a picture? 5. What do the bees mean to the story? What is "the secret life of bees?" Who is the queen bee? How does the bee calendar, along with the changing seasons, influence the characters and their lives? A Medley of Short Stories by Ernest Hemingway Questions on The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber 1. Differentiate between the level and styles of masculinity that Macomber and Wilson exhibit. 2. Describe Margot, especially in terms of her femininity. 3. What is Wilson s attitude towards Americans? Why does he feel this way? 4. Describe how Margot and Francis relate as husband and wife. 5. To what extent is the ending of the story ambiguous? How do you interpret the ending and the meaning of the title? 6

How does Nick go about the process of re-establishing his life? 2. What s the significance of Nick s telling the grasshopper, Go on, hopper. Fly away somewhere. 3. What are the two hearts of the river? How does Nick deal with and feel about each of the hearts? 4. Describe the narrative style of this story. Questions on Indian Camp 1. How do Nick, Uncle George and Nick s father react differently to what happens on the trip? 2. Analyze the themes contained in the next to last paragraph. 3. Explain Nick s feelings in the last paragraph. 7
