3 Summer Reading List - Grade 11 Because 11 th grade is focused on a survey of American literature, you will be tasked this summer with reading two books: one assigned to you at your level, and then another of your choice according to the standards listed below. English 11 CP Required Reading: Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen English 11 Accelerated Required Reading: War Dances by Sherman Alexie English 11 Honors Required Reading: You Shall Know Our Velocity! By Dave Eggers English 11 AP Required Reading: Brown Girl in the Ring by Nalo Hopkinson * * * * For your second book, you may choose any book of your choice as long as it fits the following standards. When you return, you will be expected to write at length about both the aboveassigned book as well as the book you chose. Your second book: Must be a work of American fiction (the author must have been born in or have relocated to America); Must prominently feature the voice of an author or character who belongs to an under-represented or marginalized group; Must not be a book you have read in the past, so this must be your first experience with the book; Must be a book you ve invested in don t force your way through a book you don t enjoy! Find a book that fits these criteria, but that also suits your interests, too. There are plenty of fantastic and informative lists online that can give you a start. When you return from summer break, you will engage with these books through classroom discussion and timed writing assignments. Additionally, your first quarter paper of the year will
4 contain some options that allow you to compare your book(s) to the year s first few readings. Best of luck and happy reading! AP 12 English Summer Reading List - Grade 12 This summer you will choose one of the following reading projects and read two books. (Where three books are listed, choose two.) As you read the two books, think of comparisons and contrasts between the books Annotate the books, or take two pages of notes on each book. When classes resume, you will be asked to do a timed essay on the books you read. The timed essay will be paper and ink only (no electronic devices), open notes, open book. The timed essay will be the basis for a 5-7 page research paper, which will be completed in steps starting with several periods in the library and will culminate with an instructor evaluation. The key to success is choosing a theme that appeals to you. Have a wonderful summer, filled with good reading! You will be tested on The Catcher in the Rye. You will be writing about the summer readings.
