2 Major Assessments/Units/Topics: Eng 205/Fall Overview: Memoir Essay; Comparative Rhetorical Analysis; Lens Essay (Theory); Research Argument Essay. Unit 1: Memoir as Argument Learning Objective: Respond to different writing tasks according to their unique rhetorical composition demands, and translate that rhetorical assessment into a plan for writing. Major Assessment: Process Essay (3-5 pages) - James Baldwin asserts that good writers must squeeze from their experience the last drop, sweet or bitter, it can possibly give. Your first essay for this course is to write a personal memoir that focuses not simply on what happened during a particular event or experience, but how and why this had a significant impact on your life. Although this is personal narrative, it is fundamentally a critical evaluation with a clear argument. Essays must be formatted according to MLA conventions. Minor Rhetorical Terms and Exam; Rhetorical Precis; Reading Response on On Writing Reading Material: On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King; The Stranger in the Photograph is Me, by Donald Murray; Difficult Girl, by Lena Dunham; How Ramen Got Me Through Adolescence, by Veronique Greenwood Unit 2: Unit 2: Comparative Rhetorical Analysis Learning Objective: Analyze and interpret samples of purposeful writing, identifying and explaining an author s use of rhetorical strategies. Major Assessment: In-Class Essay (Comparative Rhetorical Analysis of Johnson and either Trump, Landrieu, Jobs, or Severn Cullis-Suzuki) - Your task is to develop an argument about how the speakers construct their positions, and if their rhetorical situations converge or differ (and how so). Goals of the Comparative Analysis: 1) Consider the differences between the disciplinary backgrounds of the authors and how those differences affect their arguments. 2) Articulate a clear argument about how the speakers are similar or different. While you may be able to determine a number of connections between the two arguments that you choose, it will be your task to focus your own claim. What is your argument about how these two pieces of writing are similar or different? Why does it matter? 3) Offer concrete evidence from the speeches. When making claims about how these authors argue, offer specific examples as evidence. 4) Explain the purpose of your analysis. For instance, what does your analysis show us? How does it offer us a new way of looking at on one or both of these speeches? How would you answer someone who read your analysis and responded with "So What?" Minor Rhetorical Terms and Exam; Reading Response on one of the speeches; Rhetorical Precis on Johnson Reading Material: Excerpts from Aristotle s Rhetoric; 2 Self-selected contemporary speeches; The Great Society by Lyndon B. Johnson; Immigration speech by Donald

3 Trump OR United Nations speech; Confederate Monument Removal by Mitch Landrieu; Stanford Commencement Address by Steve Jobs; United Nations Speech by Severn Cullis-Suzuki Unit 3: Lens Essay: Learning Objective: Reading complex imaginative literature (fiction, drama, and poetry) appropriate for college-level study and applying a critical theoretical lens Major Assessment: Lens Essay (Process 4-6 pages) - The lens essay uses one text to shed light on another in order to show readers something they would not have been able to see if they had examined the texts in isolation. The lens essay requires you to analyze texts on a theoretical level in addition to the thematic level that is emphasized in close reading essays. Students will write a formal essay in which they analyze and interpret one work through the lens of one of the literary theories presented in class. Critical Approaches/Theories: Formalist Approach Biographical Approach Historicist Approach Marxist Approach Feminist or Gender Approach Psychoanalytical Approach Postcolonialism Poststructuralism/Deconstruction Approach Minor Rhetorical Terms and Exam; Literary Theory Presentation Reading Material: Selected Literary Theory; Maryse Conde s, I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem Unit 4: Civil Liberties in Modern Society: Learning Objective: Create and sustain original arguments synthesized from readings, research, and or personal observation Major Assessment: Research Essay (5-7 pages) - Prompt: Do you think it is justifiable to violate certain civil liberties in the name of national security? You may argue for or against the prompt. You must choose one side; you cannot choose a neutral position. Your thesis statement should clearly state what your focus will be. Sources: You must include at least five sources cited in MLA format both within your paper and in a works cited list at the end. Your sources can be from books, journals, newspapers, or web sites. This draft should be 1,200-1,800 words and it should be an example of your best writing at this point. In addition, it should show proper MLA formatting and source citation. Minor Annotated Bibliography; Reading Response on 1984 Reading Material: Selections from the USA Patriot Act; George Orwell s 1984; self-selected source material for research essay and annotated bibliography
