1 Dear Seniors, Welcome to English IV! We are looking forward to a productive senior year with you! Besides this letter of directions, there are additional assignment sheets. All English IV students, the summer reading assignment is to choose one of the following three novels: And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde Brave New World by Aldous Huxley And Then There Were None: Summary of the novels: "Ten..." Ten strangers are lured to an isolated island mansion off the Devon coast by a mysterious "U. N. Owen." "Nine..." At dinner a recorded message accuses each of them in turn of having a guilty secret, and by the end of the night one of the guests is dead. "Eight..." Stranded by a violent storm, and haunted by a nursery rhyme counting down one by one... as one by one... they begin to die. "Seven..." Which among them is the killer and will any of them survive? The Picture of Dorian Grey: Wilde forged a devastating portrait of the effects of evil and debauchery on a young aesthete in late-19th-century England. The novel centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world. For over a century, this mesmerizing tale of horror and suspense has enjoyed wide popularity. It ranks as one of Wilde's most important creations and among the classic achievements of its kind.

2 Brave New World: A powerful work of speculative fiction that has enthralled and terrified readers for generations. Brave New World remains absolutely relevant to this day as both a cautionary dystopian tale in the vein of the George Orwell classic 1984, and as thoughtprovoking, thoroughly satisfying entertainment. Assignments: Complete the attached assignments for the specific novel chosen. The completed assignments are due the first day of class. There will also be a quiz over the novel the first week of class. All assignments will be submitted to turnitin.com. Please be sure to complete these assignments because they are a major grade the first nine weeks; we will start the first day turning in the assignments and discussing the novel. Make sure that you follow MLA format and cite your work on a separate page. To cite the quotes, put the author s name and page number in parentheses. There is a link on the Shelton library home page for audio books. Select ESL-BITS. Click on audio books and select And Then There Were None to listen to the text. The Shelton library has the audio for all three novels. You can have one downloaded to a personal computer before school is out. We want you to have a fabulous year and these assignments are clearly a start in that direction. Any questions? Ms. Lee s is clee@shelton.org and Ms. Brooks is rbrooks@shelton.org. See you in August!! Ms. Lee Ms. Brooks

3 And Then There Were None - Assignments 1. Create some type of graphic organizer. Include the characters in the order that they were murdered and the manner of their death. Also include the reason behind their murder. The following should be answered in paragraph form- minimum 8-11 sentences. 2. Choose one of the following characters: Wargrave, Vera, Macarthur, Lombard. In a paragraph, discuss the character s response to the burden of a guilty conscience. You must include a quote to support your analysis. 3. Both the poem Ten Little Indians and the Indian figurines are motifs. Motifs are recurring structures; contrasts or literary devices that can help develop the text s major themes. In a paragraph, explain how these both function as motifs in the novel. Be sure to also explain the effect these motifs have on the characters. 4. How does Agatha Christie break the rules of a traditional detective story? Essay: 5 paragraphs, you should include a minimum of three quotes to support your analysis Discuss whether or not Wargrave s acts were justified. Include in your paper an explanation of how Wargrave s character could be considered a paradox. A paradox is something that is made up of two opposite things that seems impossible but is actually true or possible; someone who does two things that seem to be opposite of each other but is actually possible.

4 The Picture of Dorian Grey- Assignments The following should be answered in paragraph form- a minimum of 8-11 sentences: 1. At what point in the novel, has Dorian gone too far to turn back? Be detailed and specific in your response. 2. The scene in the opium den (Chapter 16) is, along with the earlier scenes at the Vane household an theater, one of the few glimpses into the ugly world of reality that Dorian, Lord Henry and their like, generally try to avoid. Compare this scene (in the opium den) with the previous scenes just mentioned. 3. Dorian has blamed his corruption on all of the following: Lord Henry, the book Lord Henry gave him, Basil, Basil s portrait of him, and his own beauty. Which of these attributions of guilt is most persuasive, in your view? If you believe none, explain why. Support your opinion with a quote. Essay: Choose one and answer in 5 paragraphs; you should include a minimum of three quotes to support your analysis. 1. Is Dorian admirable, detestable, pitiable, or too easily influenced? Choose a position on Dorian s character and be detailed in your answer. 2. Dorian destroyed the souls of several people before he died. Choose one of these characters, Sibyl, Alan or Basil, and show how the relationship with Dorian changed him or her.

5 Brave New World Brave New World summer reading assignment The following should be answered in paragraph form- a minimum of 8-11 sentences: 1. The World State s motto suggests that community, identity, and stability are the most important qualities in their society. What do you believe are the three most important values for a society? Explain your answer. 2. Explain Bokanovsky's Process. Which classes undergo the process and which don t? Use a quote in your paragraph as evidence to help explain how it is one of the major instruments of social stability. 3. Explain the saying History is bunk. Consider the list of things that the Controller dismisses and suggest a reason for his inclusion of these particular examples of bunk. Are there any common themes among them? 4. Summarize both sides of the debate that Mond and John have regarding God. Using a quote from the novel, how does Mond say they were they able to take questions about God out of people s consciousness? Essay: 5 paragraphs, you should include a minimum of three quotes to support your analysis 5. When John is talking with Mustapha Mond about the lengths the government went to ensure stability and happiness, he notes you seem to have paid a fairly high price for your happiness (230). In Brave New World, do the ends justify the means, or have they paid too high a price for happiness, stability, and security? Remember, in formal writing you must never use slang or 1 st or 2 nd person pronouns. Make sure that you avoid, I think or I believe. Quotes, where needed, must be cited in MLA format. Include a Work Cited page as the final page of your essay. Formatting and any citations must follow MLA guidelines. Questions about MLA format can be answered here:
